With its bold geometric print of fiery oranges and reds, the Dora from Salvatore Ferragamo is ready for summer.

It gets its glossy good looks not from patent leather, but from PVC coated canvas. It’s a durable choice designed for its maximum strength and easy-clean appeal, but it makes the $560 retail value seem a little overpriced. For that price I expect genuine leather, and I’m sure I’m not alone.

If you can swallow the fabric and the price, the Dora does have its charms. The abstract pattern is just loud enough to spice up a plain sundress without overwhelming it, and the colors are ideal for the warmer weather ahead.

The Dora has space to spare, but it needs more than one zippered pocket to be really functional. I’m also a little disappointed by the open top design. Easy access is always nice, but not when it comes at the expense of security.

Large handbags are always so tempting to overstuff, but the handles don’t make this the wisest idea. Their skinny Minnie design, like so many elements of the Dora, is made for looks, not comfort.

The Treesje Juniper is one of those bags that’s classified as a hobo but doesn’t really look much like one to me. The Strippy Zippy is a hobo with its half-moon shape. I suppose the Juniper has a bit of that classic shape to it, but it’s got more of a triangular silhouette.

Despite what I consider a slightly incorrect classification, this Treesje Juniper is a decent handbag. The stone-colored leather has just a hint of a weathered appearance but doesn’t look rustic. It’s also softened a little by the ruching that creates its slouchy effect.

The slight triangular shape of this handbag is accentuated by the studded flaps on each bottom corner. Although they looked like small pockets to me at first glance, they’re merely decorative accents.

The light brown stone color is nice, but the black leather is the sleeker option, in my opinion. With decent storage space, interesting details, and quality material, the Treesje Juniper is a great everyday handbag. I’m not sure if that makes it worthy its nearly $500 price tag, but it’s at least worth a look.

Marc Jacobs is one designer that is not afraid of reinvention. Here he reprises his iconic Stam bag with the punchy twist of Swavorski-studded quilting. The result is sparkly and ladylike, and Marc Jacobs all over.

The material of the Stam Swarovski Shoulder Bag gives a trompe l’oeil quilted impression created by the combination of leather and crystals. The stitching in between the crystal patches gives the exterior an unusual texture and depth.

While I think the feminine Stam shape is simple and classic enough to pull off the bling, there’s something a little overdesigned about this bag that turns me off. I usually love the addition of a chain strap, but it’s so shiny and gold that it looks a bit cheap up against the crystals.

Other than the over-embellishment, I can find little fault with the Stam Swarovski bag. It has two conveniently located exterior zipper pockets, and the dual rolled leather handles are comfortable with a 5″ drop. The sturdy frame top closes with an understated gold clasp.

Despite my personal reticence over the sparkle of the bag, I think it’s a great one for making the day-to-night transition. I can see that, for a woman who can pull of all this bling, it would work at the office, and all that glitter will bring it seamlessly into the evening.

Major design house Louis Vuitton has proven itself as a worthy opponent when it comes to protecting its well-established name. With various lawsuits involving eBay and Britney Spears, the company has vehemently defended its sophisticated image.

What’s upsetting them now? They’re annoyed with the result pages that show up when you look up their name on the search-engine giant Google. According to Louis Vuitton, a search for their brand name should only result in authentic products and not other retailers that sell counterfeits and knock-offs.

They are fighting the fact that Google sells keywords to whoever offers the most money … not the brand that owns the licensing rights to the name. On the other side of the coin, Google argues that the number of clicks is the determining factor for them.

“Google makes money not by reason of the nature of the keyword, but by someone clicking on the keyword,” Google lawyer Alexandra Neri argued – seemingly placing the responsibility with the user. “The decision to click or not to click belongs to whom? Clearly to the internet user.“

You can make your own judgment on the matter, but what I know for sure is that Louis Vuitton is very aggressive in protecting their brand name

Roberto Cavalli is one of those designers who loves to take risks. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t, but it’s always exciting to see what he’s going to do next!

Overall the Amulet is one of those handbags that doesn’t quite gel with me. The velour fabric is luxurious with its deep color options. The sexy soft fabric is embellished with subtle stripes, mimicking popular tiger and zebra prints without the flash. But then there are the silver sides, which don’t seem to mesh at all. Looking at the purse side on, the elaborate leather patches have an almost medieval appearance with their colored gemstone studs. Both elements have their merits, but together they just don’t seem to mesh. The leather accents seem too edgy for such a soft fabric center, and the combination of medieval influences and contemporary animal print is a little confusing.

Even the use of silver leather for the shoulder strap can’t unify this purse’s design. The double handle is banded at the center with a whip-stitched leather piece. It’s a stylish look, but it’s also one that doesn’t seem to suit the rest of the bag. It’s on the short side too, so over the shoulder toting is out of the question.

The exterior may leave me a little cold, but Roberto Cavalli hasn’t done a bad job on the interior. There’s nothing too out of the ordinary, but the zip and slip pockets are always welcome additions to keep purse clutter at bay. The animal print lining is also a fun modern touch.

This is one of those bags that’s made to be noticed. I just can’t guarantee that it will be for the right reasons!

Handbag genius Marc Jacobs and his advertising executive boyfriend Lorenzo Martone are engaged! The couple, who have been together for about a year, will go public with the news when they arrive in Brazil today wearing rings!

