Jimmy Choo’s new designs are making waves. Literally. The line’s new wave-textured bags are extraordinarily innovative and beautiful. This Alba Tote is a fabulous new addition to Jimmy Choo’s repertoire.

I’m crazy for the tan color of the Alba. It’s something between light brown and a pinkish nude, and very of-the-moment. Stylish though the color may be, it takes second place to the design. The honeycomb patchwork pattern is a great geometric contrast to the waves.

The minimal shape is a great backdrop for all the exciting textures on the surface of the bag. I especially like how the wave pattern continues onto the thick, comfortable straps. Honestly, I am overwhelmingly impressed with the overall design of this bag. It’s a modern bag with enough classic elements to keep it from looking trendy. Unfortunately, for $2,695, I’ll be waiting for the knock offs to hit stores.

Oh, Marc Jacobs, what would fashion do without you? You’ve brought your irreverent design sensibility to bear on American clothing in a permanently transformative way. This Shifty tote is a perfect example of Jacobs’ quirky style.

The smooth black leather is supple with a muted gloss. The discreet gold hardware is a low key, upscale touch, which is offset by the edgy, prominent straps. The intricate seam designs show off the great craftsmanship of the Shifty and up the class factor on this casual tote.

The squared-off duffel shape of the Shift is almost luggage-like. For me, this takes something away from the overall look of the bag. If it were just a little bit smaller and more ladylike, it would be extremely covetable, but as it is, it’s a little awkward.

The Shifty is still a really cool tote, but I wish Marc Jacobs had taken it a little farther, stylewise, in a single direction. For $475, I want a slightly more cohesive design.

Jimmy Choo’s designs have been getting edgier and edgier the past few seasons. They haven’t just been getting edgier, either, they’ve been getting more and more innovative. His latest textured bags are some of my favorite that the line has ever put out, and the Saba is one of them.

The black leather strips that make up the Saba have been arranged in an undulating, wave-like pattern. I really like the way that Choo has broken up the weaves with upraised seams, because the vertical lines reinforce the pattern’s overall curviness,

The shape of the Saba is like a squared-off hobo. It’s slouchy enough to be casual, but the seam designs give it a more structured look, and keep it from appearing sloppy. The asymmetric handle is a great touch, but I don’t know how I feel about the silver and leather bracelet. It’s just a little weird and, for me, it interrupts what would otherwise be an almost perfect minimal design.

I wouldn’t kick the Saba out of my closet, but at $2,695, I won’t be rushing out to buy it, either.

Donna Karan is celebrating 25 years in the fashion business, which can only mean one thing: a collection of limited edition handbags to mark the occasion.

First cab off the ranks is this ultra luxurious Python Anniversary Large Shoulder Bag. The authentic python skin is the big draw card here in that deep, emerald green color. It’s also spacious enough to use every day, something the structured design should make pretty easy. There’s a zippered pocket and two open pouches inside, and all your precious cargo will stay safe thanks to the drawstring closure.

I’m not sure about it on a practical level though. Snakeskin might be lovely, but it’s also a fairly fragile material. You’ll need to be very careful if you hope to make this your everyday shoulder bag.

This luxurious handbag is available for $4200 from Donna Karan stores and online. For that price, I’d want to get plenty of use from it!

I believe there are two kinds of fashion fans in this world: the ones who adore Ed Hardy’s designs and the ones that don’t. I’ve come to this realization after much time spent trying to warm to the tattoo prints and bold colors. I’m sorry Ed Hardy; I just can’t do it.

I can see the positives of a bag like the Regina. It’s impressive to see metal feet protecting the platform base at this price point. The heart-shaped coin purse is both clever and convenient. The synthetic centers give our shoulders blessed relief from all the metal on the straps.

But those tattoo graphics are beginning to feel very tired. This one is more nice than naughty, with its pretty flowers and love birds, but I’m still not feeling it. If you’re not a fan this probably won’t be the Ed Hardy bag to change your mind. And if you are, dare I suggest that it may be a bit soft for your tastes?

At $210 this isn’t an expensive bag, but considering its synthetic materials I can’t really see value here.

Fair trade handbag label Bolingo Bags has just released a new holiday collection to celebrate the end of 2010. The purses feature exotic skins in playful, seasonal shades.

“There’s no better way for the discriminating woman to enhance her holiday look than with an ostrich and crocodile handbag in a rich shade of bronze or cypress green, an elegant metallic platino or stunning iris blue,” explained Bolingo Bags’ designer Susan Todd.

