This unusual ebony detailed clutch from little-known designer Ananas brings space-age metallic to the luxury market.

A slouchy metallic bag runs the risk of looking tacky, but I think the materials make this Sabrina clutch appear much more elegant than that. Aside from the ebony feature decorating the lower corner, the main fabric is a luxury goatskin leather. Soft and flexible, this fabric makes the folded shape all the more textural and comfortable to hold.

Although the fabrics are luxurious, I am unconvinced by the frame. Its curve with gathered leather throughout looks a little unrefined, and actually makes the purse appear a little fragile. It does also mean that despite the spacious clutch interior, you don’t have much room to reach inside the purse!

This funky modern bag is $103.50; does that seem a fair price for this goatskin purse?

Sleek minimalism is Jil Sander’s signature aesthetic, so I was a little surprised by the blingy, embellished look of this bag. But despite the exotic nature of the materials, the design of the bag is clean and structured.

The brushed gold frame of the Madame Lizard accents and showcases the exotic multicolored lizard leather with flair. The material of this bag is truly extraordinary. I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like it, nor have I seen lizard skin used in such a unique manner. Because of the black leather peeking through the cutouts in the lizard skin, the surface of the bag looks almost pebbled, and it takes a moment to take in all the extravagant detail.

Jil Sander keeps the details simply-shaped, but in keeping with the posh exoticism of the rest of the bag. The slim shoulder strap is short, and will be comfortable to carry, and I love the stamped metal key-tag. The Madame Lizard also includes an internal detachable black leather purse to keep things organized.

At $2,445 the Madame Lizard is certainly not cheap, but it’s price is well within range of where it should be for such an amazingly crafted handbag.

Spanish label Loewe will boost its push into the American market with an exclusive rerelease of its iconic Amazona bag.

To celebrate the Amazona’s 35th birthday, Bergdorf Goodman’s will sell twenty different models of the handbag. Fabric lined versions will sell for $1800, a little cheaper than the $1950 leather-lined alternative. The prices might seem steep, but when you realize that each one takes 10 to 12 hours to handcraft the cost becomes a little easier to understand.

Loewe’s creative director Stuart Vevers is hopeful that the bag’s timeless appeal will entice American shoppers to embrace the Amazona.

“The silhouette is very classic,” he told guests at a dinner he hosted in Manhattan. “I wanted to go back to the essence of what makes this brand special.“

The styling is part bowler bag, and part briefcase, so I could imagine the Amazona working as well as an office handbag or a weekend satchel. That versatility also helps to justify those high European prices!

Tote bags should be functional and practical for everyday use, but who says they can’t have some feminine flair? Certainly not Jesselli Couture, who brings us this beautiful Buco Embroidered Tote.

The soft synthetic body is embroidered with a delicate Asian inspired design. In this coral version it reminds me of carefree spring days, while in black it’s brooding and sensual for nighttime use. The attention to detail is what really strikes me. The embroidery follows the scalloped top, and swirls out across the back and front.

The high quality synthetic is paired with a leather platform base and two leather shoulder straps. These accents add a little more luxury to the design, although without protective feet on the bottom it might not look so rich for long.

Another disappointment is the open top design. I suppose it makes it simple to reach our cell phone when it rings, but I’d personally prefer security over easy accessibility. A magnetic snap would have helped some without really compromising the tote’s user-friendly design.

I’ve got a couple of concerns, but they aren’t enough to turn me off this beautiful tote. If you’re looking for head-turning design in an everyday bag, this Buco tote might be for you.

Tusk blends all the style of the Orient with a modern design aesthetic to create its Bamboo Slim Tote.

We’ve seen many Asian inspired bags of late, but this is more subtle than most. Rather than sporting delicate cherry blossom prints or silky finishes, this tote channels the East with its center seam detail. You might not even notice if you weren’t told, but these stitches help to recreate the bamboo we’d see in Chinese fields.

I spent so much time looking at these seams, I barely noticed the open pockets situated on either side. That’s a good thing though; too often designers sacrifice good looks for practicality, but Tusk cleverly manages to incorporate these functional features without interrupting the styling.

