She’s one of the faces of Louis Vuitton’s spring 2009 accessories advertisements. The commercials are the brainchild of New Zealand born illustrator James Dignan. Australians may have seen his handiwork in Sydney fashion mags, but now he’s moving up in the world with this global campaign.

These cute ads were overseen by Louis Vuitton’s creative director Christian Reuilly and artistic director Camille George. They’re daringly different, and I think the gamble pays off. The illustrations have a really fun, modern energy about them. And without a big name model to distract us, this casual Louis Vuitton satchel takes center stage where it belongs.

This is one of five new Louis Vuitton advertisements, which also feature the fashion house’s sunglasses and strappy sandals.

There’s often a fine line between bags that are feminine and bags that are frou-frou. By creating the Wanda in conservative and luxurious black satin, Lulu Guinness has designed a purse that’s girly without being garish.

Satin tends to wear, but Lulu Guinness has thoughtfully included four metal studs on the base to protect your investment. It might still be a little fussy to carry everyday, but at $335 retail the Wanda isn’t bad value for times when you’re feeling extra pretty!

Books and movies about fashion designers seems to be a growing trend right now. The book about Yves Saint Laurent’s art collection is being published, the Coco Chanel film hits theaters soon, and Valentino is appearing on talk shows to promote the new documentary about him. Maybe an overall decline in fashion industry sales has caused a slight shift of interest from their collections to the designers’ private lives.

The newest report of a behind-the-scenes peek into the fashion world is a book about Alexander McQueen. Photographer Nick Waplington is said to have shadowed McQueen as the designer went about the business of preparing his most recent Paris Fashion Week collection.

The book is rumored to be released sometime next year, although the exact date remains unknown for now. It will be interesting to find out if McQueen’s inspiration behind the unique make-up and accessories choices for his Paris runway show is part of the project. If so, I can imagine big sales for this one…or at least tons of bookstore skimming.

If you’re going to pay over $900 for a bag, it might as well be one you can use several different ways. I appreciate how many designers today are offering handbags that can convert between two or more styles.

This Bally Pemba Pouchette is one of those clever totes that actually transitions between three different purses. You can carry it in your hands as a vertical tote, although this option might not be terribly comfortable for long periods of time. Also, the top half folds down so the bag can function as a clutch for dressier outfits. The last, but not least, option is to attach the single chain and leather strap and carry the Pemba on your shoulder.

Of the three styles, the shoulder bag is probably the most practical, but I do think that the style of the Pemba Pouchette is fully appreciated when extended as a tote. The soft striped suede is in plain view, and the modern square cutout handles are easily seen. These are two of the best features of the bag, so why not display them in their best form as shown in the picture.

However, it’s nice to know that you’ve got options with this handbag. With Bally, you know you’ll be getting great quality and style, but you’ll be grateful for the versatility as well. If you like the concept but wish it were more basic, look for the Pemba Pouchette in an equally soft solid black leather.

The rumors have been swirling for a while, but now it’s official: creative director Olivier Theyskens and Nina Ricci have parted ways.

In a joint statement, the Belgian designer and the French fashion house said their contract was terminated on March 10, ahead of its expiration in October.

The statement said Nina Ricci “wishes to re-orientate its development strategy for the years to come. Consequently, Nina Ricci and its artistic director Olivier Theyksens have decided by mutual agreement to cease their collaboration.”

Olivier and Nina Ricci declined to comment further on the split, but it seems the writing has been on the wall for some time. Olivier’s gothic leanings were always at odds with Nina Ricci’s romantic, elegant image. In some ways, it’s surprising the pairing lasted two years!

The official statement did not name Olivier’s successor but it’s believed to be Peter Copping, the current design deputy to Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton.

As for Olivier, it’s believed he’s considering relaunching his signature label. With the freedom to experiment with edgy designs, it should be one to watch!

The three-day auction for the late Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge’s renowned art collection was one of the grandest events this year. With items like a single Matisse painting selling for a record $40 million, the legendary designer’s grand taste was far out of reach for most fans.

However, everyone can still get in on the action without shelling out the big bucks to have the actual items. Thames & Hudson has published a beautiful “coffee table” book displaying the expansive collection in their original location, the designer’s home.

The photographic record of the now-scattered collection is descriptively entitled The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge and contains a foreword by Berge himself. For around $85, you can have a little YSL style in hardback for your home.

You might not be able to accessorize an outfit with it, but it will definitely provide inspiration.
