We’ve carried them over our shoulder, in our hand, and slung across our body, but handbags on our head? I’m not sure if this trend will catch on.

This bizarre photo comes from Isaac Mizrahi’s fall/winter 2009 collection. It’s not an isolated shot. Isaac seems to love this offbeat look because he’s fitted out plenty of models with handbag hats. I know it’s the job of any designer to push the envelope, but this might be taking things a bit far.

The purse hats are fairly simple in design, with basic leather finishes in rich fall shades. If he’d stopped there, I might have warmed to this look. But the two stiff handles coming out of the top just appear odd. Why do you need handles up there? Does Isaac expect us to take it off our head and carry it by hand at some point?

But maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on this strange fashion fad.  With a couple of pockets inside, you could use your bag hat as a convenient place to stash gloss and spare change! Perhaps Isaac Mizrahi is onto something after all!

Zac Posen can inject a little style and security into your everyday with the Chelsea Lock tote.

The glazed grain leather is luxuriously soft, giving the tote a relaxed slouch. The cobalt blue shade may seem a little dramatic for conservative tastes at first, but when you see how good it looks with your favorite denim jeans you might just reconsider. It’s also in keeping with the current trend for everything 1980s, but I expect its appeal to last a little longer than that fad.

The front features a spacious flap pocket with a slide lock closure. The polished gunmetal lock looks fantastic, but the added security it provides is much more important. Use this roomy compartment to store the valuables you need on hand like spare change, personal technology, and other essentials.

The interior takes up where the outside left off, with stacks of cleverly designed, functional storage space. The large zippered pocket in the center acts as a divider, separating the tote into three handy compartments. More zip and slip pockets in the side walls make organization a breeze.

There’s so much to love about the Chelsea, but the cost isn’t one of them. The $1875 price tag seems more Fifth Avenue than West Side!

Stella McCartney and PETA are joining together for an upcoming event at Paris Fashion Week. McCartney, an avid supporter of the anti-fur/anti-leather movement, is not the only celebrity to lend a hand for PETA’s newest commercial seen here.

Though it’s at McCartney’s post-runway news conference that the spot will be launched, Ricky Gervais and singer Pink are the real stars of the commercial. You’ll only recognize their voices, though, as their characters are a rabbit and alligator, respectively.

The short, tongue-in-cheek ad shows the animals without their skin and fur demanding their stolen articles from a couple carrying a leather bag and fur coat. It’s a little jolting to watch at first, but PETA definitely gets their point across with this one.

I know that we aren’t limited to white in the spring and summer months any longer, but I can’t help but get excited for warm weather clothing when I see a pretty white handbag like this one.

The Matt & Nat Camden bag isn’t made from your typical leather, but you’ll hardly notice. The vegan-friendly material has a bit of a sheen without looking like a patent purse.

Though the Camden is classified as a hobo, I think it should be more specifically named a square hobo bag since it really doesn’t have the expected crescent shape of most hobos.

A large square hobo like this can be great for storage, though. You might lose a few things down at the bottom of the bag since it’s height and depth are fairly close in size. However, despite its oversized status, it’s still more compact than some enormous satchels you could carry but nearly comparable in storage space.

If you don’t generally go for white handbags, the Camden also comes in a bright blue, red, or simple black. The top closes with a zipper but also has a flap with a snap for extra style. The interior is lined with a faux suede like most Matt & Nat handbags. With a cute purse like this that’s made from 100% recycled material bottles, it’s not hard to combine fashion with eco-friendly living.

What I find most appealing about Marc Jacobs is his uncanny ability to predict what we American women are feeling most nostalgic for. Five years ago, it was the 70’s striped shirts my babysitter wore, and right now it’s the 80’s badgirl style alá Joan Jett.

The Strippy Zippy Resort Hobo is basically my junior high fantasy handbag. Everything about it says badass, from the supple black leather to the abundance of zippered pockets. The shape, for me, is exactly how hobos are meant to be, not too big, not too small, and ever so gently rounded at the edges.

The detailing on the bag is on par with what we have come to expect from Marc Jacobs. The x front seam is a great detail that brings your eye naturally to the nameplate, which, in black enamel and shiny silver, goes perfectly with the hard-edged attitude of the bag completely.

The shoulder strap is the perfect length to hug right against your body, the way a hobo should. There are two interior organizational pockets for you cell or PDA, and an additional zipper pocket, to help you from losing all your little necessities. The only thing I don’t really dig about the Strippy Zippy Resort Hobo is the price. At $458, I feel like I should be getting more than a blast from the past.

