In keeping with the current trend for oversized handbags comes the Versace Darling satchel, a purse which can go from large to enormous with ease.

The supple calfskin leather is at once casually slouchy and chic. The stark white color dresses things up, but I wonder how long it’ll look this good. The protective feet on the base will help matters, but you might want to move it away from the table while you’re eating spaghetti!

While the color may not be so practical, the design definitely is. Purses so large can be difficult to navigate, but the abundance of pockets inside and out will help you stay organized. I can’t imagine needing any more space than the standard mode, but if you do just unbuckle the side belts. By undoing them you’ll lose the ruched look but have even more space for luxuries.

Those tiny top handles won’t do you much good once the Darling is full, so it also comes with two longer shoulder straps. When they’re buckled at the base you can wear this satchel backpack-style. I must admit that I haven’t carried a backpack since high school, but when it’s Versace it’s easy to make an exception.

A name like Versace never comes cheap, so it’s no surprise that this isn’t a bag for bargain hunters. Expect to pay a four-figure sum, even on eBay. If money is no object consider treating yourself to the more luxurious crocodile and ostrich leather versions!

Chloe is a label that seems to be in a constant state of self re-invention. And as such, they are often bring us fresh new takes on old styles, retro reconfigured and reconstructed for a new era.

I guess you could call the Andy Tote a reimagining of 80’s preppy chic. The boxy shape and crisp design harken back to the days of dock shoes and pegged pants. The colors are somewhat refreshed, not your typical nautical white and navy, but something that has a nautical feel nonetheless.

The only thing about doing a re-make of preppy styles is that you can’t take them too far over the top, or else they just aren’t preppy anymore. So, the Andy Tote, despite its subtle revisions, still looks to me like an 80’s preppy bag. So the the question I have to ask is: what’s the point?

The bag is cute, but honestly, it looks like I could buy from L.L. Bean for under a hundred bucks, maybe $125 with monogramming. The canvas is sturdy and the bag well designed, but this is a $1,375 handbag, and I simply think that it is not worth the price.

I really like the easy chic appeal of the bag, and the zip around bottom. It has well-placed outer pockets on each side, and is easy to get into with the full zip top. The dual rolled leather handles are comfortable, and there is no irritatingly large logo to contend with the clean lines of the tote. I also think the small logo charms attached to the zipper pulls are a smart method of branding, subtle, but memorable. But despite all its good attributes, I just think this bag costs too much money, and unless you have a lot extra laying around, it just isn’t the most remarkable way to spend almost $1,400.

Ever been curious to get in the mind of Armani? Well, we can at least get a glimpse this week. The designer can now add ‘guest blogger’ to his resume as he is writing for the fashion section of the New York Times‘ blog The Moment.

The renowned designer writes about his arrival to the Big Apple for a new store opening, his Central Park West penthouse with too much light (poor Giorgio), and his dislike of commercialized holidays like Valentine’s Day. The first article is full of interesting tidbits into his world and pithy comments that make me want to hang out with him for a day.

“I ate spaghetti con pomodoro and basilico — and, here, I must interject something for your benefit. Americans overcook their pasta. Always. And there’s too much sauce. Too much of everything! Please, try to control yourselves.“

I wouldn’t add ‘journalist’ to his list of jobs quite yet, but Armani appears to have a knack for writing and telling it like it is. Look for more of his blog posts as the week continues.

The weather might be warming up, and designers might be releasing their gorgeous new spring and summer lines, but I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to winter just yet. One purse that exemplifies the chilly season is the Stella hobo from Ugg Australia.

This hobo’s traditional crescent shape is given a functional twist with the addition of two front pockets. Each pouch is trimmed with shearling and lined with ultra soft sheepskin. They close with a snap so your goodies will stay snug and safe inside.

The same sheepskin is used to line the bag’s main compartment. If you’ve ever owned a pair of Ugg boots, you’ll know how soft and warm this is. It doesn’t serve quite the same purpose in purse form, but it does feel lovely when you’re fishing around to retrieve your keys and wallet!

Creative director Brian Atwood has turned up the heat for Bally’s spring summer 2009 advertising. The steamy campaign is his first for the fashion label, and it’s making a big impression.

In another case of pairing a classic supermodel with a hot young thing, Brian has chosen Christy Turlington and Oriol Elcacho as his stars. The 40-year-old glamourpuss still oozes sex appeal in her swimsuit. With her flawless skin and flat stomach, there’s no way she looks 10 years older than Oriol!

Photographer Mario Sorrenti embraced the warmer weather and shot this commercial in Miami Beach. The poolside setting was ideal for providing the vibrant saturated colors that are so hot this season.

