Versace’s classic Italian aesthetic has taken a new turn this season. With a dark, rich color palette and sumptuous materials, the line is bringing its signature sense of bling to more minimal designs. I haven’t really been a huge fan of Versace in the past, but bags like this leather and suede one are quickly making me change my mind.

The deep purple suede on this bag looks very elegant set off against the textured black leather. The color  is an amazing ultraviolet, and the soft, nubbly texture of the suede gives it a lot of depth. The ring detail has an almost medieval look to it set against such a dark palette, but the shape of the bag keeps it looking modern.

This bag is almost briefcase-shaped, and if you have a bohemian sensibility, it might just make a great office bag. The size is large enough to accommodate a laptop and all the usual daily gear. I’m not sure the slim strap is made for towing around all your files, but it’s a really cool way to make a statement everyday.

This bag’s unique design makes it almost seem worth the $2,950 price tag. If you have the extra cash and want something streamlined, but still a little off-kilter, this is a great choice.

I love when a brand decides that perhaps the time has come to pay homage to the iconic designs of yesteryear. This time it is Fossil who has decided to recreate some of the handbags of the past in a shiny new format.

The advantage of this, of course, is that you get the tried and tested designs that make vintage products so beautiful, but in new leather and without that inevitable wear and tear. Whilst leather satchels like this Re-issue from Fossil may wear well (there is nothing like a soft old leather to make a satchel look authentic), it is still quite nice to have one that is brand new.

The vintage design does resemble those traditional cowboy-esque bags we all know and love, although I can’t vouch for whether the quality will be the same lifetime lasting type that those old handbags used to be. Still, for $129 you are getting a genuine leather bag that, at the very least, will never go out of fashion.

I think this practical vintage purse design will always look good, and for the price it is a real bargain!

Bottega Veneta’s use of materials is almost always extraordinary. Its designers just have an unparalleled eye for texture. This extraordinary clutch combines snakeskin and woven metallic paper in an ingenious and beautiful way.

This bag has a unique look that I have never seen before. It has a fold-over envelope design with a clasp. The exterior is made of woven metallic leather and paper, the interior is snakeskin, and it is fully lined in suede. The complexity of materials used to produce this bag is astounding, and every detail is extremely well-chosen.

The scarab clasp on this bag is breathtaking. The bag itself has so much texture that, while the clasp is elaborate and ornate, it doesn’t take away from the bag at all. The scarab and the intrecciato weave are both Bottega signatures, and it has combined them here beautifully.

At $2,250, this is definitely a luxury bag. But unlike so many luxury goods out there, I can actually see where the money’s being spent: on the materials.

Vanessa Bruno is quickly gaining a reputation for herself in the fashion world, and it’s definitely a good one. Her bags are less formal and less expensive than a lot of designer bags out there, which makes them appealing to a young, hip demographic. This leather shoulder bag is another great addition to her growing line.

Salvatore Ferragamo delivers plenty of shine and style with this playful Miss Vara Bow Bag.

I can definitely imagine Minnie Mouse carrying this bright red patent leather purse. The iconic cartoon character would certainly appreciate the purse’s miniature mouse-sized stature and its oversized grosgrain ribbon bow. As a human though, I’ve got a few minor complaints.

While mice might love the size, regular-sized folks will likely have to leave a few of their favorite items behind. The stiff patent leather body doesn’t lend itself to overstuffing, so it’s essentials only ladies. I’m also a bit disappointed by the grosgrain bow; it provides an interesting contrast to the glossy red leather but I find myself craving a bit more shine.

But I can’t be too hard on the Miss Vara bow bag. It’s very, very cute, and sometimes that can override our good sense. I’m already starting to imagine the way it would pop when paired with my favorite little black dress. That vision almost makes me willing to part with the $595 this mini bag costs. Almost.

Project Chol Chol aims to make its Mapuche Modern fashions available through selected vendors in 2011. Profits will benefit the Mapuche women and the Chol Chol Foundation, an American non-profit group which promotes the economic and social development of the South American communities.

With winter chills upon us, we tend to forget about surf brands like Roxy. That’s a shame, because with the Camden satchel the label creates the kind of purse that will serve you well no matter what the season.

The Camden is one of those rare bags which offers the style we crave backed up by plenty of substance. The crackly weathered finish is gorgeous in this deep blue black, and it wasn’t until I looked at the price tag that I realized it wasn’t calfskin. For a mere $38, this vinyl is one of the better leather alternatives that I’ve seen.

Studs may be on the way out, but I don’t mind the way they’re used here. Roxy has shown real restraint by including just a handful of the hardware accents on top. The extra studs on the pockets’ zipper pulls are too much for my tastes, but they’re not deal breakers.

The deep front pockets are complemented by more pockets inside the spacious interior. They make this space seem more manageable without forcing us to leave any of our favorite items behind.

It doesn’t take a lot of fashion risks, but for such a small price it’s hard to fault this functional Roxy satchel

Valentino is one of my favorite lines of all time, because, for the most part, the house is extremely consistent in terms of design. They’ve been putting out tasteful, but luxurious, feminine classics for half a century. This studded lizard clutch is an amazing addition to an already fabulous line.

The lizard skin on this bag is, in one word, extraordinary. I have no idea what kind of reptile it comes from, but it looks like something straight out of Oz. Valentino calls the color scheme grey and creme, but it is so shimmery as to be almost metallic. Whatever the magical combination is here, the material looks luminescent.

The shape is a simple, hard-cased rectangle, reminiscent of the 1920s. It is geometrical and minimal and allows the opulent texture of the reptile material to be the centerpiece. Ordinarily, I might balk at adding studs to such a perfectly simple bag, but on this clutch, it seems to emphasize the amazing texture without taking away from it.

At $3,400, this is a serious designer bag at a serious price. Honestly, though, for such exotic materials, it’s almost a bargain. If haute couture is your bag, this is definitely the bag for you.
