It’s been a while since I wrote about Tory Burch. I used to really dislike her aesthetic, but it’s really grown on me the past few seasons. Not only that, but she’s gotten a lot more street smart, as well, which only makes me like her more. This Amanda shoulder bag is a great example of her putting a classic spin on an exotic style.

There aren’t many lines that get faux snakeskin right. Honestly, I only really like the way Michael Kors does it. Until now. This is a great looking adaptation of snakeskin. The texture is really believable, and the black and gold combination is fabulous.

The shape of this bag is also perfectly chosen. It’s nice and small, perfect to sling over your shoulder or across the body. The pouch shape is unique, given the prevalence of boxier bags and slouchy hobos, and I like it quite a lot. Too bad they put that terribly giant logo on the front of it.

Honestly, it ruins the whole bag for me. The Amanda is just too small and well designed to be overburdened by that huge monstrosity. If it was removable, at $375, I’d say this bag was a steal. But as it stands, you couldn’t pay me to carry it.

Go all dramatic and armored with this metal mesh version of the funky Felix Rey Isabell clutch.

The quilted leather version with its big solid metal bow was, quite frankly, awesome. That makes for some really big shoes to fill, and any other Isabell versions could have trouble living up to the high expectations. However, then along came the mesh version, and any worries we may have possibly had have definitely fallen by the wayside. It is just as good, if not better!

You see, here the metal bow, that super stylized design, is teamed with yet more metal. The mesh is textured and so manages to contrast with the solid pewter, but in a powerfully edgy way. It’s less daytime retro and more of an evening look, perfect for teaming with dramatic dresses and over the top skyscraper heels.

I have to be honest; this mesh wristlet is pretty hard to slate. I keep looking for a flaw, but I can’t find one, apart from the $240 price. However, even that seems fair for the remarkable looks!

Every since the launch of Mad Men, I’ve been drooling over vintage fashions. The biggest problem for me though is that the handbags always seem so small. They hearken back to the days before cell phones and oversized wallets, a time when all a girl had to carry was her lipstick and a handkerchief. Thankfully Michael Kors has come to the rescue with the Knox, a bag that combines retro style with the modern dimensions we crave.

This purse is a real looker with its red pebbled leather exterior, sexy curved dome shape, and rolled handles. In a world of over embellished handbags its minimalist style stands out. The zippered pocket breaks up the leather, but it’s so convenient that I don’t really mind.

The attention to detail is impressive for a purse which comes from an affordable diffusion line. Michael Kors has added metal feet to protect the Knox’s platform base, and leather trim around the pockets. There’s even an extra strap to help us carry this satchel cross-body style. Honestly I can’t think of what more you’d need!

Oh yes I can; an affordable price tag. Happily Michael Kors gives us that too. The Knox is very affordable for such a well-made and stylish bag at just $328.

Swiss label Blembal has used steel to make the purses from its latest handbag line tougher than the average.

The use of high-grade chromium steel manufactured in Switzerland doesn’t just make Blembal bags strong. The label also uses the metal to create an amazing optical illusion. The light shines through the angled steel to create a dazzling visual effect. The steel is complemented by leather created in the famous German workshop, Apolda.

Blembal is an offshoot of Blechemballagenfabrik AG, a third-generation metal and packaging firm which has been a leader in Swiss industry for the last 70 years. I’ve never heard of such a masculine company diversifying into the fashion industry, but the results speak for themselves. Maybe more companies should be thinking laterally and using their products for fashion like this.

Blembel bags cost around €1000, and are available from selected European boutiques. The label is currently searching for an American distributor, as it has plans to release its bags in the States next year. American pricing hasn’t been determined yet, but considering the European prices, plus the cost of shipping, I’d start saving for these bags now!

I’m always amazed how impressive artfully arranged fabric can look. Menbur reminds us of this simple trick with its beautiful Argunova clutch.

The swath of satin which twists around the front of the purse makes its simple flap design seem so much more dramatic. Its elegance is only enhanced by the pretty pale pink hue. Menbur calls it nude, but it’s much peachier and prettier than I expect a nude to be. If it’s too feminine for your tastes you can also find the Argunova in black and pearl gray. Each shade is sophisticated and easy to incorporate into any evening wardrobe.

Inside the Argunova is every bit as basic as its traditional flap over design. There’s an interior pouch, a token gesture which won’t really help most of us stay organized. But it is spacious enough if you know how to pack it right, and we do have that simple silver chain ready when we want to go hands free.

The price is the real clincher for me though. The Argunova looks a million bucks, but it costs far less. Can you believe this beauty is just $49?

British make-up artist Pat McGrath has reunited with LeSportsac for the second year running to create a new cosmetic bag collection for Covergirl.