I love the way Christy’s brown bathers coordinate with her slouchy python purse. I can just imagine rocking that look with some neutral flip-flops at my beach. I’m not sure I’d look as glam as Christy, but I’d love to give it a try!

It seems contradictory to describe a bag as both slouchy and structured, but the London satchel from Treesje doesn’t like to play by the rules. Soft natural grained leather hangs on a structured boxy frame to create a look that’s both relaxed, yet sophisticated. This makes the London one of the most versatile satchels I’ve seen.

The boxy design makes it look a lot like a gym bag, and it could easily do this job. But I’d hesitate to put my stinky sneakers and sweats into such a luxurious handbag! The splash of hexagonal studs on the front offers a little edge. They’re just for show, but the London’s exterior isn’t only about good looks. It also comes with a zippered pocket on the front and another in back for stashing the bits and pieces you want on hand.

It’s a good thing too, because this bag is so big things could easily got lost without some clever organization. Triple zips at the top open to reveal three separate secure compartments. They also come complete with pockets, so even the most scatterbrained bagista will find it easy to keep her essentials in order. The hardest part is remembering where you’ve stashed that ringing cell phone!

The London satchel doesn’t quite have the style to function as an evening bag, but it’d be ideal for a casual café meal, a day at the mall, or as a piece of carry-on luggage. But at $670 retail, be prepared to save your pennies if you want to tote this Treesje studded satchel.

Take one Burch Degrade Tote, swap the graduated patent leather for some slouchy suede and you’ve got the T-Tote. This handbag is for girls that like the subtle perforated logo but want a more relaxed everyday look. No wonder it’s a favorite of down-to-earth celebs like Christy Turlington and Anne Hathaway!

The T-Tote might look more casual than its glossy sister, but that doesn’t mean it blends into the background. The vibrant color palette features delicious gelato shades like fuchsia, orange, and this yummy coral red. The design is kept clean and simple, with only a smattering of rivet studs and a perforated logo accenting the traditional box tote shape. This Tory Burch crest is eye-catching without being ostentatious.

A host of organizational features make the tote’s deep design more manageable. Items are still likely to slide to the bottom, but the inner zip pocket, cell phone slip, and PDA pouch ensure the goodies you need on hand stay within easy reach.

There’s little to fault here, but I’m not sure that justifies the $395 price. I’d want something a little more unique before I laid down all that cash. It’s a good thing that with so many bargains on eBay, you probably won’t have to pay retail!

From the outside this Swoop handbag looks like any ordinary duffle. The domed shape and dual rolled handles are nothing new. The art deco wallpaper print might be striking, but even that isn’t particularly interesting. But it’s the features that make it worth a second glance.

It all starts with the long slip pocket on the front. The pattern disguises this storage pouch, but it shouldn’t be overlooked. I can imagine it’d be the ideal place for storing your airline tickets, passport, and other items you need at your fingertips on the big trip.

The interior is made to carry everything you need to survive a domestic trip or a longer international flight. Its generous interior offers ample space for snacks and a bottle of water, the latest copy of Vogue, and the cosmetics you need to freshen up before stepping onto the tarmac. The only problem with so much space is that bags can risk becoming black holes. There’s a big zippered pocket on the inner wall to complement the one outside, but I can’t help wishing for more compartments to keep everything in order.

At $110 retail, this Swoop travel bag feels a little pricy for what it is. Perhaps if it were made from real leather or had a more unique look I’d be more willing to hand over my cash. Regular jetsetters might be able to justify the expense, but the rest of us may prefer to use an oversized purse on our occasional flights.

Sometimes the term “hobo” gets tossed around a bit too loosely when it comes to handbags, in my opinion. Is it mid-sized and slouchy with a shoulder strap? Then it’s probably categorized as a hobo bag.

This Maxx New York Babbo Hobo is an example of a purse that carries the term without having the typical half-moon shape that technically makes a hobo a hobo. This nearly square handbag certainly doesn’t resemble a crescent, but it does have the expected slouchiness of most hobo handbags.

What it lacks in true hobo-esque features, however, it makes up for with storage and style. While the interior contains several handy pockets including one specifically designated for your iPod, the exterior has two unexpected pockets that add a lot of practicality to the Babbo. You’ll find a zippered one on the front and a slip pocket on the back.

As far as style goes, the pleats on the front are a nice addition to soften the look of the handbag. Buckled accents on the shoulder strap and silver-toned hardware complement the style as well.

Maxx New York is known for mimicking designer looks for less while still using quality materials. I wouldn’t exactly call this one an inexpensive bag as it still retails for over $200, but it’s a lot easier on the wallet than most items from Marc Jacobs or Chloe. The Babbo also comes in a tote and satchel version.
