The new line of Cherry bags by See by Chloe have been chic and fun. I liked the Cherry tote, but I like this new Cherry Mini even better. It may be small, but it packs a wallop in terms of style.

I have recently become a little exhausted by the prevalence of metallic leather bags, but the pebbled leather and muted shine on the Cherry Mini are really appealing. It’s not overly showy, but the softly textured silver leather is definitely going to attract attention.

The shape is really interesting and new. It’s almost a mini saddle bag with a drawstring and flap. The reinforced seams and edges make it more durable and also add an attractive design feature.

The front zipper pockets are what really pull me in, though. The shiny gold hardware is a delightful contrast to the subtle metallic leather, and the pockets themselves will come in hand for keys and other small objects that you need access to quickly and easily.

The drawstring is decorated with an oversized leather tassel that balances out the more subtle elements of the Cherry Mini. Plus, the combination of drawstring and flap front closures makes the Mini really secure.

The $335 price tag is going to make this bag a hit amongst the young, hip demographic that it seems directed at. It’s a great price on a great looking bag that can go from day to night with absolute ease.

Weekend bags have a tendency to be a little boring and formal, so it is a nice change to see one that is metallic and bright.

Swoop has done its utmost to give this a funky vibe. The woven texture would be a nice enough addition, but to have it in a goldy metallic shade is even nicer. I am sure it would be better in leather, of course, but for $40 you really wouldn’t expect that sort of luxury!

The design has been done by  Swoop before, with that strange curved shape that offers lots of space. We know, however, that this sort of design works in practice, so why reinvent the wheel?

It is cheap, pretty and does what it says on the tin, so what more could you need?

Self confessed “granola hippie types” Ashley Cellura and Eliza Sullivan have turned their passion for living green into a thriving handbag business. Their EvenOdd Creative accessories are hand-crafted from reclaimed vinyl billboards, bike inner tubes, and seatbelts found in their neighborhood.

Their materials are often donated by local businesses keen to offload their waste.

“We go to car dealerships, festivals, and everyone is starting to help us,” explained Ms. Cellura. “They say they just throw the stuff away, and it’s awesome if we take it. It’s just hard work getting out there and letting people know we can reuse them.“

EvenOdd Creative’s range features messengers and grocery bags affordably priced between $20 and $60. In future we can look forward to the brand releasing more formal clutch purses and accessories incorporating the designers’ own artworks.

Handbags made from natural fibers look the part for summer, but I always wonder how long these woven bags will last. Straw and raffia are notoriously brittle, but I think I’ve found a material which will survive a few seasons. Artisans around Indonesia work with ate grass, a local grass which is thought to last 100 years.

The ate grass is woven together to create accessories which last much longer than their western counterparts. The result is a summery-styled bag which you can actually use to carry everything you need without the fear of it breaking.

There are many interesting accessory artisans working with this hardy grass. Balinese designer Ketut Wida Haryati handcrafts ate grass purses which are colored without the use of paints or harmful chemicals. Her bags are available from Eco-Handbags and Novica.

Nengah Danantara learnt the art of ate grass weaving from his mother, a senior ate weaver in his Balinese village. Today he takes the traditional methods and uses them to create eye-catching purses with contemporary shapes and accents, like this Batik Moon bag. See by Chloe is one of my favorite diffusion lines. It always has a chic, quirky take on what’s going on in fashion, but its pieces never look dated or trendy. The Marti shoulder bag is a great example of the label’s hip aesthetic.

I should admit right up front that I adore this bag. It has a sweet 70s vibe that is fresh and vibrant. The soft blue leather is a fabulous alternative to black for summer, and will go perfectly with all those nautical trends that we’ve been seeing on the streets.

The gently scalloped shape of the bag is both attractive and ergonomic. Worn across the body, it will fit right into your hip with no hard edges. The long, thick strap is made for comfort, but it also adds to the retro appeal. Plus, it’s adjustable, so you can customize the way it hugs your curves.

I’ve never been a fan of zipper-edged bows, but the sculptural version on the Marti is making me change my mind a little. They are a great addition to the flap front of the bag. The inset suede detail on the front of the bag mimics its shape and adds another layer of texture.

At $455, the Marti is a reasonably-priced designer bag, but for recessionistas like me, it’s still a little out of reach. I’ll be keeping my eye out for those summer sales.

It is rare that you see a minaudiere that isn’t metallic, or shiny, or made out of some obscure hard substance. To see one made out of straw is even rarer.

Yet that is exactly what this Serpui Marie clutch is made of: straw. A delicate miniature weave of this glossy hot pink straw, which somehow manages to transform a very down to earth substance into something undeniably fancy. That means that despite me gearing myself up to be uncertain of this box clutch, I am actually quite impressed, and think that it looks luxurious!

For $145 it had better be luxurious, as that is a lot of money for a straw purse. However, the gorgeous pebble shape and cute spherical clasp makes up for any pricey qualities, although many people will feel a lack of expensive materials means no amount of design can justify an expensive price tag.

Jimmy Choo’s accessories collection is one of my favorite of the year. It has an edgy, urban sensibility that still manages to stay classic. The Zulu clutch is a fabulous addition to the line’s offering.

Black leather, studs, and fringe don’t automatically make you think “elegant”. They make me think “motorcycle”, actually. And while the Zulu definitely has a moto-chic inspired look, it’s still elegant.

The multiple layers of leather fringing give the bag an interesting shape and volume. The fringe manages to stay on the safer side of sleek because it is short and has wide cuts, unlike the long stringy more bohemian versions. The studding is subtle. It gives the Zulu a little rocker-y sparkle, but since the studs are flat, it doesn’t come off as obvious.

The overall effect is downtown, but versatile. The Zulu would be apropos for a night of clubbing, but it could also just add a little glimmer to an understated LBD. For $975, the Zulu is a great piece, but definitely one that is a significant investment for an evening bag.
