Ostrich is one of the big trends for the season, and lots of designers are taking advantage of the popularity of the luxury material by offering more affordable versions. Whereas true ostrich leather handbags can run upwards of $5,000, ostrich-embossed leather is a better option for getting the same look for a lot less.

This Furla Elisabeth Shoulder Hobo accomplishes this perfectly. The light pink is a nice light color in contrast to some of the extremely vibrant tones we’ve been seeing lately. Of course, there’s a time and an outfit for both kinds of colors, but there’s something about this ostrich texture on pastel pink that is so feminine and pretty.

Furla was prepared for the outfits that require a bolder color, though. You can also get the Elisabeth hobo in a deep magenta purple. Personally, I think the light pink could be more versatile, but the magenta is a fun, unexpected option that could spice up a drab outfit.

This particular hobo bag is a medium size with a decent amount of open storage inside. Though the ostrich-embossed texture is beautiful, the Elisabeth handbag also comes in solid leather, too. The retail price of $495 is still a bit high for many budgets, but it’s much more attainable than the real deal.

Christian Louboutin is like the patron saint of sexy glamour. Between his sky high stilettos and his ultra-luxe handbags, the man has the market cornered on covetable accessories.

This champagne leather clutch isn’t really what I expect of Louboutin, but it’s not entirely out of character, either. The Pillow Leather Clutch just has a lot more going on than Louboutin’s typically sleeker style. 

The combination of asymmetrically placed gold zippers and intersecting pleats gives the bag a lot of attitude and texture. The addition of the clear plastic zipper pulls is perhaps a little too much for some, but it lends a futuristic vibe to a bag that is otherwise really rock-n-roll.

I always appreciate a chain link shoulder strap, not because it is practical, or even comfortable, but there is something very blasé and carefree about the look that wins me over almost every time. To be truthful, the color scheme on the bag is a little confusing. I love the shiny gold hardware against the soft shade of the leather, but the addition of the plastic makes the bag look somewhat clashing and overworked. 

This is a cute clutch for a girl who likes a lot of embellishment on her bag, but I think some of us will save the $1,295 for the next Louboutin that comes around.

Californian designer Cynthia Vincent has made a splash with her pretty and practical fashions and stylish, yet comfortable, shoes. In fall she’ll release her first handbag collection, and it stays true to the Cynthia Vincent ethos.

“I wanted to make bags that are comfortable, easy and useful,” Ms Vincent said in a statement. “The kind of bags you wear all the time. I approached them like I do the clothes – by taking classics and making them new and interesting but not so trendy that they’re out one season. I wanted them to last, the way my clothes can.”

The Belleville is Be & D’s most popular hobo bag. The leather version is a classic, but to really stand out from the crowd this summer I prefer this fun yellow eelskin variety.

We recently brought you news of punk singer Beth Ditto’s first foray into fashion with a line for clothing brand Evans. Ditto must be brushing up on her style knowledge because she’s been spotted at Paris Fashion Week.

The celebrity-studded runway shows like Stella McCartneyand Jean Paul Gaultier should seem like a natural place for an up-and-coming star like Ditto, but she admits to being completely out of her element. Despite many offers to appear at such events, she consistently turned them down.

“From the punk perspective, doing things like coming to Paris and going to all the fashion shows would be the downfall of your art,” Ms. Ditto said. “Punk can be very dogmatic and judgmental.”

Bulga is a brand that generally offers quality leather bags at a slightly more affordable price than some designers. Affordable, though, is a relative word when it comes to fashion.

This Butterfly Shoulder Bag, for example, retails for $465, which is less than so many big name purses but still a tad pricey for many shoppers. However, the quality of the details is great for the under-$500 range. Bulga is known for this, and it shows on the Butterfly handbag.

It earns its name from the curved stitching on the front that creates a delicate winged shape. In case the feature might seem too feminine, Bulga added a contrasting style with silver studs. I wouldn’t exactly say it gives the bag a rock-and-roll style, but it does take off the ultra-girly edge.

The silver-toned handle rings and zipper tassel are nice additions as well. The bright blueish-green color is vibrant and perfect for the spring. I also appreciate the double flat handles that sit comfortably on your shoulder.

Inside the Butterfly, a pastel printed lining reminds us that this is a pretty handbag meant for women. If the bright green is too colorful for you, this Bulga shoulder bag also comes in a neutral taupe and dark brown.

There’s nothing like an super luxurious clutch in an eye-popping hue to perk up an old LBD. Marni brings a fun, irreverent touch to this evening wear style.

The best thing about this bag is that it looks and feels soft to the touch, but is actually a lot more structurally sound than your average clutch. The frame top gives it a tailored, sophisticated shape and makes it more durable. The soft pleating around the edges isn’t just a decorative touch. The added fabric acts as reinforcement, and masks any minor dings and scratches.

The color of this bag is like something from under the sea. New, it glows like some exotic creature, but I wonder how the color will fare through years of use. The same goes for the suede. I love the look and feel of it, but I would hate to see it get that rubbed down, pilly look that old suede sometimes gets. So, while the bag is sturdy on the inside, the outside is a little delicate.

At 11″ x 11″ x 4″, it is a nice oversized clutch. You could fit as much in here as you wanted to, or at least as much as you could possibly want for an evening out. Overall, I really like the look of the Marni Violet Suede Frame Clutch, but I’m not sure about its ability to look good long term.

The glossy good looks and lagoon blue shade of the Pachi Tote make it ideal for the warmer weather ahead.

Some may lament the lack of color variations, but I’m sold on this fun turquoise tone. It reminds me of Mediterranean summers, but I can also imagine it popping against my darker winter wardrobe.

I tend to think of patent leather purses having a defined structure, but that’s not the case here. The heavy material is ruched near the top to create the sort of casual slouch we tend to see on hobos. It adds interest to the fairly basic shape, but it also makes the purse look a little too relaxed for most after five functions.

A structured divider separates the Pachi’s interior into two functional sections. It’s not as practical as the large pockets I’ve seen in so many other handbags, which provide added storage and organization in one. But it does help make this long interior a little easier to manage.

The tortoise shell handles look gorgeous, but something tells me they’ll feel a little uncomfortable in your palm when your Pachi is loaded up. The removable shoulder strap is a much more practical choice. We still enjoy the retro charms of tortoise shell in the chain links, but the patent leather centers offer the carrying comfort we need.
