Maxx New York dresses up its cheap and cheerful synthetic with this Bridget shoulder bag.

The Bridget’s snake treatment really is lovely. The textured scales make the synthetic shimmer when it catches the light, but they’re not as obvious as they might have been. Something with dark mottled patterns just would have seemed busy on a purse that’s already got so much going on.

All that activity has a practical purpose. The front pockets are a bit chunky for my tastes, but it’s hard to quibble over features which serve us so well. Their curved flaps are mirrored with the larger one which protects the Bridget’s interior. This space is very generous, but its pockets ensure it stays user friendly. Each one is trimmed in more of that serpentine synthetic to make them extra strong.

The choice of straps is another real draw card. The shorter one is perfect for slinging over your arm, while the longer allows you to convert the Bridget into a shoulder bag. Honestly I think this one is much more practical, but it’s all a matter of personal preference.

Maxx New York has crammed plenty into the Bridget, but at almost $200 it still feels expensive for a synthetic bag. Do you think the label’s done enough to justify the price?

Designers like Stella McCartney and Matt & Nat can always be counted on for eco-friendly handbags, but generally green-conscious fashion fans have to wade through the offerings on shopping websites to find the ones which meet our ethical standards. New online retailer LovingEco looks to make things a bit easier when it officially launches on June 6.

LovingEco president Melinda Moore calls the website a “passion project,” which she hopes will help fashion fans become more conscious consumers. All the apparel, handbags, and accessories on the site are eco-friendly and made under fair trade conditions. There are also green beauty products, and goodies for women, babies, and children. Sorry men; maybe the website will expand to offer items for you in the future!

LovingEco isn’t only environmentally friendly; it’s also altruistic. Moore will donate 3% of the net proceeds generated to socially and environmentally concerned charities including Farm Sanctuary, Stand Up to Cancer, and Village Empowerment.

Don’t wait until the June 6 launch to check out this green fashion site though. Just when I thought studs were becoming passé, Matt & Nat come along and make the metal accents seem fresh. The restraint shown with the Cursive wallet makes me remember why we all fell in love with studs in the first place.

Far too many designers overdo studs. They cover their bags in them, large metal domes or chunky pyramid shapes dripping with attitude. Matt & Nat take a more reserved approach, smattering just a few small brass studs artfully in the center of the flap.

This flap is decorated with soft pleats which emphasize the quality of Matt & Nat’s buttery vegan leather. Fashion snobs may sneer at this ethical leather alternative, but when a material feels this good and is animal friendly I don’t think we’ve got any business complaining.

The interior is well designed, although serious shoppers may find it lacking. The clear ID window, zippered coin pouch, pair of bill pockets, and duo of gusseted pockets tick all the boxes. But there are only five credit card slots, which just isn’t enough for any self respecting girl. With most stores handing out free loyalty cards we need at least twice that to survive!

If you can get back to basics though the Cursive is a really beautiful wallet, and an affordable one at $65.

Don’t worry. This Bee Happy purse from Mary Frances is the perfect pick-me-up!

This kind of sequin covered novelty is just what Mary Frances is famous for. However I think the Bee Happy might be a step up for the brand. Its structured bee is just the kind of embellishment I can imagine adorning a high end purse, and while the sequin-covered sunflower petals make this cross-body seem a little tacky there’s a certain charm to their cheery colors.

The chain strap is another inspired touch. I appreciate that Mary Frances has adorned it with more beautiful beads and stones, but that’s not the end of its appeal. Once you detach it, it can work double duty as a necklace!

Of course, the Bee Happy purse doesn’t have a lot of space. Any larger and it’d look silly, although I wish we had the room to carry a few more items. Downsizing is the compromise you’ll have to make to carry this piece of arm candy.

Make no mistake, this is a flamboyant purse, and if you don’t have flamboyant tastes it will likely be too much for you. But doesn’t everyone need a little extravagance in their life? At $265 this purse delivers just that, without an exorbitant price tag.

We’ve got our first look at the upcoming Missoni for Target collection courtesy of some very canny paparazzi. The undercover snappers captured Margherita Missoni, the model daughter of the label’s creative director Angela Missoni, posing with a swag of the new gear.

Honestly, this is Missoni for Target overload. She’s wearing a Missoni for Target headband and Missoni for Target dress as she pulls her pile of Missoni for Target travel bags. It’s just the scene we’d expect to see on any street, right? I get the advertisement’s message, but it also seems to be an instructional guide for the wrong way to wear the capsule collection. These pieces really should be paired with neutrals, not more of the same zig zag printed items!

