Ducti celebrates the humble invention of duct tape with its fun range of wallets and clutches.

The label uses the sticky stuff to make its coin purses. There are accessories made entirely of duct tape for the purists, and some hybrid designs which allow the creators to push the boundaries beyond what tape can achieve.

Using duct tape is a unique gimmick which gets us all talking, but Ducti’s purses are actually pretty smart. Duct tape’s silvery finish is stylish, and the material is tough and water resistant. I can definitely imagine carrying this chic Chaparral purse out on the town, although the simply designed wallets may not suit serious shopaholics.

Every Ducti bag is handcrafted, and its creators stand behind their work. That’s why each purse comes with a Never Dies Warranty; if yours does give up the ghost Ducti will happily replace it.

Duct tape isn’t expensive, and thankfully these bags aren’t either. While you’ll pay a little more for the ones featuring leather, you can snap up the most basic model for just $11.95 from the Ducti website.

No wonder this hobo is called Natalya. She’s dramatic and oozing sex appeal, just like any good Russian spy!

This hobo doesn’t have much in common with the hippie dippy bags the flower children carry. It’s got a subtle slouch to it, but you’ll find that it in most bags using quality leather. The long, rounded shape has more in common with bucket bags than hobos too, so the name is a bit confusing.

Personally I don’t mind what a bag’s called when it looks this stylish. Tory Burch has saved its black leather from appearing bland by giving it a chic speckled finish. This deep skin makes sure its gunmetal chain accents really pop.

The Natalya is gathered around the top as if it a drawstring was at work, but it actually closes with a magnetic clasp. It’s an inspired touch, which gives us that casual look without the fuss. The snap will make it much easier to get to your phone when it rings!

Don’t be deterred by Tory Burch’s labeling of this bag as small; it’s certainly big enough to carry everything you need on a daily basis and then some. It may not fit in with the other hobos on the block, but with its own sense of style I think the Natalya’s a great buy at $550.

Budding designers are encouraged to use the Laga Handbags templates provided on the company’s website as a base, and then go crazy with the Gaga-fication. Perhaps you might like to incorporate some raw meat or an enormous egg into your design? Or perhaps not!

Like so many bagistas out there, I’ve developed an aversion to obvious branding. Yet somehow this TH logo tote from Tommy Hilfiger has broken through my defenses.

There are a few things on Tommy Hilfiger’s side here. Its TH logo is abstract and modern, so it seems more like artwork than marketing. The cut-out design is interesting too, especially in popping teal. The shade’s a wonderful contrast to the deep navy fabric, and I’m thrilled it’s been picked up in the piping.

Priced at $79 this is an affordable tote, so it probably won’t surprise you that the glossy accents are synthetic rather than real patent leather. They’re convincing enough mimics though that most of us probably won’t mind.

Tommy Hilfiger calls this a small tote, but that’s really a relative term. I can’t imagine wanting a bag much bigger than this for everyday use, and I’m sure most of you will agree with me. The handles will be a bit short for easy carrying when this tote is full, but we get an attachable strap to help us out. Using this strap makes the tote seem much more casual, but when comfort matters you won’t mind a bit.

Tommy Hilfiger hasn’t reinvented the wheel here, but I’ve got to respect the label for creating such a chic logo tote.

Bottega Veneta is the only line that can properly be called classic that makes me drool. It achieves such masterful balance in each design that, even if your style is more derby girl than uptown girl, you just can’t resist it. This intrecciato clutch is a great example of how Bottega makes traditional design look fabulous.

The black leather on this clutch is stiff enough to hold the woven pattern perfectly, but soft enough to remind you that you are carrying a fine piece of leather and not a basket. That’s my problem with most woven bags, actually; they instantly remind me of baskets. But the refined intrecciato pattern on this clutch will never be confused with folksy home decor.

The shape of this clutch, as on most BV bags, is simple and elegant. All the corners are gently rounded, which creates a smooth, refined look. There is zero extra embellishment; only the simple pewter turn lock clasp, which integrates with the minimal design perfectly.

This level of excellence doesn’t come cheap, but $520 isn’t a bad price to pay for it, either.

All told, I think that the See by Chloe line is one of the most exciting out there. Fashionistas love it for the quirky, cutting edge style and lower than usual designer prices. But it seems like this season the label’s a little off. Every bag I’ve seen has been cool, but the tiniest bit over-designed. Unfortunately, this Ring Around shoulder bag isn’t an exception.