The couple is visiting Lorenzo’s native Sao Paolo for a fete to celebrate the Marc Jacobs store which opened there in January. While there, Marc will also meet Lorenzo’s mother for the first time. How exciting!

“It’s really early to share, but our relationship is getting stronger and more mature. And with that, some things might happen,” he said.

They have not set a wedding date, but they are considering tying the knot in St. Barths.

“We experienced a really great vacation in St. Barth’s recently,” Lorenzo shared recently. “It was during the winter in December. It was super warm, people were relaxed, tanned, and we were having an amazing time with our friends. So why not? Maybe a New Year’s Eve wedding in St. Barth’s would be really fun.“

Paul Smith bags are instantly recognizable for their iconic swirl signature stripe. This rainbow pattern is a real head-turner, but such a colorful design will never impress everybody.

For this messenger bag Paul’s turned things down a notch, creating a versatile handbag that would be equally at home in the office or worn with jeans and your favorite T-shirt. The vibrant colors we’re used to are replaced with earthy muted tones. These sedate shades allow the beautiful texture of the pebbled leather to shine through. They’re also a natural complement to the brushed brass hardware. Those buckles look brilliant, but I imagine they’d be a little fiddly to use on a day-to-day basis.

The exterior is impressive, but inside it’s a little underwhelming. I’m used to messenger bags being functional, and this one doesn’t quite live up to that reputation. A large slip pocket seems like a token organizational touch that’s not really going to do a great deal. It’s too narrow to hold much more than a few papers, which don’t really benefit from being stashed in a separate compartment. A zip pocket or a smaller cell phone pouch would have been much more useful.

So often handles look tacked on, so I’m impressed that the swirls also decorate the shoulder strap. It might be pretty, but the strap lacks a little practicality. I’m so used to messenger bags providing adjustable straps for cross-body and shoulder carrying, but that’s not the case here. I think we’ll miss that added versatility when the Yvonne is packed to capacity.

Whether you prefer this muted swirl look or its more colorful cousin is simply a matter of personal preference. But isn’t it nice to see a designer who caters for conservative and daring tastes alike? It’s just a shame Paul Smith couldn’t deliver a bag with a practical design to back up its good looks.

It wasn’t your average documentary premiere on a weekday night. With all of the buzz surrounding the new film Valentino: The Last Emperor, there were sure to be some big names attending.

Celebrity fans, models, and designers showed up in droves for the opening night including everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Hathaway to Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen. Valentino must have made quite an impression during his appearance on The Martha Stewart Show as the queen of craft herself was in attendance as well.

“I am so proud,” said the designer, flanked by Paltrow and Madonna at a dinner held after the screening at the Plaza’s Oak Room.

Well, it’s probably hard not to be with fans like that. The nearly two-hour documentary featuring the designer’s road to retirement (and his love of pugs) has opened in select locations, and will hit other theaters soon.

For a true summery nautical style, Kate Spade’s preppy chic looks are a great place to start. Though the designer has a wide variety of classic bags, coastal casual is probably one of her most well-known trends with details like tassels, grommets, and stripes.

The Easton Kenny personifies that popular seaside style so well. Though there aren’t any stripes on the bag, the Easton Kenny would perfectly accessorize an outfit that has them. Kate Spade must have had yachting and seaside cottages on the mind when designing it since it’s named after a Maryland town on shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It doesn’t get more coastal than that.

I like the fact that the handbag isn’t a literal translation of the style. Instead it just has some subtle features that merely imbue it with that vibe. The square grommet handle anchors are gold-plated and engraved with the Kate Spade logo. A drawstring closure lends a casual air, but the shape is very structured and contained giving it a refined look.

The cowhide material is lightly embossed, resulting in a pebbled texture. The Easton Kenny comes in the light brown color shown here as well as solid black and a truly nautical-looking beige and navy blue combo.

Chloe is known for bringing us designs that are both trendsetting and classic. Their accessory line sets the standard, year after year, for what consumers want. In order to stay ahead of the pack, Chloe takes risks with their designs, combining unusual shapes, fabrics, and colors, to create vibrant and interesting new designs.

The thing about taking fashion risks is that sometimes they are unsuccessful. Combining brown leather and golden brown mesh chainmail probably seemed like a revolutionary idea in the design studio, but on the store shelf, it’s kind of a flop. Honestly, when I look at this bag, I just think it looks ill-conceived and cheap, two things I do not usually associate with Chloe.

Maybe it’s the chainmail that harkens back to all that mesh chainmail jewelry of the 80’s that’s doing it, but something about the Candy Clutch just screams “thrift store”. And, if I did find it for 30 cents, I would probably be thrilled, but in real life, this baby has a retail price of $1,045.

I feel like the idea of this bag was to create a sort of edgy piece in a more conservative neutral tone. You know, for women who are almost ready to take a walk on the wild side, but not quite. The problem is that the combination of chainmail and brown leather looks cheap and unsophisticated. The rectangular shape of the bag is bland and does nothing to enhance its appeal. And then there’s the little bow trim on the zipper. I don’t even know where to begin about that, it just looks out of place and out of proportion.

So, while I will continue to look to Chloe for innovative design, this is not it.
