We’re all starting to reach for our sweaters as fall takes hold, and there’s more cold weather ahead. To make sure you’re prepared once winter hits, fashion forecasters have already begun to predict the kind of purses you’ll want to carry.

The new crop of bags will continue the industry’s shift away from obvious branding and towards more timeless pieces. Rather than It bags, designers are focusing on new interpretations of classic pieces while frugal bagistas look towards vintage store finds. Read on for a closer look at the must have handbags for winter 2010/2011.

Colors

The muted neutral tones of winter are perfect for rocking the military look. Think of purses that combines fashion and functionality in gray and khaki tones. Military apparel will also be big this season, but you may look a bit matchy-matchy if you pair the two. Instead opt for a military-inspired handbag to add some casual cool to your favorite jeans and sweater ensemble.

Patchwork will also make a comeback this year, but it’ll be reinvented in new, interesting ways. Look for bags which feature more creative shapes and color combinations than the old Coach signature purses.

With television drama Mad Men still driving our taste for vintage style, it seems that the popularity of structured day bags won’t wane any time soon. This ladylike style, with its clean lines and classic appeal, is right in keeping with the taste for timeless accessories.

Funnily enough this season the clutches are getting bigger as the cross-body bags are getting smaller. Portfolio envelope clutches are ideal for the office or an evening out, while small framed cross-body bags or tiny satchel styles will hold the bare essentials while you’re on the go.

When you need to carry more than a lipstick and wallet, larger messenger style satchels are your go to purse. They’ll look more luxurious than your typical college school bag in leather, denim, and soft suede.

For your boho fix look to long-handled bucket bags with drawstring closures. Balenciaga’s Classic Pampille Cross and Mulberry’s Edna (pictured below) are great examples of this relaxed, 1970s inspired style.

Looks

Just because contemporary fashion shuns logos and branding doesn’t mean that luxury is any less popular. This season it’s all about showing your wealth through the finish and accents. Look for purses finished in tapestry, brocade, and shaggy fur (faux of course!). Feathers and jewels are also fun ways to make an opulent statement.

Animal print never really goes away, but leopard spots will be back in force this winter. Keep the rest of your outfit simple and allow the wild print of bags like the Jimmy Choo Ally and Michael Kors Berkley clutch to shine.

If you dare to be different, don’t just restrict your knits to sweaters and coats. Cosy knitted day bags and cable knit clutches will add a sense of wintery fun to your outfit. Roger Vivier embraces its whimsical side with this playful suede shoulder purse.

I must admit, this is the last accessory I expected to see from the fashion house known for its sleek, retro designs. I imagine a young girl might make something like this if someone handed them a plain black bag, a few heart details, and a glue gun. They’d probably think the colored hearts bordered in gemstones were beautiful, but as an adult I’m less enthusiastic. The golden rope spelling out Roger Vivier’s initials only adds to that home-made feel.

I’m sure someone will love the innocence that comes from a purse that looks like a child made it, but I’m just not feeling it. It all looks too haphazard and juvenile for a bag costing $1795. That price should buy elegance and luxury, not an accessory that looks like a craft project.

The exterior really lets down what could have been a very tempting purse. With three expanding compartments it’s made to hold more than the average evening purse. While the chain straps are nothing special to look at, they’re another practical addition that only makes me wish this clutch looked better.

If you like this purse I suggest inviting your child to recreate it with supplies from your local craft store. You’ll save yourself a whole lot of cash, and it likely won’t look any worse.

British actress Liz Hurley is the latest celebrity to try her hand at designing purses. Liz is responsible for this Limited Edition Elizabeth bag, an elegant clutch released through Aspinal of London.

To call this purse a celebrity designed handbag may be a bit of a stretch as it’s not too dissimilar to the brand’s iconic Manhattan clutch. But it does come numbered and signed by Liz Hurley, so there’s certainly some appeal for her fans.

It’s also quite practical, with a bonus make-up mirror hidden inside and a luxurious looking gold chain clutch. It comes in a choice of three colors: gold mirror patent, gold snakeskin printed calf leather, and this classic black patent.

Aspinal will donate $150 from the sale of each $445 purse to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which should help to sweeten the deal. It makes me wonder why the purse isn’t available in the traditional breast cancer awareness pink!

Roberto Cavalli has created some of the quirkiest and kookiest bags that I’ve ever seen. So I was surprised to see the designer release this fairly pedestrian logo detail bag.

The name really doesn’t leave much to the imagination, and neither does the bag. There are logo details all over the material, which is an affordable blend of polyamide and leather. I’ve never been a fan of signature prints, but in these mellow tones this one isn’t as obnoxious as some. It’s also not as exciting.

The shape too makes me yawn, a nondescript but functional silhouette which will hold most things you need while blending into the background. The curved reptilian leather trim is the most interesting part of this purse, but even it’s not enough to make me part with my cash.

There’s nothing wrong with a designer trying something new, and there’s certainly a place for classic handbags in any closet. But this one isn’t as well executed as it might be. Roberto Cavalli’s usual fans will likely be disappointed by its lack of innovation, while anyone who’s never warmed to his designs will be too disinterested in this one to reevaluate their stance.

That’s unfortunate because at less than $200, this is an affordable way to get some Roberto Cavalli into your wardrobe.

Burberry is known for its conservative designs and iconic plaid print, but the line is much more diverse than most people know. This rock star fabulous Knight bag shows off the brand’s edgier side.

