I’m often surprised by the styles of L.A.M.B. handbags. While I always expect them to be a little funky, sometimes they are also a fantastic combination of unique and classic. Bags like the unexpected tie-dye Galloway and the colorful Darjeeling make me take a second look at the designs of Gwen Stefani’s fashion line. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at their chic styles considering the oddly classic style of the celeb’s personal fashion sense.

The Hopewell Satchel is another example of traditional meets offbeat chic. I love the simple shape of the bag combined with the L.A.M.B. signature checkerboard print. If you look closely, you’ll notice the multitude of L’s that surround the purse from the material to the hardware. 

This satchel has some practical features, too. The PVC coated cotton and leather is fairly practical for everyday use. You’ll also find a zippered gusseted sides, and even the base unzips to create more space.

The signature L.A.M.B. striped leather strip runs down the front of the bag. The black and white blends nicely with the print. A magnetic tab closes the open top of the Hopewell while the double L-shaped magnetic closure on the front of the bag acts as pretty decorative hardware.

The interior is lined in the brand’s signature striped fabric and contains several handy pockets. Get the Hopewell satchel in checkerboard or tie-dye print like the Galloway. This L.A.M.B. handbag retails for $525.

Even our favorite designers can take a misstep. I usually love the risks that Marni takes with its bold handbag designs, but with the Jungle Bag the Italian designer misses the mark.

The cotton top features a bold African-inspired print. The green, yellow, black, and white color scheme works, but the images of natives and trees look a little messy. The base is made from woven straw, making the bag look like a half coconut shell is sitting on the bottom. I suppose it offers added durability, but these different fabrics don’t work in harmony.

The Jungle Bag has space to spare, but no organizational features to help you out. I think handbags so deep really call for inner compartments to keep everything in order. Don’t be surprised if your smaller cargo finds its way to the bottom of your purse. At least you won’t have to worry about security, with a relaxed drawstring closure working keeping things safe.

The Jungle Bag seems like it has enough space for stashing everything you want to carry, and it probably does. But if you’re looking for an everyday bag, this probably isn’t it. With no handles or straps to speak of, this isn’t a practical choice for toting about the city. But you can happily fit your towel and bathing suit inside for a trip to the beach.

Rob Marshall’s new film Nine is set to be one of the year’s most glamorous releases. It’s based on the Tony-award winning musical and boasts a star-studded cast including Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, and Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson.

So it seems fitting that designer duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are also set to appear in the fashionable film!

Dolce and Gabbana will ditch the designer gear they’re famous for to appear as modest priests. The fashionable pair was spotted shooting their cameos in Rome recently.

This isn’t the first time Dolce and Gabbana have been bitten by the acting bug. They made their film debut in 1995, appearing in Giuseppe Tornatore’s Academy-Award nominated flick L’Uomo delle stelle (The Star Maker).

But we’ll have to wait a little longer to see their latest acting turn. Nine will hit theaters across the United States on November 25.

Those of you who waited in line to see the Sex and the City gals on the big screen this past summer will be excited to hear that the fabulous four will all return for a sequel to the Hollywood hit. The good news is that we’ll get a whole new round of Patricia Field’s fashion styling. The only bad news is that we have to wait until the summer of 2010 to see it.

As far away as that sounds now, I’m sure it will be well worth the wait. So far, no news has been leaked about what’s in store for Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha. Will we see heartbreak or maybe even another baby in the bunch?

It will be interesting to see where writer and director Michael Patrick King will take the storyline now that the women are more mature and settled down … at least most of them.

We’ll have to hold our breaths to find out the details of the story, but one thing is for sure. We can definitely expect to see more gorgeous fashion. Bring on the designer handbags! With the first Sex and the City movie bringing us chic bags like the Rebecca Minkoff Market Tote and Alexander McQueen Elvie, I’ll be on the edge of my seat to see what new purses the girls will carry during the sequel.

The oversized clutch is a popular look right now as well as the glossy, croco-embossed material. It’s a great way to dress up an outfit without losing the practical aspects of a large bag. A functional and fashionable combination is always ideal for a handbag.

