Spring and summer styles are, like the warmer weather, slowly drifting in. Jimmy Choo’s preppy sophistication looks perfect on this pastel pink leather version of the edgy Bree bag.

Pastels seem to be making a comeback this season. I guess I shouldn’t really be surprised. Where neons go, pastels are sure to follow. The delicate color of this bag is interesting because the Bree is such a tough-looking urban style. The pink gives it an ultra-feminine look that might work for you even if you’re not a girly girl.

The Bree design is one that I have always loved. It’s a very structured hobo with a lot of straps and buckles to offset what could be a very casual design. The prevalence of gold hardware keeps the look warm and inviting, and the snakeskin trim adds a touch of exotic opulence.

At $1,495, the Bree is an expensive investment, and one that might be questionable if you don’t love pastels. But it’s got a lot of style for a girl who wants a bag with a good balance between pretty and edgy.

When I first found out about Reed Krakoff’s new line, I honestly wasn’t expecting much. Yes, I know that I’m the only one, but I’m just not that big a fan of Coach, and I sort of imagined a line full of brown, logo-covered bags. I was wrong, and the Grommet Cadet II is a good example of how Krakoff has brought a pared down and very sophisticated sensibility to his new line.

Chalk white leather automatically makes me think of Easter. Perhaps it’s because my Easter shoes as a child were inevitably chalk white at the beginning of the day and some splattery combination of grass stains and egg dye by the end. Unless you live in a vacuum, you might have a hard time keeping this very smooth white leather clean, but honestly, I think it would look great with a few nicks and scrapes, anyhow. Like my Easter shoes.

The Cadet shape has been a major winner this season. It has some of the slouchiness of a hobo, but unlike more boho styles, it’s not lacking in structure. The combination of stark white with this casually chic shape is irresistible. This will be an amazing accent piece to a summer dress, or even a great way to add contrast to an all-black wardrobe like mine.

All the strap and buckle details are perfectly placed on the Cadet, as is the price at a very reasonable $990. Boy, was I wrong about you, Mr. Krakoff.

Coral was THE big color of last season, but has rather been ignored in the current catwalks. It is a shame, as this color is unusual and dramatic, and actually this Gorjana clutch would work well with all the new trends.

Those trends include brocade, and other luxury themes. The quilted front section of this coral red clutch helps the luxe looks, and the cute gold pin head studding just completes the appearance of class.

Interestingly, despite the top-draw style and lovely soft leather, the price isn’t as expensive as you would expect. In fact, the Hudson costs just $84. Reasonable, would you not agree?

Unlike many clutches, this studded purse doesn’t offer a shoulder strap. Instead, the designer has offered an unusual strap on the back, the perfect way to “clutch” it securely. It’s interesting, but it isn’t as convenient, considering the large size and potential heaviness of this purse!

Gucci is back this season in a major way. Only it doesn’t seem to have some new revolutionary design sense. Actually, it seems like a replay of greatest hits from its glory days as a conservative luxury icon. This GG Running tote is perfectly chic, but a little on the ho-hum side.

The super smooth texture of the black leather on the GG Running tote screams “old lady” to me. Actually, it’s the smoothness of the leather contrasted with the prominent stitching that really does it. This is not necessarily a bad thing. If you have quirky preppy taste, or a penchant for vintage styles, this bag could really work out for you in a major way.

The shape is also very retro. Actually, when you say “handbag,” this shape is the shape that I think of. It’s the shape of every bag my grandmother has owned since 1953, I think. The belted closure adds another dose of vintage flair, although flair may not be the right word. It’s more like a teeny tiny flourish with an oversized logo that lets you know the pedigree.

Everything about this bag is classic, including the $1,780 price tag. While it may not look like the most modern accessory, it has a certain je ne sais quoi that is really appealing.

Christian Louboutin has recently added a host of edgy design elements to its normally smooth and sophisticated line. I’ve mostly been a fan of these additions, but this new snake print version of the Morrigan leaves a little to be desired in terms of style.

The snake print on the Morrigan is only okay. Actually, I quite like the pale, grayish color scheme, but the patterning is a little off. It almost looks like a cross between snakeprint and leopard print, and it’s all a little confusing to take in when you add in the rest of the details of the bag, like the studs, which on black leather look fabulous, but seem a little incongruous here.

I love the simple shape of the Morrigan, but again, there seems to be something distorting it. The stud strip that trims the sides and bottom of the bag doesn’t look like it’s adhering quite right, and the strip lifts up off of the bag in a way that looks sloppy and cheap.

Frankly, I expect a higher attention to detail from Louboutin, or on any bag that costs $1,295. Skip this one, ladies; the black leather version is way cooler.

I don’t know about you, but I could do with some spring sunshine in my life. What better color to do it with than yellow, and what happier flower is there than the sunflower?

