Gucci has launched its latest limited edition bag to celebrate its partnership with UNICEF, which now enters its sixth year.

The Gucci for UNICEF Sukey bag in gray La Pelle Guccissima will be available for the next 12 months. Its cute moniker was chosen by a Gucci fan who won the right to name the bag at a UNICEF fundraising events last year. This subtle design is a nice change from last year’s novelty snowman bag. The color is classic but not too predictable, and the style is versatile enough to suit day or nighttime wear.

25% of the retail price of the Sukey bag will benefit UNICEF’s Schools for Africa program, an initiative which helps provide basic education for children living in Africa. The scheme has a special focus on Africa’s most vulnerable children, including girls, orphans, and those impacted by AIDS.

“It seemed fitting to dedicate a special edition Sukey bag to our ongoing efforts for UNICEF’s Schools for Africa program since it was christened at our UNICEF fundraising event in 2008,” said creative director Frida Giannini.

The Gucci for UNICEF Sukey bag in gray La Pelle Guccissima  will be available for $1,295 at Gucci stores and online until 28 February, 2011.

With the Olivia, CC Skye really surprises us. At first glance it’s a hobo, with all the slouch we expect but much more style. But that’s just the start of the story.

As a hobo this bag is lovely. The soft leather slouches easily, but its gentle python embossed finish makes the Olivia look more elegant than many of its peers. The shiny golden double zip closure and serpentine braided handle only add to the up-market appeal.

Once we open the hobo up we learn how versatile it really is. Wide leather straps are tucked away, ready to help the Olivia become a tote at a moment’s notice. I wish we could remove the braided handle to make the look much cleaner, but I appreciate the versatility. It’s almost like buying two bags in one!

That’s a real selling point here, as the $595 retail price is hardly chump change. Yet it’s not unreasonable for a designer handbag of this quality, especially when it’s as unique as the Olivia.

Louis Vuitton is the most valuable luxury brand in the world according to a study released by market research company Millward Brown Optimor. The research says the French fashion house has a value of almost $19.8 billion.

Louis Vuitton took the top spot from Hermes, with a value of $8.45 billion, Gucci ($7.58 billion), and Chanel ($5.54 billion).

Millward Brown evaluated each brand’s ability to generate demand. The values reflect the total of future earnings a label should make, discounted to current value.

“The big takeaway is that brands that focused on heritage are the ones that topped the list,” says Lauren Sherman, editor of fashion website Fashionista, a fashion news website. “Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Gucci all focused this year on heritage.“

Just as fascinating as the labels which performed are the big names that didn’t. Burberry did not rank highly, and Prada was knocked off the top ten altogether. While it did quite well with a top five finish, Chanel’s ranking also dropped this year with the French label losing 11% of its value.

“Chanel will always sell perfume and leather goods which are classic products, but compared to Gucci and Louis Vuitton, they are more associated with high fashion,” explained Sherman. “Any brand where the runway is more important than the boutique, suffered a bit.“

The results are definitely a sign of the times. In the face of global recession, we all tightened our belts. Now we’re spending again we prefer to invest in classic pieces rather than trendy It bags. No doubt the It bag will have its day again, but for now fashion is all about timeless design, and these results reflect that.

Diane von Furstenberg makes chic boho pieces that city women covet. She always manages to strike an interesting balance between bold and elegant. This Marlene evening bag is proof of that balance in play.

There’s a lot of detail going on here, and usually I would find such an overwrought approach a little mystifying, but on this bag, it really seems to be working out. The smooth leather bag is overlaid with barkfish paneling, which gives it an earthy flair. Then, there’s the hammered silver hardware. The small dents in the silver up against the larger barkfish scales create a beautiful textural balance.

You might think that adding a studded shoulder strap to this whole multi-layered affair would be too much, but it really comes together well. Perhaps that’s because the black and silver color palette is consistent and cohesive, but also because the textures meld together in a delightful manner.

And at $695, the Marlene is extremely well-priced for a designer evening option. It isn’t exactly cheap, but for materials and craftsmanship of this quality, it’s definitely reasonable.

