I have been absolutely converted by Tory Burch in the past few seasons. Her posh uptown aesthetic doesn’t always appeal to monochromatic downtown types like me, but lately she’s really taken a walk on the wild side. Unfortunately, this Reva clutch is a bit of a disappointment. Not only has she abandoned her new found edginess, but all her everyday elegance seems to have gone right along with it.

The super hot fuchsia satin is extra eye-catching and extra sleek. The problem is that the color is really all there is to the bag. Except the giant logo, of course, which I find more than a little irritating. Frankly, this looks like a cosmetic bag. And not one that you’d blow $295 on, either; one that would come free with the purchase of a moderately expensive bottle of perfume.

The shape is simple and minimal, which in this case, just doesn’t work. It might if it weren’t for the large size of the logo, which weighs down the light, delicate fabric and also the overall look of the bag. Sorry Ms. Burch, I’ve been on your side for a while now, but this Reva clutch is a watered-down, over-priced version of your better work. Better luck next time.

Usually, my favorite thing about Burberry is its Prorsum line. Its standard collection is just a little stodgy and British for my taste. But this studded plisse tote is making me totally reconsider, with its cutting edge elegance.

The treatment on this black leather is fantastically detailed and textured. It has been pleated and plissed, which means that it has been treated with sodium hydroxide, which creates the fabulous puckering. The subtle and well-placed studding adds extra edginess and a bit of glimmer. The smooth leather handles and sides are sleek and durable touches.

The intriguing shape of this bag is greatly enhanced by the plisse treatment. There is simply nothing else that creates this kind of soft, linear pattern. It almost has the feel of a bowling bag with a feminine touch, and the size is such that it will accommodate a plethora of personal items without becoming terribly unwieldy.

This is a seriously chic designer bag, and while it isn’t a steal at $1,495, it’s not a robbery either.

Christian Dior has pulled out all the stops for its final installment of the Lady Dior short film trilogy.

Marion Cotillard, in the title role, plays a burlesque dancer trapped naked inside an hourglass. Clearly such a vision is enough to turn a gay man straight, as she seduces a wheelchair bound Sir Ian McKellen who doesn’t seem to mind her affections one iota!

The colorful short film is the work of flamboyant director John Cameron Mitchell, who first hit the mainstream with his transsexual musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He’s definitely made this short film entertaining, even if it is a wee bit confusing.

You don’t have to be a film scholar to appreciate it though. With plenty of sparkly Dior accessories, including the iconic handbag that shares its name, it’s a visual feast for fashionistas.

I’ve really enjoyed this movie series as a unique advertising technique, and I’m sorry to see it over. Which Lady Dior film was your favorite?

Bourne gives us a thrill, and more than a few frills, with this Katherine Clutch.

This is a purse for black tie galas and high class soirees. It’s intended to impress, with its rows of ruffles and glittering display of diamantes. Even if you’re not typically a girly girl, it’s the kind of purse you’d carry on a special evening when you’ve been convinced to ditch the pants.

I know they add the prerequisite amount of glitz, but I’m not entirely behind the row of diamantes. They abruptly interrupt the frills, and I think I’d prefer they were ditched altogether. But this is an evening bag designed to turn heads, so there they are.

Speaking of turning heads, I think this blue iris shade is the way to do it. It’s neutral but more unexpected than basic black. That’s an option too though, along with a mushroomy shade called truffle.

After all the excitement up front, I’m disappointed by the back of the purse. It’s bare and frankly boring. I suppose Bourne had to cut a few corners to keep this clutch priced at $174.95. That bottom line is nothing to sneeze at, but in the world of posh evening bags it’s almost a steal.

Jewelry designer Judith Ripka is spreading her wings into the world of handbag design with the launch of her first collection for QVC. The new line will make its debut today.

The range features a purse for every occasion, from large totes, hobos, and shoulder bags for daytime use to the smaller evening clutch purses.

The released image doesn’t really inspire me, as the material seems cheap and the design uninspired, but I’ll reserve my judgment until I see the rest of the collection. I won’t hold my breath though. Surely the very best designs are leaked to the media, right?

At any rate, at least the bags are affordable, with prices starting at $99 for the wallets and reaching up to $350 for the most lavish handbags. Do you think Judith Ripka has what it takes to stamp her mark on the world of handbags, or is this just another example of a designer that should stick with what she knows?

Bottega Veneta cuts loose with this multicolor shoulder bag.

The woven finish we’ve come to know and love is used more sparingly than usual here. Rather than an all-over weave, Bottega Veneta uses woven stripes to accentuate the shoulder bag’s checkered print. Those checks in graduated shades of teal and green give this handbag a real warm weather appeal, which is ideal with spring approaching!