I absolutely love the slightly weathered look of the cognac brown clutch contrasted with the gunmetal, diamond-shaped studs on the front. The top closes with a magnetic snap but also folds over for easier carrying. This clutch would fit great tucked right under your upper arm.

It might not be ideal for long shopping trips or other times you need both hands free, but the Voyager Clutch does offer plenty of storage for this style of handbag. Inside you’ll find a zippered pocket and several slip pockets in addition to the exterior zippered pocket on the back of the bag. If you love the look but prefer a shoulder bag, the Maxx New York Voyager is also available in a double-handle satchel. The oversized clutch version retails for $225.

There is very little that Lanvin does that I don’t like. They have a knack for innovative, subtle design that always seems timely. For some fashionistas, they are the third in a holy trinity that includes Chanel and Dior. I myself worship at a different design altar, but have always delighted in the work of Lanvin.

All that being said, I simply cannot believe that this is a Lanvin bag. It lacks so much that they are known for, well thought out combinations, for example, and materials perfectly suited to their task, for another that I find myself feeling incredulous at the label on this bag.

To say that the combination of the soft, knotted leather handles and the sleek, silvery grey of the bag is incongruous would be an understatement. They simply do not belong together. I like each on its own, but together, they look messy. I find it further distracting that the knotted handles are attached to the main compartment with too-small silver hardware. It makes the handles seem smooshed on somehow, cut and pasted from another purse.

Handles aside, the bag itself is fine. It is a generously-sized bag that would be fabulous as a gym or yoga bag. But for $1,355 retail, I expect something that is suitable for more than just the locker room. And, if this is meant to be a gym bag, then why satin? Satin is a gorgeous fabric, to be sure, full of shine and attitude, but it shows wear very quickly, and I can only imagine what this bag might look like after a few weeks of use.

All I can say is that there is a bag out there for everyone, and for someone, the Lanvin Satin Bowler is perfect. But, I, for one, am sticking with my old duffle bag from the YMCA to carry my sweats around in.

Lucky Brand takes traditional patchwork into the 21st century with this fun slouch hobo.

Colorful squares of suede are sewn together to create a vibrant checked pattern. It’s reminiscent of the quilts women used to make in years gone by, but the bright swatches ensure it never feels too old fashioned. In fact, with its natural hobo-like slouch this patchwork tote is right on trend with its boho-chic look.

Things are also kept current with the slouch tote’s large size. There’s enough room inside to carry your wallet, sunglasses, personal technology, a small bottle of water, and the latest copy of Vogue. Keys and loose change are also taken care of with a zippered pocket in the back wall. A snap closure at the top keeps everything inside safe and secure.

I love the look of the whipstitched leather handbag flanked by large metal rings, but it’s not the most practical choice. The six inch drop is adequate for over the shoulder carrying, but it’s still a little short to be truly comfortable.

It may have its flaws, but I’m willing to overlook them for the $158 retail price. That’s a lot less than you’ll pay for many Lucky Brand shoulder bags, yet this slouch tote doesn’t skimp on style or substance.

This Planetes purse takes the fun, casual style of a messenger bag and gives it a new chic twist.

This Longchamp messenger is made from polymide, a durable fabric which is as tough as Vin Diesel but a whole lot more relaxed. This casual material is dressed up with matching crocodile leather trim.

One thing I tend to love about messengers is their functional design, but that’s been compromised here by the Planetes’ small stature. The tiny interior only has room for one zippered pocket. Two flap pockets up front and a zippered compartment on the back do their best to offer more storage options, but it’s still likely to disappoint fans of the current oversized trend. On the plus side, it won’t weigh you down when you’ve got errands to run.

I can overlook the Planetes practical limitations, but the price is another matter. I know crocodile leather is expensive, but the miniscule amount used here doesn’t seem to justify the $278 retail price. This is definitely a purse to seek out on eBay to get your money’s worth.
