Over-studding seems to be an ever more popular trend at the moment, and this Lionel Sorento studded hobo is perhaps one of the most hardware heavy I have seen.

That hardware, in a geometric pattern of diamond shaped studding, is actually pretty cool. It gives the tote a good feel, as well as looking very dramatic as you carry it around town. However, if you aren’t a fan of heavy metal (or if you have any metal detectors to go through!) then this probably won’t be your ideal purse.

For $150, there are some niggles. First and foremost, I am disappointed that the great classic shape and silver hardware aren’t supported by a quality leather body. Nothing looks better against metal than a soft matte black leather, and I am afraid that for me the manmade alternative just doesn’t cut the mustard. At least, however, the synthetic material makes the purse more lightweight, and consequently easier to carry for long periods of time.

It certainly looks great, but is this Lionel Sorento shoulder bag too much bling and not enough brains?

One of the most appealing things about summer for me is that we can get away with more affordable handbags. While leather and furs are par for the course in winter, summer calls for woven straw and soft terry cloth. This Moody Blues bag from surf label O’Neill is a great example of the budget accessories we can enjoy now warmer weather is here.

Terry cloth isn’t very luxurious, but it’s ideal for summer beach bags. The material will sop up any excess moisture from your beach towel and bathers, making it ideal for trips to the seashore or pool. Don’t think this is only a beach bag though. Its nautical blue and white stripes could also bring a little maritime flair to a trip to the markets or a summer barbeque. The bold chevron stripes are complemented by a blue acid-wash shoulder strap.

This generously sized bag doesn’t have too many features, as it’s really meant for bulky items like towels and flip flops. The zippered interior pocket is a blessing though, as it will keep your technology separate and safe from wet items when you’re heading home from the coast.

This is a seasonal item which probably won’t suit you once fall rolls around, but at $39.50 it won’t break the bank either. For that price you won’t mind having it sit in the closet until warmer weather rolls around again.

Nine West combines modern style with everyday practicality with this Avari Tote.

It might not be a trendsetter, but there’s a lovely modern look about this large tote bag. The flared top and pleated base make a nice change of pace from the traditional boxy tote bag shape. Deep chestnut brown trim and handles are a gorgeous complement to the Avari’s bold color palette. The girly girl in me is drawn to this ultra pink purse, but there are also less feminine options including sun yellow and mellow Sahara tan. If you prefer a unified look you can’t beat classic black on black.

I like the look, but the practical design is what’s really won me over. The dimensions are generous but it never feels overwhelming, with its large zippered pocket and pair of technology pouches. These compartments work in tandem with the external zip pocket, which gives us a handy space for storing the essentials we need at our fingertips.

But the Avari’s charm is about more than its organizational features. I also love the straps, which allow us to easily convert the Avari from regular tote to cross-body bag. Simple fold in the top, zip it up, and add the longer strap to create a whole new look.

Nine West doesn’t give us the luxury of leather, but this synthetic bag has enough style and substance to make it worth its $99 price tag.

Nahui Ollin looks to get us work ready with this Briefcase tote.

This is the Nahui Ollin we love on a larger scale. This time around, she’s weaving recycled magazines to create a playful laminated surface. The papery finish is accented with leather buckles and a short handle.

It might seem like this strap is too short for such a large bag, but you can always attach the longer one. You probably won’t need it though, as this isn’t a purse which should be loaded up. The buckles are a bit flimsy, and prone to popping open if there’s anything much inside. If you only need files and light folders that won’t be a problem, but if you need to carry a laptop or books to the office you’ll need a hardier briefcase.

Personally I think that makes the $250 price tag seem steep. For that money I want something that does more than make a style statement. This briefcase tote has a unique look, but sadly it doesn’t deliver what most of us want in a work bag.

There’s nothing more iconic than Burberry’s signature check. Which is why a lot of people are surprised when they see Burberry items without it. But, in reality, a lot of the line’s less signature looks are among its most sophisticated.

At $1,095, this is on the low end of designer hobo bags, so if you’re in the market, this is a beautiful bag at a (designer) reasonable price.

The last time I was in New York, the line outside the Marc by Marc Jacobs store in the West Village was down the block. It’s really no wonder, because the line is always on fashion’s cutting edge. This Franny tote totally fits the urban hipster bill.

Animal print has been everywhere these past few seasons. Sometimes it’s a little too loud to be versatile, but not this time. The black and white color palette ensures that this tote will go with almost everything, especially this summer’s ultra-brights.

The sleek PVC material is sensible and durable. It’s both water-resistant and easy to clean, so you could use it for a day at the beach and then pair it later that day with an LBD with no fuss.

The multiplicity of straps also contributes to the usability of the Franny tote. You can carry it in the crook of your arm like a purse, or sling it over your shoulder. The longer strap is really crucial here because the tote’s generous size will encourage you to fill it to capacity.

Basically, the only thing I don’t like about the Franny tote is the price. It’s durable and attractive and super-versatile, but it’s also $330, and that price is just a little high for a non-leather tote.

This is a purse that feels as luxurious as its price tag suggests. Many of us may balk at spending more than a thousand dollars on such a simply designed tote, but I’d still love this glitzy bag on my arm!
