Hype brings some modern edge to the traditional doctor satchel with the Helen bag.
Despite its stuffy name, I can’t imagine any real medical practitioner carrying this satchel bag. With its snake print embossing and shiny studs, it’d look more at home at a heavy metal concert than a hospital. Those accents could have become overwhelming, but Hype has been very clever when designing this satchel.
The delicate snakeskin scales are unobtrusive, adding just a touch of luxury without trying to dominate the design. The studs have also been applied with similar restraint. By keeping them predominantly on the front pocket, the hardware is also in the balance.
That clever approach to design happily extends beyond the aesthetics. I’d call this a mid-sized bag, so I was surprised to see two separate main compartments. This sort of luxury is typically reserved for much larger handbags, but it’s still a blessing here. If you can’t keep these sections free of clutter, you’re not trying hard enough!
My only complaint is that the dual handles are a shade too short. It’s not as problematic as it may have been on a larger bag, but carrying this bag by hand may still be awkward if you’ve got a long day ahead.
Considering all the value Hype offers inside and out, I’m pleasantly surprised to see the Helen priced at $250. It’s still not small change, but for a bag that offers so much it’s a steal.
