Just when I thought I couldn’t stomach another studded bag, Calvin Klein’s come up with the On the Dot hobo to change my mind.

The keys here are restraint and originality. Rather than covering the purse in metal, Calvin Klein gives us two trails of silver down the sides. Studs alternate with grommets to create a look that’s playful and modern. I’m as shocked as you that Calvin Klein has made studs appear contemporary when the fashion is on its way out!

The metal helps to add structure to this soft leather bag. It’s every bit as slouchy as we’d hope a hobo to be, but its platform base and reinforced sides help it stand up. That should make the On the Dot much more user-friendly than your average hippy hobo.

The choice of shoulder and cross-body straps is welcome but not unusual. What’s more intriguing is that both straps are removable, so you can enjoy a clean look no matter what mode you’re carrying it.

Calvin Klein’s also gone above and beyond inside. This isn’t the largest hobo I’ve seen, but it has a whopping four open pockets inside. There’s also a zippered pocket too, so you needn’t worry about your valuables going astray.

At $278, this On the Dot hobo is well priced for a bag you’ll happily carry all year round.

The Marc Jacobs collection is infinitely full of enviable objects. His uniquely American design sensibility has converted women around the world. Unfortunately, this Jeannie tweed clutch isn’t his best work.

The multicolored tweed is interesting, but not so interesting that I’d want a whole bag covered in it. Especially when you add two colors of leather and a bunch of sparkly round cabochons. It’s just a little too busy. I mean I understand the impulse to make tweed more interesting, but this is taking things a bit far.

The simple, equestrian-inspired design would be amazing with a less busy treatment. The saddle-shaped bag has a fabulously tooled front flap. I love the combination of camel and chocolate leathers and the classy d-ring detail. Unfortunately, the Jeannie just doesn’t hang together well enough to warrant the $995 price tag.

Sarah Jessica Parker, despite having many naysayers on the subject of her design skills, seems to be doing a masterful job with the Halston Heritage line. This metallic cotton tote is a great example of her simple, but glamorous, design aesthetic.

The sprayed metallic treatment on this cotton tote is gorgeous. It manages to be both low key and shiny at the same time. It has an understated glamour that would be equally at home on the beach and on the city streets. Although I’m never a fan of logos, the large embossed Halston H melds seamlessly with the design of the bag.

Halston’s take on “medium” is pretty generous. I’d say that, for a minimalist like me, this would make a great overnight bag, and it would definitely be sufficient for a day’s worth of errands.

The front zippered pocket provides easy access to keys and money, while the fully zippered top is a safe space to carry more ample items. The detachable shoulder strap ensures that, no matter how full you fill the tote, it will be comfortable to carry.

At $225, this is a fabulously designed tote for the money.

Louis Vuitton is celebrating Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights. It might seem like a strange fit for the French fashion house, but the label says it shares India’s respect for tradition and enthusiasm for innovation. It’s also had a special relationship with the country for almost 100 years.

Louis Vuitton plans to decorate its stores around the world with Indian motifs to commemorate the festival. It has also commissioned Indian craftsman to weave two limited edition Louis Vuitton fabrics. The cloths will feature Louis Vuitton’s signature monogram flowers alongside traditional Indian accents. We’ll see the materials used in limited edition dresses and accessories.

Look for the Diwali decorations in Louis Vuitton stores until the end of the year. If you’re tempted to make a purchase you can look forward to some special limited edition packaging, which also features Indian style motifs.

Burberry has decided to have some fun with its traditional plaid print with this Mini Haymarket Splash Studded Sling Bag.

That name is an awful mouthful, so let me break it down for you. Haymarket is that classic Burberry check we’ve all come to know and love. This time around Burberry has given it a splash of blue color, almost as if it decided to throw some paint or ink around! The splattering gives this purse a little more whimsy than the typical Burberry bag, which I find really endearing. Purists may disagree though!

We all know about studs, and we see them here in the corners of the purse and again on the handles. Personally I think this is overkill. The splashes of blue already made an impact; this hardware simply makes this small bag seem cluttered. And we all know studs are on the way out, so why Burberry chose to add them in such an unimaginative way I’ll never know.