The team from luxury online store Net-a-Porter is preparing to launch their new discount outlet, cutely called OutNet.com. Next month the budget hotspot will start selling luxury handbags, apparel, lingerie, and other accessories for a fraction of their retail cost.

“On offer will be a mix of the former season’s merchandise, classic pieces and greatest hits resurrected from designers’ archives, all with average discounts of 40 to 60 percent. The company also plans to give some items away for free,” explained a company representative.

Few good things have come from the economic downturn, but surely this is one of them. These days we’re all tightening our designer belts and sniffing out ways to make our money go further. The mutual admiration between Madonna and Gianni Versace is legendary. She starred in his advertising campaigns, and he made her this handbag!

Just like the Queen of Pop herself, this purse is no shrinking violet. This silver embossed ostrich version is incredibly in your face, but even the conservative shades are big on flash. Versace hasn’t skimped on the hardware, with large belted details and splashing of studs giving this purse just the right rock star edge.

The structured shape limits the Madonna’s storage capabilities, but there should still be enough room for your daily must-haves. The zippered wall pocket is large enough to pack a real organizational punch. The side pocket adds convenience, but it’s not my favorite feature. Perhaps it’s the asymmetry it brings to the bag, but it appears a little tacked on.

The short handles mean over the shoulder-toting is out of the question. This purse is a little chunkier than I’d fancy lugging around by hand all day, so if you’re running errands you may want to leave this glamour puss at home.

The Madonna makes the sort of style statement that requires just the right occasion. Such a dramatic bag will never become part of your everyday wardrobe, but on the arm of someone with enough attitude it could look devastating.

Miu Miu’s Spring ’09 accessory collection has a lot of complicated textures and patterns in it, and some of them are a lot better executed than others. I was really disappointed with the Geometric Snake Print Bag, and while this bag is very similar, it is generally better looking.

The polka dot print over the whip snakeskin leather is interesting, and texturally rich. I think that it would be more successful on a larger bag, where the combination is less compacted, but I don’t hate it on this 12″ x 6″ x 2″ tote. The gold print logo and shiny gold hardware complement the black and white print of the East West Shoulder bag beautifully.

The dual handles are a little short, with just a 4-inch drop, but the removable shoulder strap makes them sensible, since they are just for hand-holding. I am a little leery of the boxy shape of the bag, and think that it may not be that flattering for all women, since when full it will stand out far from the body.

Overall, the Miu Miu East West Shoulder Bag is a cute carryall with a few design flaws that aren’t really fatal.

A lot of buzz has surrounded the upcoming film Coco avant Chanel, and now we can finally see what the hype is all about with the recently released trailer.

The film, which stars French actress Audrey Tautou, follows the early years of the infamous Gabrielle Chanel. It will highlight the many difficulties and hardships she had to overcome, as biopics generally seem to go, before emerging as the legendary Coco.

Fashion will be one of the stars of the film, of course, since Chanel has become one of the most coveted labels for handbags, clothing, and more. Rumor has it that the movie ends with a grand runway show of the designer’s most classic styles.

Residents of France will be able to see Coco avant Chanel later this spring while the rest of us will have to wait until later in the year. Judging by the juicy trailer, I’m guessing it will be worth it.

A fully leather Juicy Couture bag without printed logos can be a rare find. Okay, maybe they’re not that uncommon, but I definitely associate the brand mostly with velvet. However, Juicy has some great soft leather options like this Marion D and the Freestyle handbag.

When you get one of their velvet-and-screenprint-free purses, you’ll probably make up for the details with Juicy’s signature charms. This Key & Shell Marion D hobo has quite a lot of them too. As you’d expect, there’s a key and a shell detail along with a small pouch and tassel. Don’t think Juicy would have just any key, though. This one spells out the brand name and displays their signature crown.

As for other details, the Marion D has a single strap attached with rings. Though the style is fairly slouchy by nature of it being a hobo shape, subtle stitching on the front and back gives the bag the illusion of structure.

The interior contains several typical storage spaces including zippered and slip pockets. In addition, there’s a convenient removable mirror that you’ll find with many Juicy Couture handbags. What the leather Marion D lacks in exterior branding, it makes up for inside with a printed lining. This medium-sized hobo retails for $378. If you love the Key & Shell charms, be sure to look for Juicy’s other bag styles with the same feature.