Dooney & Bourke has, therefore, managed to produce the perfect tote bag for unhappy girls everywhere. One glance at the Sunflower Lee design will brighten up your day, and although the color may be a little obvious for some people’s tastes (and some people’s work places) I am willing to guess that far more people will think its arty print absolutely adorable. In my humble opinion, this is one of Dooney & Bourke’s smartest printed bags.

With a design this bold, the rest of the bag needs to be simple. For this the designers have stuck with their reliable North/South tote shape, trimmed in pale and tan leather. The materials are quality and smart, and the shape is nicely functional. There’s not much to report, but not much to complain about either.

With a reasonable price tag of $158 this cheerful tote should brighten up even the grayest day.

All too often Boston bags are traditional and, well frankly, a little bit boring. But I’m still not sure Nicole Lee had to travel so far in the other direction with this Zahara bag!

Nicole Lee calls this a military style handbag, but I’m pretty sure this Boston would stand out like a sore thumb amongst the army ranks. Perhaps Nicole Lee is referring to that regimented tassel when she makes the military reference, but I can’t be sure. There’s so much going on here that that element really gets swallowed up.

Given the busy exterior, I was surprised by Nicole Lee’s minimalist approach inside. The Zahara is an enormous bag which would have benefited from more than the wall pocket and cell phone pouch. However these compartments will do the trick for all but the most gadget-crazy girl.

While I’m griping it’d be remiss not to mention the short handles. These are standard issue for Boston bags, but most designers give us a longer, more functional strap as well. Not so here, where we’re left to struggle when the Zahara’s full to the brim.

The Zahara isn’t a perfect bag, but for the right fashionista it could make a real statement. It’ll never work as an everyday handbag, but for a little more than $100 it really doesn’t need to.

The most glamorous stars of the big and small screens turned out last night for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. While fashionistas everywhere gushed over the gowns, we were captivated by the clutches!

All eyes were on Natalie Portman, who was the hot favorite to win the best dramatic actress award for her work in Black Swan. She accepted the coveted gong in a flowing white Azarro gown, which skimmed her blooming baby bump. Her black satin Roger Vivier clutch encrusted with gold and black Swarovski crystals completed the look.

Natalie Portman may have pipped her for that best dramatic actress award, but Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence sparkled on the red carpet. Celebrity favorite Judith Leiber designer her crystal box clutch. Its large black gems popped against her vibrant pink Oscar de la Renta gown. The ensemble was one of the great fashion risks of the night, but I think it paid off.

Glee’s Lea Michele also wore Oscar de la Renta, but she showed a much more reserved side of the famed designer. She looked radiant on the red carpet in her demure silver and white dress. She paired it with a Daniel Swarovski frame clutch, a natural choice for its white satin body and silver crystals. The purse sparkled just as much as her Tiffany jewelry!

Roger Vivier Clutches on eBay

As summer approaches, we’re bound to see more and more designers trading in heavy winter materials like felt and wool for lighter ones like linen. Sometimes the results will make us crave the warm weather, while others are bound to fall flat. Sadly I think this Nancy Gonzalez tote falls into the latter category.

Here Nancy Gonzalez juxtaposes her signature crocodile skin with natural toned linen. The idea of giving a signature look a more seasonal flavor is interesting, but the execution lets it down. The sunny yellow crocodile is gorgeous, but it doesn’t really mesh with the more casual beige linen. This fabric dresses down the crocodile, which isn’t a desirable effect at this price point.

It’s a shame, because this tote is more practical than so many of Nancy Gonzalez’s designs. The oversized flap pocket works well with the open side pockets, giving us place for storing the important items we want at our fingertips. With so many pockets outside we don’t really need any inside, so this space is left clutter-free for holding large items.

This Nancy Gonzalez tote isn’t a bad bag, but it seems far too laidback for its $2850 price tag. The luxury skin explains the cost, but I’m still not buying.

October may be Breast Cancer Awareness month, but White House, Black Market wants us to remember that women are dying of this terrible disease all year round. The label has just released its Give Hope tote to raise funds for women afflicted with breast cancer.

This is one unashamedly girly little number, with its red rose design and crystal-studded satin bow. Perhaps the combination of the flower, bow, and faceted jewels is overkill, but I’m sure that many girls will lap up this brand of excess.

A portion of proceeds from these $48 tote bags will benefit Living Beyond Breast Cancer. This national non-profit group helps empower women affected by breast cancer.

It’s a great cause, so I wish White House, Black Market was more transparent about exactly how much the charity will receive. The fashion house has committed “up to $250, 000” to the altruistic organization, but that doesn’t really shed any light on what “portion of the net proceeds” will be donated. Still, at least we know that something will reach the people who need it, which is more good karma than we get from most bag purchases.
