Matt & Nat uses zippers in a unique and unexpected way in this bold P10 Vega handbag.

There’s a zipper along the top, but my eyes are more quickly drawn to the zips adorning the bag’s body. They accent the diagonal swatches of coated canvas, which are woven together to create a dramatic finish.

While the coated canvas has all the green credentials of Matt & Nat’s signature vegan leather, it doesn’t feel even remotely as luxurious. I’m also not sure about the way the material puckers around the zippered highlights. I suppose that was the look Matt & Nat aimed for, but it’s just not as clean as I’d like.

While the designers take risks on the outside, they give us just what we’ve come to expect inside. That kind of predictability isn’t really a bad thing; I’ve always loved the range’s suede-like lining made from recycled plastic bottles, and the plethora of pockets will certainly come in handy. Those handles are a bit shorter than I’d like, but with an attachable shoulder strap on offer there’s little to complain about.

Little to complain about except, perhaps, the price. Personally $225 seems too much to pay for a bag made from canvas. However if the Vega’s unique looks have won you over, you might be willing to accept that slightly too high bottom line.

Lanvin’s line of Happy bags have a unique attitude that’s casual and sophisticated at the same time. This Happy medium bag is my absolute favorite of the bunch.

It’s seems fitting that this bag is called the “Happy Medium,” because the size is not only mid-range amongst the line, but the style is also halfway between classic and modern. The rich brown leather material has a casual, almost rakish look to it. The gently weathered texture makes  the bag look nicely worn in, but the sassy straps keep it looking classy.

I love the incongruity of the boxy shaped bag with these long, elegant straps. The sparkling crystal embellishments and grosgrain ribbons are small girlish touches on an otherwise traditionally beautiful bag. At $1,690, the Happy Medium bag is reasonably priced for what it is: a timeless, modern accessory that will be stylish for decades.

Rebecca Minkoff punches up this classic structured Flame satchel with a smattering of studs.

Studs are beginning to get a little tired, but the traditional silhouette of this satchel should help make the Flame appear current even once the trend has completely passed.

The evergreen appeal is only enhanced by the studs themselves, delicate things with round domes and square pyramid shapes. They’re arranged in neat rows on each side of the bag; that treatment isn’t as rock and roll as studs tend to be, but personally I think that’s a good thing. By veering left of center, Rebecca Minkoff gives the accents a bit more life.

After the sedate camel colored exterior, I was thrilled to see more of the playful Rebecca Minkoff we’ve come to know and love hidden inside. Sturdy twill is printed with colored birds, brightening up this practical space. The pockets are lined with leather for extra durability, so you’ll have no problems using this as your everyday satchel. At least there’ll be no problems if you can make peace with the fairly short straps.

And if it does become an everyday bag, that bottom line of $595 seems quite reasonable indeed. But is it worth $100 more than any of Rebecca Minkoff’s other Flame satchels? You be the judge!

Big Buddha embraces its feminine side with this girly Daisy bag.

This purse is covered with ruffles, which like the flower that inspired its name are feminine without being overly fussy. The plain curved flap helps to temper all those frills, as do the conservative colors available. I love the rich wine colored burgundy, but you could also choose black, gray, or a rich purple shade.

I ordinarily long for more playful colors on such a flirty bag, but I think Big Buddha gets the balance right here. By choosing more sedate shades we can easily pair the Daisy with our favorite pair of jeans or another casual ensemble. It’ll give an everyday outfit a feminine lift just as easily as it will make your evening get-up more sassy. I’m not talking about black tie mind you, but it would suit a movie or dinner date.

That versatility is backed up by the Daisy’s generous dimensions and clever design. The double chain strap and cross-body strap are both removable for clean good looks no matter what the carrying mode. The interior is packed with pockets, and there’s another secure one in the back if we’re still left wanting.

At $78.95, Big Buddha packs an awful lot into this Daisy bag. That makes it worth the investment, despite its lack of luxury materials.

Cheap and cheerful is the name of the game with this brilliantly affordable tote from Devon & Jones.

OK, so there is nothing fancy about this. It is a simple drawstring rucksack, perfect for carrying bits and pieces, and probably most ideally suited to toting sports kits and other such things. The fabric is sensible but inexpensive, and the shape is purely functional.

Whilst this $9.99 Cinch Sak is basic, that doesn’t mean it is entirely boring. After all, the designers have put in the effort by adding the quilted decoration, making it prettier than many of the boring plain nylon versions that you see around.

This is a cute and simple purse for a bargain price!

Since Valentino’s retirement, the line’s accessories have taken many turns, some good, and unfortunately, some not so good. This is really interesting when you take into consideration that the line is currently being run by the designers that have been designing the house’s accessories for years. Regardless of the designers’ pedigrees, they still manage to horror me with bags like this Glam Zebra tote.

Talk about gilding the lily! This bag is seriously overburdened with embellishment. The zebra pattern is created with a mixture of metallic sequins and beads. This material, all on its own, would be a lot. But then they’ve added metallic fringe to the bottom! It looks like Christmas tree tinsel, and not in a good way.

Even the bottom of the bag is sequined, which is not only totally impractical, but looks terrible. Can you imagine trying to carry this bag with any sort of gown? It would be covered in nicks and pulls in a second flat. Not to mention your hose.

The bucket shape is the simplest part of the bag, and it would be a decent base if it weren’t so overloaded. If you’re offended by the aesthetics of this bag (or lack thereof), just wait til you hear the price. $3,495. Yep. That’s a solid down payment on an economy car, readers, which would be a much better investment.

If one buckle on a handbag can be a nice accessory and cute decorative feature, then what will people think of a handbag that features not one, not two, but ten buckles on the front alone?

OK, so I am just guessing that this is the thinking that went on in the Giuseppe Zanotti design studios. There may well have more to it, of course: a homage to military or utilitarian fashion for example, or some sort of balancing of metal buckles with deep brown leather. Whatever the deliberation, however, the end result is the same!

Although I mock, I do actually really like this leather clutch. The dark color keeps the over-decoration sophisticated, whilst the asymmetrical  shape mixes things up a little. My main reservation though is the price. For $1,115 you perhaps want something more evening suitable, and you definitely want a handbag with a decent closure and an optional handle!

Although this buckled clutch has its drawbacks, it is still one of the best interpretations of military style that I have seen in recent months.

Azzedine Alaia’s designs have a subtle flair for the dramatic. This fall season has been full of particularly striking bags that are classy and eye-catching all at the same time. You couldn’t find a bag more glamorous and, yet, still as versatile as this animal print calf hair clutch.

The black and yellow leopard print looks ultra luxe in in soft calf hair. The foldover pouch shape is a great combination of soft and streamlined. The sleek foldover front keeps the look neat, and the black edging emphasizes the strong lines of the bag.

At $1,530, this clutch is pricey, but not unreasonable in the designer realm. That’s particularly true when you consider the timeless appeal of the design and the growing cache of the Alaia line.
