Gucci is making good on its pledge to reduce paper use with the introduction of all new eco-friendly packaging and practices.

The new packaging is made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified paper which is fully recyclable. The FSC certification guarantees the paper is not sourced from natural forests or habitats. Its trees are also not genetically modified, or grown with the use of harmful pesticides.

Gucci has also done away with the plastic laminate used on its bags, boxes, and tissue paper. Gucci is also switching from polyester to natural cotton for its ribbons and garment bags.

Even Gucci mannequins will get eco-friendly makeovers. They’ll now be made from shockproof polystyrene, a durable and fully recycled raw material, and finished with water-based paints.

Gucci’s new green philosophy will extend to every store. The brand hopes to significantly reduce its plastic waste, paper consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions by the end of the year.

Now if only we could convince Gucci to give up the crocodile skins and furs, the brand might become a favorite of all the environmental activists out there! While it’s not there yet, I appreciate these baby steps.

It looks authentically vintage, but I don’t think the flower power children were dying genuine leather back in the day! The interior is generously sized, but it has its flaws. The stacked open pouches are too skinny to be really practical, although if you have a slim cell phone you might get some use from them.

While summer weather has well and truly set in, trend forecasters are already casting their gazes to fall. If you want to stay ahead of the game, here’s what you should look for in your next season accessory.

The runways are full of exotic skins, so if you have several thousand to drop on a bag something in alligator, crocodile, or python will serve you will. Animal printed calfskin accessories look almost as dramatic, at dramatically less cost.

With prints and accents enjoying their time in the sun, the other details have been pared back. Look for classic rectangular totes, square shoulder bags, and simple flap purses in classic blacks, browns, grays, and nudes. Red is the exception to the rule, the most vibrant shade in fall’s daytime palette. Carry an all-red purse with confidence, or play it safer with a neutral accessory sporting red tassels or accents.

For more daring choices, look to bags that work on a smaller scale. In the evening we can let our hair down with clutches and baguettes studded with sequins, rivets, and rhinestones. If a purse looks like it’s had a run-in with a Bedazzler, it’ll probably work for your fall parties.

Trend forecasters are as quick to tell us what’s out as they are to spread the word about what’s in. This season lose the studs, spikes, and neon. We’re also ditching oversized hobos, particularly if they’re covered in fringe or clunky hardware.

If you’re on a budget, these tips can serve you well. Note that classic handbag shapes in traditional shades like black, brown, or gray never go out of fashion no matter what the season.

The ordinarily staid Liz Claiborne walks on the wild side with this Electric Slide tote.

While it may have little to do with disco dance moves, there’s something electrifying about this tote. Perhaps I’m just impressed because it is so different to Liz Claiborne’s usual fare, but I love this sexy scaled print. Liz Claiborne calls it a croc, although it seems more serpentine to me. Whatever beast it is, the mottled scale prints look gorgeous against the peacock blue skin.

That skin is synthetic, which isn’t a great surprise when we’re paying less than $100. It’s very soft though, so we don’t feel like we’re making too much of a compromise. As a bit of a bonus this manmade material is also resistant to splashes and stains.

The beautiful printed body gives way to a more traditional Liz Claiborne look inside. The tan lining is drab, but considering the wild print outside that’s not too disappointing. The space is functional, if not overly inspired, with synthetic trimmed pockets and pouches to help you stay organized.

The Electric Slide tote may be a little too daring for Liz Claiborne’s faithful fans, but I predict it might make those who’d previously dismissed the designer as dull take notice.

Linea Pelle reminds us that the most effective clutch purses aren’t always the ones that scream the loudest with the Angie.

Just like Miss Jolie, the Angie is a bag which relies on its natural beauty to impress. Two large antique brass buttons are the only accents needed here. The washed lambskin has an intriguing texture, and it’s soft enough to create its own pleats with little designer interference.

You might believe the design is too basic, but Linea Pelle has thought things through. With its soft unadorned leather, the Angie becomes the kind of purse we actually want in our hands. That’s a good thing too, as there is no optional strap.

The interior is just as simple, although its dimensions afford us a little more storage space than the average. Resist the urge to load it up too much though, as without a shoulder strap to lean on it could easily become unmanageable as the night wears on.

Whether such a simple purse is worth the rather recommended retail price of $250 is up to you. Although if you prefer your purses pared down, the Angie could be worth a splurge.

Revered Italian actress Isabella Rossellini is working with the Bulgari design team on a handbag bearing her name.

“My connection with Bulgari dates back to when I was a child and I’d accompany my mother [the legendary Ingrid Bergman] to the historic shop in Via Condotti in Rome,” Rossellini explained. “She loved Bulgari jewels.“

Her Rossellini handbag understandably takes its cues from the golden years of Italian fashion, with a design that has been described as “clean-cut and essential.” It features hand-crafted enamel clasps encrusted with semiprecious stones and a snail print lining, a playful homage to Rossellini’s recent ecological awareness films. The Rossellini bag will be available in four colors and materials representative of Rossellini’s personality.

The Rossellini bag will be unveiled on July 7 during haute couture week at Bulgari’s Rome flagship store. If you can’t get to Italy you won’t have to wait too long to feast your eyes on it, as it will hit Bulgari stores around the world at the end of July.

Lauren Merkin clutches are always modern, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one with such edge!

This Diana purse is dotted with tiny round and pyramid studs, which are paradoxically both on trend and a little bit dangerous. Yet the purse doesn’t lose its femininity thanks to its baby soft lambskin body. This totally touchable skin gives the pleated body plenty of volume, and a gentleness that is very endearing. It’s also just the sort of clutch I’d want to carry in my hand!

We’re not restricted to hand-held toting though, as the Diana comes with a long metal strap for cross-body and over-the-shoulder wear. It’s not the most comfortable strap in the world, but the chain is a great complement to the silvery studs.

The Diana might be petite, but she shouldn’t be underestimated. The interior is simply designed, but the soft lambskin body is made for overstuffing. If you go overboard the magnetic snap will pop, but don’t let that deter you from squeezing a few more items inside than you normally would.

This studded Diana is available in four color combinations, but for me the black with silver studs is a clear winner. With gold accents it just looks a little cheap, and sadly in beige and yellow it loses its edge. Of course, that will suit anyone who doesn’t have the confidence to embrace their inner rock chick!

Ooh, I am so glad that Valentino have decided to release this sultry and on-trend version of their beautiful Nuage bag. It is just, for lack of any better words, beautiful!

I prefer this new soft crinkled leather to the previous shiny version of this bag. It works perfectly with all the coral and peach shades that are on this season’s catwalks, and with the chiffon and the silks. Even better, it is surprisingly versatile, as I could see the simple earthy shade coordinating brilliantly with the military khakis and colors that are just coming into fashion.

Of course, it goes without saying that the quality is heavenly. You are, after all, paying $1795 for it, and that means you expect beautiful workmanship. Thankfully this hobo delivers, from the floppy bow to the buttery soft leather. This will be comfortable at the same time as stylish, which is becoming all too rare a combination.

Sexy and typically Valentino, this is one bag I wish I could afford.