The mini of course refers to that petite stature we’ve already alluded to. If you’ve got a busy day running errands or hitting the mall you’ll find such a small purse liberating, but if you need to carry some serious swag you might need to give this bag a miss.

The Mini Haymarket Splash Studded Sling Bag has its good points and its bad points. Whether you’re willing to fork out $595 for it probably depends on your dedication to Burberry. Despite my love for the Haymarket Splash material, I just can’t see real value here.

It’s the unexpected design turns of this elegant Bulgari Twist shoulder bag that make it so appealing.

The Twist gets its name from the gently contorted accents on the front. They’re almost like pleats, but something else. A twist in approach to be sure! Those details are what saves this bag from being boring, but they never go so far as to appear over the top. That makes the Twist the kind of purse you could literally take anywhere and never seem out of place.

The twists are what makes it special, but it’s important not to overlook any of this Bulgari bag’s other attributes. The black calf leather is of excellent quality, as we’d expect from the brand, supple and softly grained. The metal coin accents point to the label’s heritage in an elegant, understated way. And that’s all before we even get inside.

There you won’t be disappointed either, with zip and slip compartments complementing the ones hidden away at the sides. This is a purse that can easily stay organized, which is a very good thing if you’re planning on using it day and night.

As with most Bulgari bags though, the price is what makes me pause. The label has shown some real ingenuity here, but I’m not sure it’s shown enough to command $2300.

Anya Hindmarch is a relatively new designer, and as such she has been kind of inconsistent. Her designs have run the gamut from urban perfection to overly designed, over-frilled confections, but what she’s really good at is making simple, downtown basics like this one. The Keaton is exactly the kind of bag that brought her name into the limelight.

The buffed and textured navy leather on this bag is understated and ideal for pairing with a lot of different daytime styles. The black and pale gold clasp is really interesting, a little work of art its on. It integrates perfectly with the rest of the bag, and creates a centerpiece to the geometric seam patterns.

The petite size if this bag is a breath of fresh air in a world of over-sized totes. I’m tired of seeing women weighed down by their belongings. I’d much rather see them flitting about with this sassy little number slung across their body.

Even though I love the small size, it is a little limiting. Which would be fine, I think, if the bag didn’t come with a $595 price tag. It’s just a little much for a bag that’s not so much.

Valentino’s been the king of chic Italian design for decades, and while the line has suffered ups and downs since his retirement, it seems to be on the upswing. This studded leather bag is a fabulous example of Valentino’s classy take on edgy downtown style.

The pale nude color of this tote is pitch perfect. It strikes absolutely the right balance of trendiness and timelessness. The evenly-spaced gold pyramid studs turn the bag into a soft spoken, motorcycle-inspired masterpiece. Even the buckle fastening at the front is embellished with studs, which adds to the bag’s dramatic flair.

The heavyweight leather of the bag has been tooled into a softly rounded rectangle. The only thing missing, as far as I’m concerned, is a full top zipper. It would improve the security and the practicality of the bag. Otherwise, this trendsetting handbag will make a beautiful, versatile addition to your wardrobe, even if it is a little expensive at $1,595.

Bulga shows us that boho style can be sophisticated with this Drape Hobo bag.

It’s very easy for bohemian styled purses to get a little bit too relaxed, but Bulga dresses things up with that delicious creamy green toned leather. This buttery soft material has all the slouch we crave without it becoming slovenly. The tasseled zipper pull adds that final piece of boho style, but this stops short of becoming a real flower power accessory.

With their relaxed shape hobos can be difficult to manage, but Bulga’s made sure the Drape is very user-friendly. There are three main compartments, so there’s no excuse for your goodies getting out of order! They’re all secured with zips and lined with a fun, patterned signature fabric. You’ll want to stash your small items in the middle compartment, which has three pockets in its walls.

The strap is the clincher for me. It’s so luxuriously soft and padded, I expect carrying this hobo to be heavenly. Even when it’s loaded up I don’t think your shoulder will feel the strain.

Considering the seamless way Bulga has married style and substance, I think the Drape’s price of $640 is very reasonable.
