So, as already established, this main body of this Violet clutch is a metallic rainbow of colors on a textured leather-esque fabric. That shimmering glamor is contrasted by that uneven pitch black lattice work, which manages to make the color brighter and this whole purse a whole bunch more dramatic.

Outside of the looks, this dramatic clutch is super slender. The lines are consequently gorgeous, but not so great if you have a chunky cell phone! Still, for an evening bag practicality generally has to take a back seat, and the looks are remarkable enough to make that an acceptable loss!

Proenza Schouler’s PS1 bag was instantly a success. The minimal, classic style has been drawing followers since its release in 2008, and it’s changed very little since then. The PS1 has henceforth been available in very neutral colors and materials, until now. The minimal style looks amazing in eye-popping purple.

The brightly-hued leather is so soft and supple that it looks and feels almost like nubuck. The tone alone will make a dramatic statement against a monochromatic wardrobe, but the simple style won’t overshadow your own personal look.

This utilitarian style is practically designed. The front pouch pocket provides easy access to often-needed items like keys and subway cards, and the main compartment is big enough for a decent haul, but not so large as to become uncomfortable. The front flap and straps keep both pockets safely protected, and the multiple straps give you the option of hand carrying, wearing it cross body, or throwing it over your shoulder.

At $1,595, the PS1 is an investment bag that has already found a cult following, and will inevitably continue to do so.

The electric blue-purple leather of this Orlov tote drew me in, but has Celine put enough substance behind that shocking shade to really impress?

There’s a lot to like about this tote. The simple shape with its seam details is clean and classic. It’s the sort of style that will work season after season, day or night, at a formal business meeting or a casual lunch with friends.

Celine calls it a small tote, which makes me wonder how enormous its “large bags” are! You’ll comfortably fit a modern laptop inside, which makes me think it’s somewhere between a medium and large handbag. The interior has an accordion style structure with several compartments and pockets designed to keep all your swag in order.

The handles are a disappointment though. They’re robust, but too small to comfortably fit over your shoulder, which could make carrying awkward once the Orlov is loaded up. It’s my only concern, but combined with the $1275 price tag it’s enough to make me hesitate. For that price I don’t expect niggling issues, no matter how lovely a package they come in.

Jendarling has carved out a niche as one of the few creators of organic garment bags. The eco-conscious label recently added a fun new Chelsea Girl collection to its range, just in time for holiday travel.

Jendarling looks to eliminate plastic, so it makes all its bags from breathable cotton. Happily that eco-friendly approach also makes your suits and coats less likely to develop mold when they’re packed away in dark closets. The label also uses textile waste during the manufacture of its garment bags, and supports fair trade programs.

CC Skye gives the hobo a sexy, serpentine makeover with this Blake bag.

The traditional crescent shape of the hobo is abandoned for a much larger, curved design. There’s still a hint of the slouch that we expect from a hobo, but it’s not as relaxed as many bags of this ilk. Personally I think that’s a good thing. The smooth surface helps us fully appreciate the scaly snake pattern printed on the leather.

This exotic mottled pattern won’t be to everyone’s taste, but personally I think it helps liven up such a large expanse of leather. If you disagree though you can always opt for the Blake in matte taupe or a more subtle black python.

Pop open the top snap and you’ll find a pretty pale pink lined interior. This synthetic lining is a bit cheap, but soft and feminine. A leather trimmed zipper pocket in one wall is designed to securely hold valuables, while two open pouches in the opposite wall can take care of small gadgets.

If you can’t afford a real snakeskin purse, this CC Skye hobo is a great option at $495.

Nowadays though, we can easily spend hundreds or even thousands with just the swipe of a card. Spending a hundred dollars feels just the same as spending one, and therein lies the problem.

This is new technology so it’s not available in stores yet, but hopefully a fashion house develops it soon!

We’ve drooled over Carlos Falchi’s stunning python and ostrich purses from afar for many years, but now the designer’s offering a bag we can all afford. The problem is, I’m just not sure that I want to.