The photo, as seen in The Cut, shows us just five of the 400 plus items promised by Missoni for Target. But if they’re all as predictable as these ones, perhaps we can guess how they might look. Honestly anyone who knew anything about Missoni might have imagined these bags and clothes appearing just the same way, which is disappointing. There’s nothing wrong with sticking to a design vision of course, but wouldn’t you like to see a bit more individual flair?

I suppose we’ll reserve judgment until the entire Missoni capsule collection hits Target stores on September 13.

I felt a sense of déjà vu when I first clamped eyes on this Marni shopping bag. Doesn’t it look an awful lot like the Ornj Bags David Shock makes from construction fences?

Sure the color is more sedate and the materials more luxurious, but both handbags have those distinctive large perforations and playful retro feel. The Marni bag’s plush touches will draw in those with expensive tastes. The pale pink patent leather is delicately feminine, a sugary shade designed to appeal to our inner girly girl. This shopper is fully lined too, and unlike the plastic alternative it comes with a detachable pocket. Those long leather handles will also be much easier to carry than David Shock’s bamboo ones, although they don’t have quite as much personality.

I don’t think this Marni shopper is perfect though. While the lining helps us keep a little mystery, and ensures our essential items don’t fall out, it also looks a bit unsightly peeking through those holes. The drawstring will keep our items safe, but it’s also a fiddly way to offer security. A hidden zip would have been much more user-friendly and effective.

I expected to pay for the luxury materials Marni’s used here, but I didn’t expect to pay quite this much. Its $965 price tag buys us a purse with personality and high-quality craftsmanship, but not one without flaws.

Marc Jacobs is one of those rare designers that manages to turn heads no matter what he produces. Whether it’s a high-class clutch or a casual nylon shopper like this Packables bag, a Marc Jacobs creation always has that certain something.

This isn’t a piece of high-end fashion, but its quirky features help make it more than just another casual tote. The wide yellow stripes are very cheery, and they’re set off beautifully by the delicate polka-dotted trim. The embossed Marc by Marc Jacobs nameplate is a subtle way for the designer to leave his mark without detracting from the design.

This sizable shopper is simple. In fact, some might say it’s too simple. There’s no clasp at all and the Velcro pocket inside has a big job to do. This pouch is probably inadequate for all but the most organized fashionista. But Marc Jacobs hasn’t pretended this is anything but a basic bag, so perhaps we’re being a bit unfair to expect all the trimmings.

Frankly I don’t mind a bit of corner cutting when it’s priced accordingly. While other designers slap a high price tag on anything bearing their name, this Packables shopper is quite affordable at $58.

Wowsers, those are some blinding stripes! This is a handbag-meets-visual-illusion, and it manages to kind of work.

The Seersucker Vionette clutch steps away from Kate Spade’s typical retro style. Don’t get me wrong, this is still retro, but rather than paying homage to the quaint and cutsey 50s, this is edgier. More steampunk, less Little Bo Peep. It wouldn’t look at all out of place with a pair of striped punky jeans and a band shirt, yet at the same time the striped patent leather is simple enough to easily pair up with very smart work wear and tiny pinstripes.

With a bold design like this fold-over purse,  versatility is key. You can have the boldest brightest and most fabulous purse in the world, but if you can only wear it once every 25 years you probably aren’t getting your money’s worth. I may be challenged for this by pattern-clashing haters, but I actually think this leather clutch could work with plenty of different styles, albeit rarely in a subtle manner.

If spectacular monochrome is too dramatic for you then there is a softer pink and white option, but personally I think the bright contrast of this clutch is what really sets it apart from the crowd.

Maison Martin Margiela goes rustic with this Glossy Wood Grain clutch.

At first I thought this purse was made of real wood, polished within an inch of its life to create that glossy surface. However it seems the label has fooled us, opting instead to apply a wooden-like finish to methacrylate PVC. While purists may prefer the real thing, it’s actually a smart choice. Genuine wood is prone to dents and dimples in time, but methacrylate PVC is tough as nails.

I never expect practicality in structured purses like this. They typically contain a single compartment which requires careful packing to hold even the essentials. But this one has a few surprising features which make it worth another look. There’s a zippered pocket and a pair of open pouches, as well as four slots for holding four vital cards. I wouldn’t say we’ve got a lot of space to play with, but at least our items will stay organized. The only obvious omission is a shoulder strap, although with a purse as smooth as this you shouldn’t mind holding it in your hand.

You’ll want to do it often to justify the extravagance though. At $1240.99, this is Maison Martin Margiela clutch is a real investment piece.
