One of my favorite things about designer Alexander Wang is that he doesn’t flood the market with a bunch of different bags. He makes only a few bags each season, each of which inevitably becomes a cult classic. Wang makes bags that are classic, minimal, practical, and a little edgy. The Darcy is another great addition to an accessories collection that women worldwide clamor for.

The shape of this bag is just unusual enough to be noticeable. Wang has narrowed the opening of a traditional tote so that it has more of a funnel shape. The open top with magnetic closure is easy to get in and out of, and is perfect for women who want constant, easy access to their phone or PDA.

The texture of the black leather is also just a little bit unusual. I wouldn’t call it pebbled or weathered or embossed, but it seems to be some combination of these things. Whatever it is, it looks cooly reptilian. The gold studs on the base add a little touch of subtle sparkle and protect the Darcy from wear and tear.

At $850, the Darcy is a steal in the designer handbag kingdom. Its versatility and cool factor will surely make it a fall favorite of downtown types.

The Chloe collection always finds a way to surprise me. Its use of unusual colors, textures, and shapes makes the designs stand out. This Ethel tote is no exception to that rule. Its fabulously innovative design makes it a beacon in a sea of boring handbags.

The dark pink leather has a great weathered appearance that makes it casually chic, and the color is some perfect midpoint between baby pink and cordovan. The shape of the bag is sleek and simple, but with a few extra touches that make it interesting. The pleating at the front of the bag, for example, adds more texture to the Ethel’s appearance, and the contrasting tan leather patches on the handles add a bit more color and depth.

You will have no problem finding room for life’s necessities in the roomy Ethel. It’s even large enough to tote a small laptop or netbook, and with its tailored good looks it will be a stylish addition to your work wardrobe. The removable shoulder strap is a convenient option, but it is scarcely wide enough to be comfortable.

At $1,350, the Ethel is less expensive and more stylish that many of its competitors. It is a very pretty, very chic tote at a decent price for a designer handbag that is bound to become one of this season’s It bags.

What a cute purse this Modernist wallet from Sonia Rykiel is. The accessory from the designer’s more affordable Sonia by Sonia Rykiel label has the stuff to make me swoon.

I love the unexpected combination of black, red, and pink horizontal leather stripes. They really make this simply shaped purse something special. The oversized silver zipper pull reminds me a bit of the pop-top from a can of soda, but funnily enough this only adds to the purse’s charm. It might just be me, but not even this quirky embellishment can temper my emotions.

But then I open up the wallet, and I’m frankly disappointed. By calling the Modernist a wallet, Sonia Rykiel really raised my expectations. I expected credit card slots and zippered pockets for change, but instead there is nothing. Nothing might be harsh; I suppose there is the fabric lining. But when it comes to helping me organize my cash and cards, Sonia Rykiel gives me nothing. And for nearly $100, we frankly deserve better.

There’s a lot to love here, but there’s also a lot that falls short. If you’re all about the looks you won’t mind one bit, but if you buy a wallet with functionality in mind you may want to look elsewhere.

With its cute dome shape and lush goat grain finish, this Eliza bag from London Fog is quite the head-turner.

The Eliza isn’t made from real leather mind you, but the finish does a good enough impersonation that I barely mind. Having said that though, close to $115 seems a bit rich for a mere leather mimic, no matter how convincing.

But on to those looks, the ones that captivated me so much in the first place. The tall domed silhouette looks fresh in a sea of tired old boxy totes. I like the way the bag plays up its curves, with zippered pockets in the corners near the base, and curved pouches near the top. I’m not sure how practical any of these tiny spaces will be, but at least we get a more usable zippered pocket on the back.

And of course, there are plenty more inside. It’s a good thing too, because the Eliza is no delicate flower. Such a big bag needs every one of the zip and slip pockets provided to keep our essentials in order.

London Fog makes a few missteps with the Eliza, but its great looks and practical style is enough to impress.

The shoppers are modeled on plastic bags, but crafted with a unique nylon fabric known as parachute silk. The fabric looks a bit flimsy, but after trialing it for two years Hay claims her Ecosilk bags can comfortably hold 14 kg of groceries. They also fold up to next to nothing, so you can easily stash them in your handbag, pocket, or the glove compartment of your car ready for your next spending spree.

The standard Ecosilk bag retails for $6.95, while its more stylish rosette adorned sister costs $9. The label also sells fruit and veggie bags, drawstring bags, and versatile everyday alpha bags.

There are more pockets on the sides too, which are kept closed shut with zips.

The Universal’s looks aren’t revolutionary, but there’s a certain charm to its casual slouchy silhouette. The luxury leather really pops in this teal shade, but if you’re worried about its versatility consider the Universal in black or the almost burgundy shade of purple.

At $225 this is one of Dan W’s most expensive purses, but its high quality material and practical design make it worth the splurge.
