Anya Hindmarch’s fresh urban style is making waves in cities everywhere. She is starting to get wider acclaim, and if she keeps delivering chic bags for everyday women, that trend will definitely continue. The “Available” tote is a great example of her quirky, irreverent side.

First, I should tell you that I have a personal rule to not buy canvas totes that cost more that $100. I am going to give this one a little leeway because it has patent leather handles and because I really like its sassy attitude. But right off the bat I am disappointed that it isn’t fully lined. For $230, a bag should be sturdily constructed, if nothing else.

I love the tomato red canvas of the bag combined with the cheerful patent straps. The size is generous enough for a whole day’s worth of shopping, and the flat bottom ensures that the bag can stand up on its own with no awkward slouching.

The best thing about the bag is the hilarious print. On one side it says “Available” and on the other “Unavailable”. Hey, even if the price is high, at least you’ll be getting that pertinent information out there immediately. It’s kind of like having a portable facebook relationship notifier.

J. Crew has teamed up with Manhattan-based leather goods company Wexler & Co. to create this exclusive duffle bag.

This is a gorgeous men’s bag, with an appealing age-worn distressed finish and antique brushed brass finish. These features make the duffle look vintage despite its tender years. The secure zippered interior is lined with moleskin and equipped with a large interior pocket. An adjustable shoulder strap, which extends to a massive 14 inch drop, is another practical perk.

Wexler & Co.’s familiar “Made in USA” tag points to the brand’s homegrown heritage. This is something the brand clearly takes seriously. Its leathers are sourced from Horween Leather Company in Chicago, one of the oldest tanneries in the United States.

This Wexler & Co. duffle will be exclusively released through J. Crew’s Soho Men’s store and Liquor store in New York City on May 31. At $1500 it’s certainly not cheap, but it would make a great investment piece for the future.

Since the 1950s, Emilio Pucci has  made iconic pieces that cutting edge fashionistas the world over love. His print dresses epitomized a generation, but that has never stopped the line from moving forward into the future. This fringed leather bag is the perfect balance of old school style and future-thinking flavor.

I’ll be honest. I’m a little jaded when it comes to handbags because I look at so many of them. But this bag literally made me swoon. The of-the-moment nude color is so perfectly subtle and the bag itself is so well-proportioned that even if it isn’t your style, you can’t help but admire it.

And it’s not my style. I really only wear black. But this nude is so cool and pastel and skin-colored that it seems to fill the same role as black in a fresher, lighter way. The ultra slouchy shape of the bag is also usually not really my thing. I’m messy, and I need structure in my bags. But the design is so perfectly suited to these mounds of fringe that I would totally be willing to accept six months of change and lipgloss jangling around in the bottom.

Let’s talk about the fringe. It’s long, it’s leather, and it’s so rock ‘n roll it hurts. Seriously, it will literally hit your knees. And I know that isn’t really practical in terms of cleanliness, but who cares? This bag is for a classic rock goddess who could care less about such trivialities. She’ll care way more about the fabulousness of the giant gold side clasp, which sadly, you can’t see in the picture.

Unfortunately, at $3,795, I’m not sure how many classic rock goddesses are going to be able to afford it. I certainly can’t. But I might be willing to beat up the next girl I saw carrying it to steal it from her. Just kidding. Maybe.

We are used to seeing funky sixties inspired handbags from affordable designer Eenamaria. The label has taken that theme and turned it on its head by producing a different kind of bag this time round: one for your pencils!

Fashionable school girls and fans of funky graphic patterns will want to pack their drawing equipment in this, guaranteed. It’s huge fun, and quite different from the numerous pencil cases already cluttering up the stationary market. After all, I am not sure there are this many crossovers between fashion and stationary normally!

Of course, whilst the design is great, there are a few questions that have to be raised. Would you pay $25 for something purely for storing your pens and pencils in? That is quite a lot of money, especially when it isn’t leather or particular sophisticated.

