I probably don’t need to reiterate how much I love Marc Jacobs. His version of American fashion is iconic. But this season’s accessories have been a little so-so as far as I’m concerned. The 2010 Rockstar clutch is a pretty good example of how the line is frustrating me.

Firstly, naming the bag Rockstar creates some pretty high expectations. When I hear the word “rockstar” I think black leather, gold lame, and maybe chains. But certainly not houndstooth. Houndstooth is for couches. Maybe not gold houndstooth, but still; it’s a little conservative to be rock-n-roll, no matter how you spin it.

Secondly, the bag is pretty boring. The shape is classic and ladylike, but that’s not really what I want out of my “rockstar” bag, do you? I feel like Marc Jacobs is just trying to use up the last of the houndstooth fabric from a couple of seasons ago. And for $850, I at least want something new.

Santi doesn’t half make good slouchy pouch bags. The label seems to get the balance of flowing fabric and shape perfectly weighted.

This delicately studded bag is no exception to the rule. It is just so … pretty. Whilst many studded purses tend to be edgy and rocky, this one uses tiny lentil sized studs that look more like sequins. This gives you the metallic vibe without adding too much attitude. Essentially, this means you can wear this to an elegant evening do, and not just a gig.

The shape of this purse isn’t new to the Santi brand. In fact, it rehashes this old favorite all the time. It is a good job, therefore, that it is a shape that works both looks-wise and in terms of having enough space for all your belongings. Plus, that traditional clasp is ultra feminine, and much more convenient when you consider that it conceals a little chain handle.

With good looks and a surprisingly summery vibe, this is a great accompaniment to all those summer weddings, although it will cost you a relatively expensive $188.

Joe’s Jeans delivers casual style for girls on the go with this Jude cross-body bag.

The Jude has the kind of cool, relaxed style that Joe’s Jeans is famous for. The label knows its fans, and this military style purse that shuns feminine features for everyday style is just what they love. But the color palette leaves me a bit cold. This dusty rose shade is more gray than pink, so it’s a shame the only other color is a lighter gray. I wish Joe’s Jeans had offered a few more diverse tones they might have better captured our imagination.

The colors may be a little uninspired, but there’s still a lot to love here. Not least of which is the lambskin body, buttery soft and much more luxurious than the price tag would have you believe. At $150 it’s no more than I’d expect to pay for a run-of-the-mill cowhide, or even a high-quality synthetic!

And the design is impossible to fault. The interior is well appointed, with zip and slip pockets inside and an extra slide pouch hidden underneath the flap. The cross-body strap is adjustable so you can find the perfect fit for maximum comfort.

Be warned though; despite being categorized as a mini this isn’t what I would call a small bag. I suppose the term is relative, but most of us should find space inside for more than the essentials. That won’t be a problem for most girls, but if you’re looking for a bag that’s as light as a feather when full this just won’t do.

JJ Winters delivers a clutch with edge in this Rhino bag.

While many designers are adding attitude through studs and grommets, JJ Winters prefers zips. That’s nothing new; we saw the designer play with the hardware on the suede multi-zip bag. But while the zips appeared awkward there, here it all comes together. That makes the Rhino more than just flavor of the month; I imagine it’ll look just as fresh next year, and the one after that.

It’s a good thing too, because this Rhino clutch definitely isn’t cheap. I hesitate to spend more than $100 on these tiny purses, so the $305 retail value well and truly exceeds my dream budget. And for that we don’t even get a shoulder strap! But perhaps I shouldn’t dismiss it so hastily. After all, it’s made from real leather in a lovely silver hue; the shade pops, but it’s not as glitzy as so many metallics are.

This is the kind of clutch I can imagine rocking at any time of the day; it’ll add edge to a little black dress or vamp up a casual T-shirt and jeans. It’s big enough to suit that all-day application as well, even though the lack of strap could see it become unmanageable when loaded up.

This Rhino Clutch definitely has staying power, if your budget can handle it.

There are handbags that are functional, and then there are handbags that are art. This Rafe clutch definitely falls in the category of art and sculpture!

I hate to say it, but you can see why this purse costs a mighty $495. OK, so that is a lot of money, but this is truly unique. I have never seen a bag like it, and the combination of natural asymmetrical shapes and modern cubist styling makes it a real stunner. This is a good thing, as spending a hefty chunk of cash on a bag should result in something eye-catching and beautiful, something that starts a myriad of conversations!

As for the practical issues, well, there are a few. After all, the hard abalone shell exterior with all its lumps and bumps doesn’t offer much flexibility. I think what it loses in room it makes up in looks though!

Stylish, modern and utterly gorgeous, this expensive Rafe bag has just pushed out the boundaries of handbag design everywhere!

Jessica McClintock offers restrained elegance, and just a hint of bling, with this gorgeous flap clutch.

This purse is a curious mix, and one that I think really works. Most clutches so simply designed do away with frills and frippery altogether, but that’s not the case here. It’s feminine, but subtly so with the satiny body complemented by a faceted stone surrounded with tiny rhinestones. It’s a regal look that wouldn’t appear out of place at any high class soiree.

The frame design does limit how much we can pack inside this clutch, but the soft satiny body helps to work against that. You should be able to carry the real evening essentials, and squeeze in an extra tube of gloss. I wish the chain was removable, as the interior shouldn’t be cluttered with straps, but it will come in handy as the evening wears on.

This Jessica McClintock purse doesn’t feature authentic diamonds and gemstones, but for just $40 I think it does a pretty passable imitation. And when you spend less on your purse, you’ll be able to splurge on that killer gown!

British retail giant Selfridges has teamed up with UK charity Bottletop to offer eco-friendly handbags that give back.
As their name suggests, Bottletop bags are crafted from recycled bottle-tops rescued from waste and crocheted together by communities in need.

The brand’s creator Cameron Saul should know a thing or two about handbags, as his father Roger Saul founded Mulberry. In fact, Roger and the Mulberry design house helped the first Bottletop bags become best sellers.

“I wanted Bottletop to be a cool brand. We’d sell sexy, high-quality products with a feel good factor, not things people brought because they felt they had to,” said Saul.

The limited edition Selfridges collection features five styles: the Luciana and Comprido clutches, the Paris and Bellani shoulder bags, and the Claudio luggage bag.

Money from the brand’s sales helps to support local programs in third-world countries and empower young people by providing education and jobs. This is one of the first green labels championed by Selfridges, and hopefully it won’t be the last.
