Blake Lively is reportedly the new face of Chanel handbags. While there’s been no official confirmation from the French fashion house yet, E! Online reports the Gossip Girl star recently shot the advertisements in Paris. The gossip site also claims we’ll see the commercials early next year.

Blake Lively is certainly one of the new breed of style icons, and her presence is compelling enough to hold an advertising campaign. She’s also got all the right connections. She’s pals with Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who escorted her to the recent Chanel couture show in Paris. She met Karl Lagerfeld there, and perhaps talked business. I’m sure Wintour would have put in a good word for her too!

She’s also been a regular at Chanel fashion shows, although she doesn’t seem to turn down too many invitations so that probably doesn’t say a lot!

There’s a time and place for high fashion, but sometimes you just want to let loose with something cheap and cheerful. If you want to spice up your outfit without spending a lot of money, you could do a lot worse than this metallic foil hobo from Bisadora.

It’s vaguely crescent shaped, but this hobo has a lot more structure than we typically see in bags of this ilk. Every pleat is deliberately placed, and there’s only a hint of the slouch we’re used to. The choice of synthetic, which is admittedly a bit stiffer than we’d like, only adds to that structured look.

That metallic synthetic may be too glitzy for conservative fashionistas, but I love the playful candy pop of this purple-pink metallic. If you prefer something more traditional, look to the copper or black options.

This isn’t a very large bag by modern standards, so it’ll probably become part of your after five wardrobe. It’s not for the poshest of evening events, but I can imagine it doing the job for cocktail hour or a quick bite with your gal pals. A purse of this size doesn’t take much to stay organized, but it’s still great to see the zippered pocket for change and other small valuables.

Considering its quality it may not last more than a season or two, but you’ll definitely get your money’s worth. This Bisadora hobo is only $49 after all!

I have to admit that I’ve never really been a big fan of Michael Kors. I’ve always felt like his designs were a little trendy and boring, but this season he’s totally changed my mind. This fabulous Skorpios tote is a great example of where the line seems to be headed.

The black leather on the Skorpios has an invisibly fine grain. That keeps the surface of the bag sleek, smooth, and perfect for showing off its slouchy design. The braided leather handle provides textural contrast to the body of the Skorpios, and is thick and comfortable enough to carry all day. But there is a detachable shoulder strap, as well, in case you want to fill the bag to its capacity, which is ample.

The shape of the Skorpios is truly inventive. It has a balloon-y, almost hobo-esque bottom, and is gathered in with the circular handle, by way of grommets, at the top. The gathering at the top gives a pleated effect that is big on volume. The Skorpios is a seriously chic uptown bag with enough attitude to carry you downtown, and at $995, it’s well-priced for such a stylish designer bag.

Meetings of girly features and more aggressive touches are all the rage in fashion at the moment. You know: combining lace with leather, or bows with denim. The Hype interpretation of this trend is this Christy tote, which matches cute gathered ruffles with aggressive studded pockets.

The effect, generally, is quite positive. Because of the bright red leather this is an obvious bag anyway, and that means that the somewhat over-the-top nature of the gold studs and ruffles manages to work. Big Buddha has an uncanny knack for creating contemporary styled accessories for far less than the big boys. This Carrie hobo is another gorgeous option from the affordable American brand.

It’s all too easy to point to the use of synthetic, rather than real leather, for the reason for the label’s low prices. Big Buddha calls it vegan leather, one of those modern buzz words designed to appeal to eco-friendly fashionistas, but it’s still synthetic no matter which way you cut it. The difference for me is that Big Buddha uses a man made material that’s of such great quality, you might not know it’s not leather if it wasn’t pointed out to you. When superior fabrics like this are used, I don’t feel that familiar old synthetic cringe.

This buttery skin is jazzed up with chains and whipstitching around the corners. They give this slouchy purse a bit more structure, while also adding just a hint of edge. The accent isn’t outrageous, but it is a lot of fun.

This is an enormous hobo, but with plenty of pockets inside and out it doesn’t feel nearly as big as it might have. A zippered pocket on the back is great for storing the items you need at your fingertips, while the pairs of zip and slip pockets inside should help you stay organized.

I like the subtle mottled tones of this green bag, but the Carrie is also available in black, gray and pinky shade of red.

With the Kat’s Eye hobo, Betsey Johnson delivers just the kind of purse her fans love. It’s glitzy, gaudy, and more than a little bit kitsch. It’s not likely to impress fashion snobs, but it doesn’t want to. Betsey Johnson knows her fan base, and she caters to their every whim and fancy here.

It’s easy to pick apart this purse. The black leatherette is so shiny that it looks cheap, and the studs clash against the leopard spots, but so what? It demands attention, and if it has to cut a few corners to keep the price under $100 so be it.

Betsey Johnson doesn’t skimp where it counts though. This hobo is enormous, but it’s got enough pockets to ensure it doesn’t feel unmanageable. The shoulder straps are long to help you grab and go, and they’re jazzed up with fun zippers on the sides.