For simple versatile handbags, Hobo International is your go to guy.

The Alameda clutch is a chirpy turquoise pouch purse, based around that timeless rectangular shape. There is no over-the-top decoration, and that means you can happily wear this dressed down or dressed up, day or night. The leather too has the same effect; it is glossy enough to look good under the strobe lights, but at the same time subtle enough to work in sunlight as well. For $138, therefore, you are almost getting two bags, and that makes the price more acceptable.

To avoid the purse being too simple, Hobo international has added two zipped exterior pockets. Zips always make things more “edgy,” but I wonder if they are enough to turn this from a simple leather pouch into something more special. Still, at the very least they add some very real function!

I’m rarely a girl who judges a bag by its name, but with a moniker like Maria Candida it’s hard not to. After all, who wants to carry a tote that sounds like a girl with a yeast infection?

It’s a shame really, because this tote offers both style and substance. There’s a certain rustic charm about the finish which combines rich brown and coral leather with woven natural straw. I love the way the vertical leather strips are woven through the angled straw threads; it’s such an interesting take on the woven bag craze. The trapezoidal shape is also stunning.

The design is functional too, with a generous interior and all the features we need to manage it. The base is flat, so you can sit it down for a time without it toppling over or losing its shape. The wide top makes it easy to get your goodies in and out, and the twill lining should go the distance. I’d have preferred more pockets, as a single zippered pocket and lone open pouch doesn’t seem nearly enough for modern girls, but otherwise there’s little to criticize.

Except that name, of course. It’s frankly abhorrent, and I can’t imagine what Serpui Marie was thinking. You probably won’t regret making this tote your go-to day bag, but you might not want to reveal what it’s called!

We’ve all lusted after purses made from crocodile, python, and stingray. But salmon? Industry buzz suggests that fish leather may be the next big thing.

The durability and sustainable nature of fish skins have seen these new exotics adopted by big name brands including Prada, Loewe, Christian Dior, and Puma.

“It’s a good fit for fashion because it’s stronger and more durable than leather, believe it or not, because the fibers cross more than in cow or lamb,” says Gunnsteinn Bjornsson, co-founder of Iceland-based Atlantic Leather.

His company makes five different fish leathers from perch, salmon, wolfish, and cod. The abundance of fish in Iceland led Bjornsson to develop the leathers, but it took many years for the fashion world to consider it. Sports labels Nike and Puma began using the skins in 2005, and now many luxury brands have followed.

“It’s appealing because it’s considered an exotic skin, but it’s not endangered. It’s sustainable and easier to attain,” explained Stivan Kerestegian of ES Sustainable, a salmon skin manufacturer in Chile.

The fish leather industry is in its early stages, but as fashion brands look for more sustainable luxury skins its popularity is sure to rise.

Fish Leather Bags on eBay

In the Checkerboard Satin clutch, Menbur has created a purse that makes me do a double take, and then another. Its contemporary styling is like no other clutch on the market, and it’s priced at just $69!

Those factors alone are enough to make me fall hard for the Checkerboard Clutch. I love the tiny gray and white checkerboard pattern woven into the clutch’s satin body, and the way it unexpectedly works as a backdrop for the modern, angular pleats. The two elements are so different, yet by using mellow monochrome colors Menbur creates a unified and unique look.

This purse’s flaws are ones it shares with so many clutch bags. The elegant frame provides style and structure, but it also compromises storage space. The tiny open interior pouch is pretty useless really, but again it’s par for the course. Chain link straps are also never ideal for comfortable carrying, but it’s always nice to have a hands-free option. And if we’re objective we know it will look a lot better than any heavier satin or leather alternative would. When you’re gussied up in a tight fitting frock and strappy stilettos, what’s one more niggle?

The flaws are so easy to swallow when we look at that price tag. This clutch is original, but not so outlandish that it’ll sit at the back of your closet. At any price that would make it appealing, but at just $69 it’s a steal.
