I’m not sure whether Jesselli Couture was inspired by Shannen Doherty’s Beverly Hills 90210 bad girl, but there’s definitely a bit of Brenda Walsh in this Brenda Satchel from Jesselli Couture.

This is one edgy satchel, from its crocodile embossed black leather to its extra-long zipper pulls. It’s a cool customer, and it knows it. Studs are still on trend, but the unique smattering we see here refuses to run with the pack.

While the styling breaks the rules, the interior bends to exactly what girls want. The interior is generously sized and packed with pockets. These pouches are trimmed with more of that embossed leather for extra strength, and the ribbed fabric lining should have the stuff to resist stains. Rest assured, this is one tough cookie.

It took Vincent Lai some time to find his calling, but we’re glad he finally did. He graduated from college with a degree in industrial design, and then began to design products, but today he’s the creative director of his own handbag company Skinny Vinny. The playful moniker is his attempt to reclaim the name he was teased with as a child.

It may have taken him a while to get there, but it seemed inevitable that Lai would find himself in fashion. He honed his sewing skills as a child working in his parents’ garment factory.

“I loved every second of it,” he once told Refinery 29. “I learned some important skills. I guess it was fairly inevitable that design and making satchels was what I would want to do. It’s a good bridge between the two worlds.“

Lai’s bags feature architectural and geometric shapes, along with a few handy perks like hidden pockets. They’re not very fussy or particularly on trend, but they definitely do the job. And as an added bonus, part of the proceeds from each handbag sale benefits the National Resources Defense Council.

When a skin looks this good, it doesn’t need any embellishments. Meet the minimalist, and very chic, Gabrielle clutch from Jalda.

With its tiny scales, lizard is a much more subtle alternative to crocodile or snakeskin. The Gabrielle isn’t made from real lizard though, but a convincing embossed leather. This won’t impress animal lovers, who are likely to begrudge any loss of life, but it does keep the price down a more palatable $205. It also means the purse is likely to last longer than most embossed synthetics.

Honestly, I don’t care what a purse is made from when it looks this lovely. The emerald green shade is sexy and reptilian, although the Gabrielle is also available in smoke gray, red, and black if this tone doesn’t rev you. The leather is only embellished by a gently curved flap and golden button. Honestly, it doesn’t need anything else. That skin and the purse’s retro lines speak for themselves.

The fairly sedate color palette is matched by a brightly toned inner lining. The interior is fairly roomy but not unmanageable, which is good thing too because we don’t have a shoulder strap to help us out. I think this purse is a little too large to be without a pocket, but I’m willing to overlook it for those lovely clean good looks. But the big question is, are you?

When Valentino began to add three-dimensional flowers to its luxury handbags, my heart skipped a few beats. The first beats were the initial heady symptoms of love, and the second were from shock at the prices. Thankfully I’ve found some more affordable options from Indianapolis based fashion label Sakura Urban.

These wristlets and coin purses will never be a substitute for the European luxury bags, but the label isn’t really trying to compete. There’s an earthier, more innocent charm to its designs, which are handcrafted by designers Joel and Theresa Goodwin.

This attention to detail is what really sets these purses apart. Each petal is hand-cut and curled. Every grommet is set with a hammer rather than a machine. The process sounds quite meticulous, but the Goodwins wouldn’t have it any other way.

“This allows us to control every aspect of our work. If we aren’t happy with each and every piece, we scrap it and reuse the leather for our flowers,” the designers said in a statement. “We only sell work that we are proud to call our own and don the Sakura Urban label.“

With looks fit for a queen, or perhaps a modern day princess, comes the Gailen clutch from J. Renee.

I know many fashion fans will think this purse is too much, but there’s a certain regal quality to its ostentation. I have to admire J. Renee for daring to pair fuchsia wrinkled material with iridescent crocodile trim and faceted jewels. It’s extravagant and pompous, and strangely enough I think I like it!

Of course, I wouldn’t dare to pair it with anything more than the most sedate of neutrals. But it could really punch up a little black dress, and definitely start a conversation at my next fancy function!