The eight-piece set was inspired by Covergirl’s instant classic lipcolor, LipPerfection. It was also informed by McGrath’s knowledge of the fashion industry. After working on countless runways and advertising shoots, she knows a thing or two about keeping make-up organized!

The new cosmetics purses feature some of the same organizational techniques McGrath uses on professional shoots and fashion shows, and the pretty hues of the LipPerfection lipcolors. The smallest is the Kiss Case, a $25 purse designed to hold five favored shades of Covergirl’s LipPerfection. Mellow World takes the edge off the studded trend with this Mini Pearls handbag.

Rather than metal studs, this handbag is decorated with elegant pearl-like domes in the same gentle gray as its leatherette body. They’re not quite as mini as the bag’s name suggests, and honestly I’d have preferred they were a bit more delicate. But they’re also much more ladylike than traditional studs would have been. I think that pale gray color makes this purse more sophisticated, but I know it’ll be too mellow for some tastes. Thankfully it’s also available in black, and a white bag with a rainbow of colored domes.

Whichever one you pick you’ll appreciate all the features Mellow World has packed inside. A large zippered envelope divides the interior compartment into three user-friendly sections. There’s a zippered pocket in one wall for valuables, and an assortment of slip pouches in the other for gadgets or sunglasses.

I could have done without the metal studs on the handle, but it’s not our only carrying option. If you prefer a more minimalist look just detach it and add the longer, plain shoulder strap.

This Mini Pearls bag is far less luxurious than a string of the oyster’s orbs, but at a mere $39.95 it represents real value.

Melie Bianco embraces its feminine side with this flirty Melissa hobo.

Ordinarily designers make their bags girly by covering them in sequins and bows and crafting them in sugary pink fabrics. But Melie Bianco takes a more atypical approach. This one is pink, but it’s a dusty shade that’s much subtler than a fuchsia or bubblegum hue. And if that’s too obvious for you, you can always choose the Melissa in black.

Its body is cut to resemble lace, which is ruffled in soft cascading tiers. Its polyurethane material looks a bit cheap, and of course it is. I can’t help wishing the bag was available in a skin that wasn’t so shiny or thin, but for an affordable $80 we take what we can get.

All too often girly bags are all surface, but not the Melissa. She’s luxuriously large and lined in pretty polka dotted material. The interior is kitted out with a zippered pocket and pair of drop pouches, and if you’re still looking for space to store valuables there’s a zippered pocket on the back. I’m not too sure of the look of those ruched handles, but they’re bound to be comfortable to carry.

The Melissa’s not the most luxurious bag on the block, but it makes a big style statement for just a little cash.

This delicious chocolate brown Sukey tote bag is the latest Gucci for UNICEF creation.

Gucci has supported UNICEF’s Schools for Africa project for the last seven years through the creation of limited edition handbags such as this. A percentage of handbag sales helps UNICEF provide quality education for African children in need. Since 2005, Gucci has donated more than $9 million to the project, more than any other corporate donor.

Honestly I think this Sukey handbag is one of the initiative’s best. It features the diamante motif which originated in 1935 embossed over lush brown calfskin. The hand waxing treatment makes this Sukey feel very vintage, and the delicate hardware is conservatively classic. The choice of rolled handles and longer detachable shoulder strap makes this limited edition Sukey tote as functional as it is fashionable. I don’t ordinarily warm to brown bags, but the treatment of this Sukey has me swooning. Has it won you over?

Gucci hasn’t announced how much it’ll sell this Sukey for, but we do know that a quarter of the price will benefit UNICEF. That should make it a bit easier to part with your cash when it hits Gucci stores on June 15. It’ll be available until February 28 next year, or until stocks last.

The Disco City mini bag from Foley & Corinna takes a favorite brand design (that curved handle and long shape) and applies it to a mini bag format. The result? An unusual looking purse with enough added glamour to really make an impression.

Whilst the shape looks dramatic, it also offers an unusual amount of room for a typical mini bag. The depth and the slouchy, flexible soft leather mean you can store a decent amount, and the only drawback is going to be the fact that the handle doesn’t let you carry it on your shoulder. Ah, but no worries; this is a convertible purse and as such you just flop it over and use the optional long leather strap. You lose some capacity, but for the versatility you are unlikely to complain.

And on to the looks. Well, that burnished white gold is bound to be popular, and the texture/interest is added through the gorgeous crinkled pattern. Drawing on the texture of the leather itself, this adds attitude and also a certain Grecian style that is always bound to come back into fashion.

Whilst many metallic handbags can’t really be worn during the daytime, the worn look and gentle sheen mean this is somewhat more daytime appropriate, although I doubt it will be really suitable for work. However, it is definitely casual, and with a dash of practicality it gets a thumbs up all round.

Smart, shiny and fun, this little bag has a surprising amount of things going for it.