Carlos Falchi flirted with affordability with his line for Target, but this microfiber tote is sold under his own premium brand. It doesn’t seem like it really deserves to be there though. The exotics we knew and loved are gone, replaced instead by a leopard printed microfiber material. Microfiber is of course simply a fancy way of saying PVC. It’s softer than many PVC materials, but it’s still a pretty cheap material.

The chocolate brown animal spots glimmer and gleam in the light. I don’t mind the metallic finish as a novelty, but it’s not very elegant. Betsey Johnson enthusiasts will likely lap it up, but I can’t imagine it finding favor with many Carlos Falchi fans.

Once you get over the jarring shock of the exterior though, it’s not a badly designed shopper. It seems Carlos Falchi and I have different ways of describing size, as this bag’s much larger than I’d expect of a medium bag. But thankfully it’s got plenty of features to make it feel manageable, including pockets and pen holders.

But let’s face it; when it comes to handbags, nobody believes that it’s what’s inside that counts. That’s especially true when a designer charges $220 for said bag. That’s cheap for a Carlos Falchi accessory, but very expensive for a bag made from PVC.

We’ve all heard that around 100 billion plastic grocery bags find their way into landfill each year in America alone. Many of us try to help out by carrying reusable totes, but Sheila Odessey has gone the extra mile.

This self-confessed scavenger turns discarded plastic bags into chic satchels, purses, and clutch bags. Looking at these elegant accessories, it’s hard to believe that they came from the trash!

“It costs more money to recycle a bag than to produce one, so there is no financial incentive to repurposing plastic,” Odessey explained. “My solution: turn this trash into trendy textiles.“

Odessey weaves strips of plastic bag into a material resembling raffia using a vintage loom. This traditional weaving process helps to mask the cheap materials she works with, but Odessey says she doesn’t try to hide each purse’s origins. One of her clutches even cheekily reads “this bag is not a toy.” How cute!

Sheila Odessey purses are a bit expensive considering their recycled materials, with prices starting from $170. However I suppose we’re paying for that painstaking handiwork, not to mention the green credentials. They’re available online from the Sheila Odessey website.

Oh Carlo Fellini. You do know how to make me swoon with purses like this Anai clutch.

The combination of black floral lace overlaid against the warm yellow satin is simply stunning. I love the way the dark roses pop against their cheery background, and sparkle with just a hint of sequins. The combination is dramatic, and much more modern than florals tend to be.

This contemporary rose pattern is paired with a classic kiss-lock clutch. The combination of old meets new could seem confused, but Carlo Fellini knew what he was doing here. Thankfully that skilful design is more than skin deep.

We needn’t spend all night clutching this purse with a choice of two attachable chains. The short one drapes over the wrist, while the longer strap would suit over-the-shoulder toting. This purse is also larger than the average clutch, so you should be able to sneak an extra tube of gloss inside. That size makes the lack of pockets a bit disappointing, but it’s not a deal breaker for me.

I was already smitten but when I saw the price tag of just $54.99 I fell a little deeper. It’s rare to find an evening purse this beautiful under $100, and even rarer when it’s practical to boot!

A vintage Hermes Birkin bag broke records recently when it became the most expensive handbag ever sold through London auction house, Christie’s.

The 1998 Rouge Moyen Birkin, made from alligator skin, was sold for a staggering £49, 000.

That’s a significant increase from the Birkins’ recommended retail prices, which average between $9000 and $15, 000. Most handbags decrease in value once they leave the shop floor, but the Birkins happily buck the trends.

“They’re more comparable to collectable works of art. We are talking about the absolute ¬pinnacle of heritage luxury,” Rebecca Lowthorpe, UK Elle magazine’s fashion features director, told The Daily Mail.

“The animals from which they get the skins are virtually made by Hermès! There are no machines in the production process, so we’re talking about tradesmen with 30 years of experience in the Hermes workshop, making one bag from start to finish.“

You’ve got to wonder about the kind of person that spends that kind of money on a used handbag. But then again, a Birkin is no ordinary bag!
