Hype has remixed the idea of the Dylan hobo in this spacious version.

Roomier than the original Dylan handbag, this particular hobo has gone above and beyond the offerings of its smaller compatriot. In my opinion this large bag has left its sibling sprawling in the dust!

There are a number of reasons for me thinking this. Not least is the fact that if you have a slouchy and consequently casual handbag, you might as well make it roomy. A small bag will still feel great to carry, but with a purse like this one it is always nice to have extra room for your belongings. The addition of an exterior pocket really drills this point home for me, although I would have appreciated some interior compartmentalizing.

Next on my list is the color. Metallic purple may render this a little too garish for work, but it is perfect for play! Comparing it to the beige of its predecessor shows that Hype have really ramped up the glitz and glamor, even down to the bright orange interior. For me it is perfect, although I accept some people may find it hard to coordinate with their wardrobes!

In a soft leather and in a cool shape, I really like this large flap hobo. Does it do it for you?

Looking something like Cousin It’s more stylish sister comes Inge Christopher’s Caviar Bag.

That might sound like a criticism, but I like the quirkiness that Inge Christopher has employed here. The fringe is shaggy and somewhat animalistic, yet the beaded loops give it just enough class to work. At least, I think I does. As with anything that pushes the envelope fashion fans are bound to disagree, but I think Inge Christopher gets away with the risk here.

Perhaps I’m just feeling generous because I love that shade of black, which seems closer to a shade of charcoal gray. By keeping the tone more muted, Inge Christopher ensures its black is anything but basic.

I’ve talked a lot about looks, but let’s face it; this is a bag that’s all about the aesthetics. The interior is small and simple, and while it is lined it really doesn’t deliver anything more than we’d expect. It’ll handle the things you really need on an evening night, but you’ll probably have to cull a few of the items you call daily essentials.

I don’t mind this limitation though, because Inge Christopher is only charging me $90 for the privilege of carrying it. Personally that seems like a great price for unique style, but more frugal fashionistas may disagree.

The Valentino line has been a little disappointing for me lately. Particularly because I have been such a fan of it in the past, and watching what I see as its decline has been terribly depressing. But this floral leather bag gives me hope for the future of Valentino’s accessories.

The soft black leather of this bag has been intricately embroidered with a floral pattern that is awe-inspiring. The embroidered portion makes up the front pocket of the bag, which makes it seem even more dimensional, and the smooth leather of the rest of the bag and the shiny gold hardware provide a fabulous textural contrast.

The shape of the bag is somewhat unusual. It’s almost a tote, but with a decidedly more structured design. Besides the hardware and the floral embroidery, the only flourish is the braided leather handles and zipper pulls, which complement the overall texture of the bag, and are a very subtle addition.

This is a fabulously detailed, well-crafted, and very elegant way to pull off this season’s obsession with florals, and one that will last well past the flightiness of fashion. The $2,875 is a bit off-putting considering the current economic climate though, so I’ll be waiting for a less expensive designer imposter.

Hype has reinvented the boho staple, the hobo, with this bold Rebecca bag.

I usually don’t warm to handbags which favor trendy details over timeless design, but the unique way Hype has put the accents together has won me over.

I was beginning to tire of studs, but by adding them to decorative loops Hype has created a look which is more tribal than rock and roll. I also really like the unusual toggle, which holds the braided accent in place. There’s also a laidback charm to the loosely braided handles, although I’m thankful for the leather wraps which protect our shoulders from this decorative effect.

All of these elements could make the Rebecca look busy, and lovers of minimalist fashion would probably concur that it does. But I’m a bit more forgiving; I think Hype has succeeded in creating a purse which brings a fresh style to the bohemian trend.

While its looks are all fashion, its interior is made with functionality in mind. It’s very roomy, but the pair of open slips and large zippered pocket make the space seem more manageable. My only practical concern is the gathered top, which may make it difficult to access your items in a hurry.

This latte brown Rebecca is a perfect boho choice, but if you’d prefer something a little more unexpected consider it in one of the other shades including pearl white or hibiscus pink.

All too often it seems that fashion advertisements are all the same. Take some pretty models, add an exotic location, and of course those gorgeous luxury handbags, rinse and repeat. So I was thrilled to see Bottega Veneta taking some risks with its latest campaign.

The Italian fashion house has teamed with up postmodern New York artist Robert Longo for the dynamic commercials. Longo took inspiration from his own 1979 work Men in the Cities, which he reinterpreted in a bold, contemporary way. The result is an advertising campaign which captures the models out of control and struggling to survive in a climate of corporate greed and alienation.

The grand statement may be a bit much to make in a fashion spread, and in fact many critics have called it pretentious. Personally I think it looks great, although I’m not sure whether the staging overshadows the fashions. At any rate, I applaud Bottega Veneta for trying some new here, even if it isn’t entirely successful.

Hermes is a name associated with classic style and covetable good looks. But strangely, and sadly, I’m not seeing any of that in the Camail tote.

I can barely believe that this quirky tote came from the same label as the Birkin and the Kelly. It seems more like the design project of some ambitious and naïve high school student rather than the work of an esteemed fashion house. The beige felt body is lovely and wintery, and the tan leather trim is the ideal complement, but then the entire design goes awry.

Perhaps my style sensibilities aren’t as refined as the great Hermes, but I just don’t get the blue cut-out circle and striped decorative strap. They appear tacked on, and frankly their inclusion makes little sense to me. The simply shape and neutral tone of the tote definitely needed jazzing up, but this isn’t the way I’d do it.

I’m also not sure about that shoulder strap. The unusual orientation is another gamble that doesn’t appear to pay off. I’ve only seen people carrying it in their hand, so I’m not sure how easily it will slip over your shoulder. It may be more practical than it appears, but I’m not holding my breath.

While I’m griping, Hermes seems to have forgotten about this bag’s interior. A single patch pocket is left to do all the organizational work, and there isn’t even any material lining. Really Hermes? Even the bargain bin tote bags are lined!

There are just too many disappointments for me to even contemplate paying $2950 for this bag. But if you want to stand out in a crowd and you’ve got cash to burn, you may feel more positively towards this quirky tote.