This Rebecca Minkoff tote offers a great way to integrate animal print into your outfit without being too bright and obvious.

Although generally I am not a fan of leopard print, this royal blue take on the theme has actually made me reevaluate my position. It is a small subtle pattern, and that means it seems much more everyday, with just a hint of the exotic. To keep the exotic to a minimum Minkoff has added a simple traditional gold tag and thin simple handles.

The Cherish tote is, of course, not quite as big as it looks in the picture. That is Rebecca Minkoff’s speciality, after all. She makes beautiful bags that are more compact than their counterparts on the market. I like the size, of course, as all too often totes are far too big.

Although I would have wanted leather for the $155 price tag, the coated canvas is at least functional, and it does make the print stand out brightly!

To pull of the Serpui Marie clutch best in the evenings, you will want to avoid glitz, as it will clash with the pattern. I recommend a feminine approach, keeping to the black and white theme in a floaty and casual way. The black skinny jeans and on-trend clog heels will make sure the outfit is evening appropriate, whilst the soft  blouse and form-fitting corset make it fancy and feminine. It’s sultry, subtle, and undeniably sexy.

Add a little color to your everyday wardrobe with this bold Laguna Top Zip Handbag from Mywalit.

The vivid colors of this Laguna purse make it a real standout. The rich purple leather body is an almost mellow background for the bright stripes of colored suede. Teal, orange, lime green, and pink hues are strange complements to the leather; these are the sort of shades I loved as a high school girl, and my enthusiasm for them hasn’t waned! Of course, they do make the Laguna look a little childish, but if you’ve got a youthful energy I think you could pull it off at any age.

It’d be a shame to dismiss this purse due to its colors though, because Mywalit knows how to make a usable handbag. Its interior is sizable and well appointed, with a large zippered pocket and two open slips to keep things organized. Another zippered pocket on the rear adds even more secure storage space. A long shoulder strap is a bit skinnier than I’d like on a bag of this size, but its luxury Italian leather should help it hold.

You might worry about incorporating such a colorful piece into your wardrobe, but I wouldn’t stress too much. This is a statement piece, and really deserves to take center stage. Pair it with basic black, or a simple jeans and T-shirt combo for a more relaxed look, and wait for the compliments to roll in!

Tod’s has released a brand new bag to celebrate the reopening of its Beverly Hills boutique.

The Script bag was designed for the store by Milena Canonero, the Italian costume designer who’s won Academy Awards for her work on Barry Lyndon, Chariots of Fire, and Marie Antoinette.

Canonero said she wanted to create a bag that was both versatile and user-friendly, the perfect accessory for lugging scripts around a film set! And she seems to have achieved it with this elegant design. It’s available in a range of colors and materials, ranging from practical coated canvas to luxe alligator.

Of course with those different fabrics comes some wildly different prices. You’ll pay $1495 for the Script bag in coated canvas, $1995 for the leather version, and a whopping $26, 000 for alligator!

Mellow World is set to polarize bagistas with its big and bold Monica.

This is definitely a bag for girly girls. It’s available in just two shades: fuchsia pink and passion purple! These hues were bound to get noticed anyway, but just in case they might go undetected Mellow World has used a glossy patent-like synthetic. This material is embossed with a scaly texture; it doesn’t really imitate any reptile I’ve seen, but it does make the finish even more interesting.

Not that it needs more to draw the eye. This bag is massive, and so much bright color on such a large canvas does look a bit overwhelming. There’s also the little matter of the material. We wouldn’t expect genuine leather for $79.95, but I would have appreciated something of more quality. This imitator simply looks tacky, especially in the vivid colors offered.

After all that flash, the subdued and practical interior comes as a bit of a shock. This is a surprising space, from its plain black lining to its functional design. A large zippered pocket in the center divides the space into three separate sections. There are more zippered pockets in the side walls, along with open pouches for your cell phone and sunglasses.

Of course, if you don’t like the look all of those features won’t matter a jot. But if the Monica has caught your eye, this bag will serve you well, if only for a season or two!
