Judith Leiber is either a fashion genius or completely barmy. My opinion on this tends to waver depending on the purses I see. This Kyoto Pagoda clutch is one of those nutty purses which have me convinced the latter scenario is most likely!

Forget simply shaped purses; this one looks like a Japanese pagoda! This is impractical on so many levels. Without a shoulder strap, we’re forced to carry the purse by hand. With all those corners, you know this won’t be a pleasant experience.

The shape also compromises the clutch’s storage space. We never expect to pack a lot into an evening purse, but this one forces you to leave even essentials behind.

Just because I wouldn’t carry this clutch doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate it on a purely aesthetic level though. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the emerald cut crystal windows to the lotus shaped charms hanging from the corner of the lower eaves. It really is more like a work of art than a piece of fashion.

And if viewed as an artwork, I suppose the $6795 price tag is reasonable. Certainly the amount of work that’s gone into it helps to justify that cost. Personally though, I can’t imagine paying such a significant sum for a purse that simply looks pretty. I want more for my dollar, but you might disagree!

Jason Wu has expanded his fashion empire to feature handbags, sunglasses, and shoes. The American designer showcased the goods from his first accessories line at his New York Fashion Week show on Friday night.

The purses seem influenced by the golden age of Hollywood. There’s definitely a 1940s feel to the bags which include a traditional tote, elegant clutch, and vintage inspired Miss Wu shoulder bag with a polished nickel frame. And just who is Miss Wu? She’s the owl which serves as the brand’s mascot!

The handbags hearken back to a bygone era, but the colors are very of the moment. Look out for the Jason Wu bags in nude, luggage brown, and navy hues.

“They have an air of old world glamour but with updated, ease of a modern woman,” Jason Wu said of his line.

The Jason Wu bags will be priced between $995 and $1995. That’s relatively high, but certainly not unheard of for designer goods. They’ll hit stores in January 2011. Will you be first in line to get one?

The Tess tote from Joe’s Jeans is one of those rare creations; a handbag which looks modern without running with the pack.

Joe’s Jeans keeps its individuality by creating unique accents that refuse to bend to trends. You can have your studs and sequins. Joe’s Jeans would rather accent its tote with edgy straps and pretty ruching near the entry. The combination is one that’s feminine but full of attitude, like a modern day Pat Benetar.

While the details are contemporary, the material is classic. That washed lambskin is so opulent and appealing, and in basic black it should easily slot into your wardrobe. While some may accuse the color of being a bit pedestrian, I think it helps to temper those unusual decorative details.

The interior is generously sized, but it’s got enough features that this is an advantage rather than a flaw. There’s a large zippered pocket and a pair of open pouches, as well as a fob for holding your keys.

At $325, the Tess strikes that balance between classic good looks and interesting details at a relatively affordable price.

Chanel has released an iPad case which is strictly for its most devoted fans. Who else would spend three times the amount of the technology itself for a protective purse after all?

Of course, as with any Chanel accessory this case, known as the Mallette en cuir noir, isn’t without its charms. Its classic black leather with its quilted diamond stitching is enough to inspire envy in any onlooker.

The craftsmanship is as good as any we’d expect from the brand, and it’ll only go out of fashion once the technology itself is replaced by something sleeker and shinier.

But it’s that price tag that sticks in my craw. I don’t care how luxurious or well made it is; no gadget needs protecting by a $1555 case. Unless you’re an ardent Chanel devotee, with more money than sense, you’ll shun the Malette en cuir noir for one of the more affordable iPad cases on the market.

These days Lindsay Lohan’s wardrobe is one of the few things we can admire about her. She might not make the best life choices, but carrying accessories like this Joyce bag from JJ Winters at least she always looks stylish!

Joyce might be a name which reminds you of old ladies and the smell of lavender, but there’s nothing stuffy about this boho styled bag. It really is a hippie chick’s dream, with its casual fringe and relaxed slouchy silhouette. I’m not sure how good that black suede will look after it’s survived a few seasons, but right now it’s lush and wintery. The design is so trend conscious anyway that once the suede wears it might not be fashionable!

As with so many boho bags, the Joyce is enormous and most of us will feel slighted by the number of pockets. Designers should know that an oversized bag needs more organizational aids than this.

But JJ Winters doesn’t abandon practicality altogether with a range of carrying options. If you’re filling the Joyce to capacity you’ll want to attach the long, cross-body strap. When travelling lighter though, the two handles may suffice.

At $450 the Joyce isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s a lot more affordable than so many celebrity favorites!

Halloween Bags on eBay

Jimmy Choo gets in touch with its inner wild child with this zebra printed suede hobo. Honestly this is a bag I’m in two minds about. There’s a lot to like, but there’s also plenty that leaves me cold.

Zebra print can so easily look ostentatious, so I like its treatment here. The stripes are subtle in a shade only slightly different to the bag’s burgundy colored suede. This is also the right season for suede. Its soft, gentle texture just begs to be touched, and while it isn’t known for wearing well right now it looks lovely.

But then there are the more disappointing elements. The ring ornament is intended to be decorative, but in my opinion it doesn’t look very attractive. I’m also confused by the corset laced handle. Again, it seems overworked and not as appealing as Jimmy Choo intended. When you add all the separate parts together, they just don’t seem to make a lot of sense. The effect is one which appears more like a designer knock off than an authentic luxury purse.

But this zebra printed hobo still commands luxury prices though, in this case a whopping $1495. I don’t know about you, but I can think of several better ways to spend that kind of cash.

The queen of minimalism Jil Sander is back to her design roots with this coral leather satchel.

This is a purse which delivers exactly what we’d expect from a bag of this style. Its lines are clean and smooth, and its dual rolled handles give it a fun retro feel. In fact, this handbag could so easily have appeared ordinary if Jil Sander’s hadn’t shocked us with that coral pink color.

Coral could never be accused of being a classic shade. It’s that loud tone that is likely to polarize bagistas, but I have a feeling that’s just how Jil Sander likes things.

The interior is a little easier to love, with its generous dimensions and convenient wall pockets. There’s the usual fare here, a zippered pocket for loose change and valuables and two open pouches for gadgets, but these compartments do the job.

But there’s just no getting around that color, a shade which you’ll struggle to wear unless your wardrobe looks like Elle Woods’ closet. You’ll need her lawyer salary too if you hope to own this satchel, because at a whopping $2390 retail it doesn’t come cheaply.

In order for a bag to become a status symbol, it has to be classic and elegant enough that a lot of different women will want to carry it. It has to be crafted of the finest quality materials. The Roma has a classic shape that is emboldened by the gold hardware details. The fold-over clasp has a finely wrought clasp that is beautiful and makes the bag secure. The only really drawback I see is that this little bit of leather is the only closure on the bag. This makes it easy to get into for, but also for potential thieves, if you have to worry about such things.

At $3,080, the Roma tote is well-priced for a status bag, so snap it up quick before its popularity and its price tag soar.