The surface of this black leather bag is absolutely covered with tiny silver studs. They’re big enough to look totally badass, but small enough that from far away they sparkly beautifully. Seriously, this adornment is really masterfully done, because even though the leather is covered with studs the surface stays supple and malleable.

I also love the classic shape of this satchel. It’s simple and minimal, but the studded leather makes it look dark and opulent. Burberry has balanced out the studded parts of the bag with smooth leather accents that keep it classy. This is biker-inspired chic at its best. Not to mention it’s most comfortable. The dual rolled leather handles are going to make the Knight easy to carry all day, every day, and the organizational side pockets make it practical without taking away from the look.

Unfortunately, at $2,195, the Knight simply isn’t affordable for most of us. And with this level of style, I wouldn’t count on it going on sale anytime soon. The best we can hope for is a really solid knock-off.

Steve Madden has taken charge of Betsey Johnson’s fashion label after buying its debt.

The agreement sees Johnson pay back Madden rather than a large faceless lender, and the company’s big wigs couldn’t be happier.

“Whenever you come out of a situation with a good partner, cash coming into the business and the elimination of all debt, what’s not to love?” asking Betsey Johnson’s executive vice-president and chief operating officer Jonathan Friedman.

With Madden on board, Betsey Johnson will focus on expanding its fashion empire. He hopes to see shoe sales represent around 30% of total sales over the next year, and more daytime dresses added to the line.

While Madden has his own line and designing chops, he assures us he’ll leave all the creative work to the flamboyant Ms Johnson.

“Betsey is my partner,” he explained. “She has nothing to worry about and I will protect her. … She is not on the hook for anything.“

I may not always warm to Betsey Johnson’s outrageous accessories, but I’m thrilled to see the company’s found a way to survive despite its financial hardships. Are you excited to see what the brand comes up with next?

Rebecca Minkoff sends our expectations sky high with the provocatively named Rapture satchel.

I don’t know about you, but I didn’t exactly have a rapturous response when I spied this carryall. It looks nice enough and all, but its conservative tones and subdued details didn’t inspire ecstasy. While Rebecca Minkoff doesn’t achieve all she sets out to with this satchel, it’d be a mistake to overlook it.

There’s a classic charm about the Rapture, with its sophisticated glazed leather and traditional shape. But it’s not completely staid. The angular zippered pockets up front are a great way to combine convenience and style, and the flirty tassel makes sure we all know Rebecca Minkoff isn’t playing things entirely safe.

But it’s when we start to use the Rapture that it really comes into its own. All those exterior pockets are complemented by durable leather trimmed pouches inside. There’s enough space to carry everything you need to survive a day at the office or a serious shopping spree. Those handles are probably a little too short for girls with medium to large builds to comfortably carry over the shoulder, but Rebecca Minkoff has also added a much longer detachable strap.

It might not inspire the kind of bliss Rebecca Minkoff had hoped for, but this Rapture satchel still does enough to warrant it’s $595 price tag.

I’ve kept a close eye on DKNY, lately. Perhaps it’s because the economy is so bad, and the prices of some of the more haute designer lines seem inaccessible. But also because I feel the line is transforming itself into a design house that can be depended on to produce high quality staples like this eyelet tote.

The purple nylon on this tote is really eye-catching. I love the way the multi-dimensional color catches the light. The fabric has a light sheen that isn’t ostentatious, but is definitely noticeable. And the quilting of course, is totally on-trend.

The tote’s generous size and open top make it an ideal bag for running errands or carrying all your everyday stuff. Although it’s lined in satin, so you might not want to just throw your veggies fresh from the farmer’s market in there. My only concern with this tote is the slim leather handle on the chain strap. It seems a little flimsy to handle all the stuff I’d want to put in there.

Overall, this is a great tote at a great price. For $125, DKNY has made a stylish, but classic, bag that will take your through your day comfortably.

New York designer Kate Spade is taking her iconic vintage-inspired handbags across the pond to launch a pop-up show in London’s Covent Garden later this month.

The brand is already popular with celebrity Brits like Sienna Miller and Annie Lennox’s model daughter Tali, so it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the country joins in.

The two-storey Henrietta Street outlet will feature four rooms cleverly designed to look like the typical Kate Spade lover’s apartment. Each one will feature a gorgeous array of Kate Spade accessories, from wild leopard print tote bags to elegant jewel-toned clutch purses. Comfy ballerina flat shoes and retro-inspired apparel will sit alongside the famous purses.

The store promises to open with a star-studded launch party. Amber Le Bon and Ben Grimes are already confirmed to DJ the night alongside The Like.

I could call the Madrid clutch from Rampage many things, but boring isn’t one of them!

Rather than offering European elegance, the Madrid seems determined to shock. The pretty ruched flap could have been feminine if not for the chunky chain snaking through it. It’s not the only serpentine element of this purse; the snake print body peeks out from underneath the flap. Its shades don’t really complement the matte flap, but this isn’t a purse that wants to blend in.

The Madrid definitely makes a style statement; I only wish I understood what it was trying to say. I always applaud a brand that takes a few fashion risks, but I’m not sure that Rampage’s gambles have paid off.

It’s a shame because on a purely practical level this clutch is difficult to fault. It’s spacious enough to hold everything we could ever need to enjoy an evening out, and with an optional shoulder strap it won’t feel unmanageable once it’s loaded up. The inner zip pocket is a convenient way to keep our loose change and other small valuables secure, so we can even leave our wallet at home.

But I just can’t get over those garish looks. They might strike a chord with another fashionista, but they’re just not for me.