J. Renee has invested a lot of energy in the design, but hasn’t forgotten about practicality. The interior is spacious by evening bag standards, and kitted out with a handy zippered pocket. The slouchy design is ideal for carrying in your hand or tucked under your arm, but the dainty chain strap gives us another option.

At $109.95 the Gailen may be a little pricy for a fabric clutch, but it’s also much cheaper than any real royal accessory!

Sea Bags is doing its bit to support Breast Cancer Awareness month with the release of its new Pink Ribbon bags. The bags’ release coincides with the label’s fourth annual Cure Campaign.

“We are proud to have raised over $48,000 in funds over the past three years from this campaign for cancer research. It is great to see how quickly our custom bags sell out. We’ve attracted buyers from across the globe to help the cause,” said Sea Bags co-owner and president Beth Shissler. “With both of our families touched by cancer, my business partner, Hannah, and I wanted to do something to make a difference.“

As with all Sea Bags accessories, the eco-friendly Pink Ribbon purses are made from recycled sails. They are available in three different sizes: small, medium, large. Half of proceeds from all Pink Ribbon handbags will benefit the Maine Cancer Foundation, which helps to fund cancer research and patient support programs, and educate the state’s residents about the disease.

Sea Bags Pink Ribbon bags will be available from October 1 to December 31 from the Sea Bags website. The small bags cost $100, the medium ones $125, and the large are priced at $150.

Despite the hopes of many discerning fashionistas, it seems the taste for 80s style isn’t going anywhere. I say you can close your eyes to the cacophony of color, or you can embrace it. As I admire this J. Furmani satin evening bag, I’m beginning to think the latter is a better option!

When I first saw this purse I could easily imagine it being blown up and worn as a skirt. In fact, I’m sure I wore a skirt just like it many moons ago. Today though such a bold fashion statement might be taking the 80s trend too far. Carrying a much smaller, purse sized alternative seems like a much safer option.

Not that any accessory in such a sugary shade of pink could ever really be considered safe. The asymmetrical bottom with its soft ruffles is also far from tame, but I love the way it combines with the layered pleats on top.

I hope the looks draw you in, because the interior is pretty basic. It’s quite small, although large enough to accommodate the optional chain strap. If you think that will make the bag too cluttered don’t worry; it’s easily removable so you can leave it at home.

Our love of retro fashions won’t be around forever, but at $25 this purse is an affordable way to enjoy the trend while it lasts.

I know that if you don’t have anything nice to say that it’s better to say nothing at all, but I just can’t hold my tongue in this situation. The design of this version of the Single is so bizarre, I really can’t figure out what Mr. Jacobs was thinking.

The combination of materials here is really the problem. First, there’s the nude leather, which has been textured and sprayed to look something like stone. This might be an interesting effect if the rest of the bag made sense, but it just comes off looking cheap and fake.

Speaking of things that look cheap, the sequins that make up the rest of the bag are terrible. The fluffy, three-dimensional gold and white pattern looks more like an elementary school craft day mishap more than anything else. The puzzle piece-shaped clasp and classic chain and leather strap are both great, but by the time you get around to noticing them, it’s far too late to save this terrible fashion misadventure.

As far as Marc Jacobs bags goes, it is reasonably priced at $995. But considering how unattractive it is, who really cares?

Erin O’Connor has stepped away from the catwalk for her latest creative endeavor. The British model is preparing to release a capsule fashion line called She Died of Beauty.

Just because a model wears fashionable clothes, doesn’t mean she knows how to design them. Thankfully Erin O’Connor left nothing to chance by working with stylist Kate Halfpenny on the project.

“The very visual nature of fashion is to manipulate and exaggerate almost everything. We loved the idea of twisting a polite sentiment into a naughty yet, frivolously funny statement that we hope will appeal to all,” the pair said in a statement.

She Died of Beauty is a small collection made up of five different typographic T-shirts and two handbags. Each piece was created using ethical and organic materials.

I’m always a little nervous when I see a model trying their hand at design, as history tells us it doesn’t always work. However, with Kate Halfpenny’s involvement and the quirky messages I’m optimistic about Erin O’Connor’s line.

The She Died of Beauty T-shirts and bags will be available through the capsule collection’s official website from September 12. Are you looking forward to seeing it?