The muted teal color of the leather on the Ring Around is very of-the-moment. Pastels are coming back, and this soft green blue is a really nice one. I love the broken-in texture and the reinforced seaming. I also really dig how the logo has been embossed subtly into the strap instead of displayed prominently.

The shape of the Ring Around is really unusual. It’s like a squared-off hobo. It has all the slouch of a hobo with none of the drawbacks. It looks neat and cohesive, and the flat bottom is better for keeping you organized than a rounded off base might be. My problem is with the weird addition of the bangle details on the sides. I don’t really think they add anything interesting to the design, and they certainly take away from its simplicity.

For $480, the Ring Around is well priced, but the tacky plastic beads just kill it for me. Chloe really had a good thing going on here; it just didn’t know when to stop.

Nancy Gonzalez really has a way with materials. All of her exotic skins come from farms that she operates in Columbia, her home. She always lets the quality of the skin shine through, and doesn’t muddy up her designs with over-embellishment. This crocodile and python bag is one of the most interesting and most luxurious bags of the season.

Pastels are coming back into vogue with a vengeance. This spring you can expect to see them everywhere. The sweet blushy pink on this bag is in itself interesting, but the amazing texture makes it even more so. The combination of python and crocodile makes for a symphony of textures and patterns that is eye-catching and unique.

The shape of the bag is nice and simple. The bucket style has a discreet and convenient drawstring closure. The upside of drawstrings is that they leave the top of the bag pretty open, so you can reach the interior of the bag with ease. The downside is that if you forget to pull the drawstring, you could end up with an overturned purse. They are also not the safest option, security-wise, if you spend a lot of time in crowded public spaces.

The bag has other practical details that make it attractive. The padded shoulder strap is going to be very comfortable for long days, and the size is manageable, but generous. At $3,350, this bag is definitely an investment, but one that will pay off over decades of use.

Well, there is certainly no debate over why this tote is named the Sunburst Hardware! Just one glance at it reveals such a concentration of metal and grommets that any other name would have been entirely inappropriate!

Considering the amount of metal bits and pieces covering the front of this tote, and the stylized sunburst design, it is surprising to note that it costs just $28.99. Sure the main material is leatherette rather than the genuine article, but you still get a lot more effort put into the looks than usual on such an affordable purse.

Of course, effort doesn’t always mean success. Some people will love the metal covered design, but others like myself will find it a little too much. Perhaps the bright contrast between the white and black is what is putting me off; it makes the design stand out so starkly that it seems a little over-dramatic. Still, with the right type of toned-down outfit this monochrome handbag could look smart.

At this price point you are unlikely to get more decoration on a tote!

Michael Kors’ MICHAEL line is really blowing me away. Sure, the line’s accessories aren’t on the absolute cutting edge of cool, but they are well-designed, well-priced, and well-crafted bags that will serve you well for several seasons. This Greenwich hobo is one of my new favorites.

The soft black leather on the Greenwich has a look that is beaten, rather than just weathered. But don’t let that appearance fool you; the reinforced corners ensure that it will be sturdy and durable. Not only that, but they give the bag a motorcycle aesthetic that is really cool.

This hobo shape is really fabulous. It’s one of my favorites, perhaps because it looks so much like my own favorite handbag, the Botkier Jaden hobo. It’s got all the curves of a hobo and some of the slouch, but it’s a little slimmer and more structured than the style is usually known for being. As far as I’m concerned, the structure makes it loads more practical, because you won’t always have to be chasing your wallet around the bottom of the bag.

The details on the Greenwich are a little cheesy, honestly. I don’t really like the toggle clasp, as it’s just a little too much to fiddle with. And the MK hanging plaque has to go. Luckily, I think it would take about a second to pry off, which at $350, I might just be willing to do.

This Zeta minaudiere may well be the most absurdly decorative purse I have ever written about!

You see all the glitter on the intricate floral metal work of this evening bag? That is all made out of Swarovski crystals. They coat pretty much the entirety of this neat little box clutch, from big crystals embedded in the chain of the strap, through to teeny tiny little crystals all over the body. Even the 3D metal rose that rises out of the metal body is covered in cute pink gems and crystals. The difference of color may make it stand out from the silver and white, but it definitely doesn’t tone down the overall impression!

Once you stop being blinded by all of that shiny metal and over-the-top bling, what Clara Kasavina has created here is actually a cute and compact purse. The florals are season appropriate, whilst the little interior gives us just enough room for our evening essentials. However, I sense that these details are going to make very little difference to the potential buyers of this luxury bag; they will want it from the moment they see how it sparkles.