Those pockets are just the start of the perks. You wouldn’t know it to look at the slender design, but this is actually quite a sizable tote. While it won’t easily hold anything too wide, it’s more than capable of carrying magazines, important documents, and other large items.

The Bamboo Slim Tote is available in just four shades, but they should be enough to satisfy most tastes. Black and blue velvet are conservative choices, while hot pink and this cheery yellow cater for wild childs.

Valentino is one of the most iconic and admired designers of the twentieth century. His level of taste and attention to detail are basically beyond reproach. When he retired, a lot of people felt like the line was never going to be the same. Looking at bags like this, I think they might be right.

I have nothing good to say about this bag. The shape and design of the bag itself are derivative and boring. As a blank canvas, it might have worked out okay if it had been embellished in some extraordinary way. But it wasn’t. Instead they printed a cheesy picture of a rhinoceros and a zebra in repose.

Even the cheesy picture might have been okay if it had been blown up in some way that rendered it less obvious. But, no. This $4,990 handbag just has a terrible print of these two animals on it, embellished with the most tacky sequins and feathers that I can imagine. Poor retired Valentino should sue for character defamation.

While this bag is made of luxurious, buttery soft nude leather and crafted with the highest quality craftsmanship, it still looks like something you might pick up in a zoo gift shop. Five grand to look like the lady that only shops in tourist depots? I don’t think so.

LeSportsac takes its traditional sports bag to an altogether more spring-like level with this floral everyday tote.

The LeSportsac label is functional through and through from the tips of its toes to its head. Although this bag is pretty, therefore, there are lots of touches that make it superbly practical. These touches include the multiple external pockets, and the spacious reinforced base. This bag is also roomy enough for most needs, even though it is officially the “small” version of the Everygirl tote.

This nylon purse is lightweight and functional, and although the shape and design aren’t particularly inspiring, they are useful. I can see this being used for trips to the gym rather than fashionable occasions, however!

With a reasonable price and long list of positive features, this LeSportsac floral tote should bring some spring cheer to your gym trips!

OK, I hold my hands up; I do, without fail, love handbags with bows on. This means I have fallen a little bit in love with the Aldo Fogerson before I have even had a chance to evaluate the pros and cons!

Still, I am nothing if not impartial. As such, I will take a step back from this metallic clutch and try hard to do some formal evaluating.

Let’s start with the price. Well, no complaints here. This bag is only $30 when full price, and even cheaper when on sale. That is about as bargainous as it comes, so should keep even the tightest fashionistas happy. Next, the materials. They are, as expected for the price, all synthetic. However, despite the fact that leather is always nicer, the metallic sheen is quite sophisticated, and not overly glossy. The area I do have issues with is the carry options. Despite the bag being a good and functional size, you don’t get an optional shoulder-strap, so the wrist loop will have to do.  The bag is unlikely to be heavy though, to be fair.

There we are; I was calm and cool and calculated. In the end, however, the stylized bow on the front will win me over time and time again. With the gentle metallic and convenient shape, I am seriously considering buying this for my next night out!

Coccinelle offers an antidote to all those glitzy clutch purses with the Daphne.

You won’t find a hint of sparkle here; instead Coccinelle gives us a much cleaner look with a soft pleated body and casually tied bow at the side. The high quality leather helps each pleat fall gently to create a look which is feminine, yet contemporary. The shiny silver side buckle is the only hint of hardware. I love the restraint Coccinelle has shown here; in a world of over-studded, over-jeweled purses, this more minimalist look really stands out.

Its dimensions are more generous than many of those other clutches too. You should have no problem fitting everything you need inside the stripey interior space. It comes with a practical zippered pocket, and a zip closure to keep all your evening essentials safely inside.

My only complaint is that without a shoulder strap, Coccinelle forces us to carry the Daphne by hand all night. The soft leather will feel great in your palm, but this purse is really a shade too big for old-style clutching. That makes the Daphne more appropriate for a night at the theater, where you can sit it down, than a cocktail party or club.