The new collection features a new green version of Bolingo’s famous Outback bag, which is spacious enough to suit holiday vacations or overnight stays with the in-laws. There’s also a silvery clamshell clutch ready for those office Christmas parties and holiday balls, and a pretty almond colored hobo crafted from authentic ostrich skin.

I know many fashionistas shun the use of exotic skins, but at least the ones from Bolingo Bags are sustainably harvested. They’re also handcrafted by South African artisans working under fair trade conditions.

Boston bags have always been a little bit staid for my tastes, and I’ve longed for a designer to come along and give the style some much needed pizzazz. You know what they say about being careful what you wish for.

Nicole Lee has taken the classic Boston bag silhouette and bedazzled it. There’s just so much going on here. Metal tubing creates ferris wheel spokes near the sides, while black tassels hang down from the center. As if this wasn’t enough, we see black trim and thick stitching all about the purse. For me there’s just too much going on, although I suppose a more daring fashionista may disagree.

The jewelry printed inner lining seems a bit like overkill when coupled with such an elaborately patterned bag, but when you strip that away the interior is fairly functional. There’s as much space as you could ever want on a day out, and the pockets are trimmed with synthetic to help them survive daily use.

This Selena Boston bag is a bit of a fashion risk, but at $59.99 thankfully it’s not an expensive one.

Alexander Wang’s emphasis on quality over quantity has made him a cult favorite in the fashion world. He’s something of a designer’s designer, meaning that he’s very influential and an editorial favorite. This Trudy bag is a great example of his cutting edge design sensibility at work.

This pale, pink-y nude is the color of the season, maybe even the past few seasons. The soft color is neutral, but definitely not boring. On the Trudy the delicate color is balanced out with a totally bad ass, rock-n-roll design, which makes it infinitely more interesting.

This tote is absolutely giant, like luggage-sized. I can’t think there’s a woman in the world that wouldn’t be able to fit her daily necessities in the Trudy, no matter how heavy-handed her purse packing approach may be. It’s a good thing the thick double straps are wide enough to comfortably carry for the long haul, plus there’s a detachable shoulder strap, just in case.

It’s the design of the Trudy that makes it really special, though. It’s a tote, but it’s slouchy and stylish in a motorcycle chic sort of way. The double zipper trim reinforces the style, and enhances the bag’s inherent edginess. Prepare for this bag to become an instant classic. And at $875, it’s one that’s going to go really fast.

To be honest, I’ve never really thought much of Giueseppe Zanotti as a designer. His work is expensive and trendy, and not always terribly original. But this suede clutch is making me think differently, because it has a sophisticated style all its own.

The best thing about this bag is that it has a lot of bling, but it can be kept hidden for low key occasions. The rich matte black suede surface of the bag is almost entirely free of embellishment, save some quality seam details and tiny gunmetal studs. Until you look closely, that is, because the sides unzip to reveal sparkly dark turqouise rhinestones. I love the option of being able to control how much flash you’re flashing.

The shape of the bag is totally chic. The rectangular pouch shape is modern, and will go with anything. The rounded edge of the foldover flap softens up the look a little bit, and the teeny double stud closure is a great minimal touch.

This is a great bag, but the $1,025 price tag leaves a little to be desired. The design works to convince me that Zanotti might be coming into his own as a designer, but he certainly hasn’t changed his approach to pricing.

It seems like everyone has an iPhone these days. Even Blackberry diehards are being seduced by Apple’s array of Apps. And there’s no shortage of cases for them, either. They range from hard rubber casings that make the iPhone look like a mini-Hummer to sparkly, rhinestone-encrusted princess cases. An elegant in-between is remarkably hard to find, but this gorgeous crocodile case by Nancy Gonzalez sure does the trick.

This is not one of those cases that allows you to use the phone while it’s still inside. This is a sleeve. As far as protection goes, that leaves a little to be desired because surely accidents happen while you’re actually using the phone, don’t they?

From a design perspective, however, the sleeve-style case is pretty much ideal, because you get to show off your fabulous crocodile case and then, once you remove the phone, you get to show off the fabulous design of the iPhone.

You really can’t get more decadent than the combination of crocodile and iPhone. This case fits it snugly, and will keep it from banging around in your purse, but it also doesn’t obscure the design of the phone itself. For $325, this is an expensive little accessory, and not one most people are likely to buy for themselves. But it would make a pretty perfect holiday gift. Hint hint.