I’m not sure how versatile those cheery colors will be, but at least this bag will be different to the ones you’ve already got in your closet. If you’ve got a lot of white in there too, it’ll work perfectly though.

I like the way that Bottega Veneta picks up the teal again in the braided shoulder straps. This strap is so thick and rope-like, I’m sure it’s up to the task of carrying around all your essentials, and some luxuries beside! The dimensions of this shoulder bag are generous too, so you won’t need to worry about leaving anything behind.

As with most Bottega Veneta handbags though, the price is the kicker. At a whopping $3300, this bag is the kind of thing I’ll have to admire from afar.

A purse from Timmy Woods that isn’t shaped like an animal or a famous landmark? Remarkable! The novelty handbag specialist has abandoned her somewhat crazy roots with this design, although she definitely still achieves a modicum of ridiculousness!

The wooden base for this scrolled clutch makes for a luxury handbag that is wonderful to hold. Solid, secure and consequently well-crafted, it has enough personality to put many boring bags to shame, and this is always going to be the main selling point. Of course, the hard wood does mean you don’t get any size flexibility, so make sure to pack lightly or resign yourself to carrying stuff in your pockets.

From a party point of view, there is one other hesitation about the Chinois clutch. The combination of gold, silver and white may be difficult to wear! On the other hand, however, this controversial selection of colors may be the very reason you love it, because you dare to break the conventions of color pairing.

This is a fun novelty purse with a certain regal attitude.

Botkier has an uncanny knack for creating luxurious purses for far less than its contemporaries. A buttery soft lambskin tote like this Gene would easily top four figures if it came from a European design house, but Botkier has priced it as a reasonable $395.

The appeal of this tote goes beyond its bottom line. Its lambskin finish is truly stunning, and sumptuously soft. I like the traditional pebbled surface we see on this stone bag, but it’s also available in a delicate snake print.

Gorgeous leather like this needs little to spice it up, so Botkier leaves the front mercifully bare. It’s put some convenient slip pockets in the sides though, which have press-stud snaps running down the sides. These silvery circles work as an interesting alternative to studs, but their appeal doesn’t really go beyond the aesthetic. Who wants to open up the sides of their pockets after all?

These snaps extend down along the bottom of the tote, offering a little protection for that gorgeous leather base. It’s a smart design decision, especially for the stone leather bag which could easily show stains otherwise.

While the exterior has impressed me, inside the Gene leaves a bit to be desired. It’s enormous, but sadly Botkier has only offered a single zip pocket. I suppose we can use the unsecured side pockets for small items we feel will go astray, but I still expect a few vital possessions to become lost in the corners! Bags this big really are like black holes after all!

So long as you know how to stay organized, this Gene bag will serve you well for many seasons to come.

Online handbag retailer Handbago.com has announced the winners of its annual Handbago Awards. Adriana Castro took out the top honor for best handbag designer.

“Every year there is a handbag designer that stands out above the rest. This year it is Adriana Castro,” explained Handbago.com’s president, Kristina Moreno. “Castro brings luxury, bold yet classic designs and high end quality to the table. Her designs excite the senses of consumers and celebrities alike.“

But there were plenty of other awards on the night. Hermes Birkin took out a hotly contested best timeless classic award, beating out stiff competition from Chanel’s 2.55 Quilted Bag by a single vote. Lena Erziak proved she’s one to watch, taking out best emerging designer.

The Cashhimi Yellow Python Clutch, Treesje Crimson Crossbody, Linea Pelle Perry Woven Tote, and Nyla Noor Port Vell Satchel all won their individual bag type categories. The Jimmy Choo Tatum also took home an award for best It bag.

Hermes Birkin Handbags on eBay

I’m used to seeing wild and wacky purses from Bodhi, so I was surprised to see the label playing it safe with this Moon Clutch.

That traditional approach may disappoint some of the label’s fans, but I think it’s also likely to attract some new ones. The sexy, simple curves are complemented by matching seams. I generally find name plates jarring, but this one adds some interest to the classic pebbled leather.

The slender design makes this Moon Clutch very elegant, but I’m not sure it’s all that practical. Once you try to load it up it’s bound to show lumps and bumps. It’ll take some serious skill to pack this purse and maintain those clean, smooth lines. If you don’t mind about that so much you’ll find the space generous enough for holding everything you need on a big night out, and an extra tube of lipstick.

The lack of shoulder strap is disappointing, particularly for a purse costing $318. But it is a lovely looking thing, which might be just enough to tempt you to overlook those practical concerns.
