San Francisco based handbag brand 49 Square Miles has always been proud of its Bay Area heritage. Its bags are named after some of the city’s favorite sons, including Jack Kerouac, Dave Eggers, and Robert Louis Stevenson. And now it wants its fans to speak up about what they love about San Fran.

The brand is inviting its admirers to say what makes San Francisco great. Prepare to be pithy though, as you’ll only have 49 words or less to do it.

“We realize that our brand is about more than what we say it is; our brand is the sum total of many conversations. With this in mind, we created this initiative to invite consumers in and define our brand through self-expression,” explained 49 Square Miles founder Lisa Rissetto.

Folks who participate through the 49 Square Miles Facebook fan page have a chance to win one of the brand’s new Bigmouth hobo bags. The handbag brand’s staff will vote on the eventual winner. Just don’t call it a competition.

“We don’t see this as a contest; rather, we feel this is an exercise in community and poetry,” explained Risetto. “We hope that our customers have as much fun with this as we think they will—I would love to be able to do this once a season.“

It sounds like fun, don’t you think? And the possibility of bagging a new hobo just sweetens the deal!

There is nothing “daytime” about the East/West clutch. From the gathered and pleated satin body to the big bold gem decoration, this evening bag would look as out of place in the sunlight as a fish out of water. This doesn’t always mean that the evening look is great, but in this case it thankfully does! The simple design and elegant materials really work.

Even better, this handbag is cheap. At just $50, this is more than reasonably priced, especially considering that the black tie events you will wear it to will no doubt be pretty classy. Of course there is always the risk of a jewel falling off at some point in the future, but what can you do?

Although there are other satin clutches like this on the market, I do think that this Jessica McClintock version is a classy and affordable possibility.

Suede and patent leather combinations are everywhere at the moment, and the Coined purse from Bodhi offers one of the most unusual colors of the bunch.

First you have that traditional tan suede, in a wonderful caramel camel shade that will work really well with the current fashion favorites. Then, gathering that soft suede is a bronze metallic patent strap, which really adds a frisson of interest. I think we can conclude that the color choices are bang on the money!

Then, of course, there is the decoration. The two teeny-tiny coin purses on the patent band are where this clutch got its name, but I am not entirely convinced. They are cute, no doubt about it, but I wonder if Bodhi has thought them through. After all, they aren’t exactly functional, they are that small!

Otherwise, however, this is a pretty purse, especially thanks to the wavy shape.

We all need a few wardrobe essentials, and Serpui Marie hopes its Essential Minaudiere will be one of them.

I’d love to add it to my collection. Its snakeskin finish is so delicate, a welcome alternative to the bold mottled skins we so typically see. This is much richer, especially in this bold ruby red. If you want even more glitz, consider the Essential in silver or antique gold.

That snakeskin is the star attraction here, but it’s not the only thing that sells that clutch. I love the look of the large tab clasp, the structured minaudiere’s soft curves, and that practical shoulder strap.

Of course though, no minaudiere is completely practical. Its dainty stature isn’t made to hold much more than keys and cards, but who wants to feel weighed down on an evening out anyway? I’m willing to leave a few things behind to look this glam.

If I had a spare $335 lying about I’d rush out and buy this purse tomorrow. Of course that price is incredibly reasonable for a genuine exotic accessory; it’s just a bit rich for my blood!

Savanna ditches fashion forward looks for something a bit more unique with this Double Handle Beaded Satchel.

Honestly, I’m still trying to work out if I like it or not. The delicate flowers along the top are beautiful, but they seem at odds with the beaded handles. I like that Savanna has taken a risk here, opting for something more eye-catching than a boring metal chain, but I’m not sure the gamble pays off. Aside from my aesthetic doubts, I’m not convinced the stones will feel very good in the palm of our hand.

Over-the-shoulder toting is also out as the handles are too short, but with a purse of this size it shouldn’t be too much of a concern. With such small dimensions, we won’t ever feel overburdened with it. Of course, the obvious downside is that we’re limited to the very barest of essentials when we step out.

But Savanna offers us a purse with a very distinct look, which is unusual for a bag costing just $40.

Bodhi is embracing the digital age with its new Tech Collection of accessories. The cute range looks to hold our favorite gadgets, including iPads and iPods, cell phones, cameras, computers, and Kindles.

Many of the Tech Collection bags are also Transportation Security Administration approved, so you needn’t worry about taking them with you on your travels.

I rarely mind a bag with a few frills and frippery, but with this Cecilia tote I think Sara Berman may have gone a step too far.

I can’t help but think of a clown’s shirt, with frilly accents and buttons dotting down, as I look at this tote. It’s just got that same sort of silliness about it, and not even the zippered edge on the frill can help to temper it. If you’re hoping to turn heads, this Cecilia tote is likely to do it. I just can’t promise you’ll want the attention it’ll attract.

I thought perhaps Sara Berman would make the interior a bit tamer, but I was wrong. There are few things wilder than a leopard print lining after all. But aside from all the flash, the interior is quite a practical space with plenty of room for carrying everything you need and the pockets it takes to keep them organized.

It’ll take the most neutral of outfits to really work with this Cecilia Frill Tote, but if you’ll looking for something different it will definitely fit the bill!

It seems that Sofia Coppola’s line for Louis Vuitton was more than a flight of fancy. The British film director has just released her second collection for the luxury French brand.

The new Louis Vuitton SC bags stick with the formula that made the originals so successful, but they’ve been given a new up market facelift. Look for new shades and combinations of leather and crocodile skin.

The color palette is ready for cooler weather; cream, cobalt, donkey suede, and asphalt suede are conservative but still just a little unexpected.

They’re not cheap with an average price tag of €4, 000, but what Louis Vuitton bag ever is? I think they’re a lot more appealing than the label’s obnoxious signature print handbags, so it’s surprising to see them pushed to the background in many of the advertisements.

It makes me wonder whether Louis Vuitton is attempting to sell the handbags, or Sofia Coppola herself!

Santi may have ditched the beads and sequins this time around, but that doesn’t mean that this Madeline clutch has any less glitz!

Her pizazz comes from its fuchsia pink leather, which has been gathered up in an adorable way. It’s very cutesy, and frothy, and probably completely unpalatable if you’re not the girliest of girly girls.

I quite like the idea behind this purse, but I feel its execution lets it down. Those gathers are just a bit awkward; there’s no symmetry or style to it, and that undermines the look. For $215, I expect better than this.

Still, the Madeline isn’t without charm. Its design is fun, and with a chain strap it’s even functional. It’s very small, which is both a blessing and a curse. Sure, you might need to leave some of your favorite items behind, but a large mass of gathered fuchsia leather would surely be a bigger sin.

The Madeline isn’t a perfect purse, but it’s probably unique enough to tempt a few Elle Woods inspired girls to lay their money down.
