It’s no surprise that celebrities are the best advertisements for fashion products. Of course, showcasing your items on an A-list star during awards season is easier said than done. Maybe the somewhat easier alternative is getting it on the small screen during primetime.

Elie Tahari has had its share of celebrity party sightings, but it seems to be making it even bigger on television. In recent episodes, more than a handful of Tahari outfits made their TV debut on popular shows like Desperate Housewives and fashion-conscious Ugly Betty.

It’s no surprise then that Tahari’s Aimee blouse popped up the other day on not one but two more highly-watched shows. Calista Flockhart was seen sporting the yellow top on Brothers & Sisters, and designer diva Blake Lively’s character Serena van der Woodsen wore the Aimee blouse on Gossip Girl.

Though I’m sure many faithful fans of Brothers & Sisters noticed and appreciated the pretty top on Flockhart, I have a feeling it was the appearance on the always fashion-forward Gossip Girl that caused the Aimee to fly off Tahari’s boutique shelves. After all, the show has been promoting designer clothing and accessories (like the Gucci Hysteria Python and Lady Dior Cannage) with success since the show’s inception.

This could be just the beginning of Tahari’s television love affair. Keep your eye out for some of their pieces on The Celebrity Apprentice. It’s rumored that self-proclaimed fashionistas Joan and Melissa Rivers recently bought a few items from the designer’s SoHo boutique for future episodes of the reality show.

There’s not a lot about the Florence Shopper’s function that differs from the Jakarta Shopper. While the Florence lacks the exterior storage seen in the Jakarta, it makes up for it with its interior compartments. The details and styles of the two B. Makowsky bags are very different, but the idea is the same: a quality shopper with versatile features.

That being said, there really is a lot of difference when you compare the details. Whereas the Jakarta has an edgy contemporary look, the Florence perfects that sleek modern style that’s so popular right now.

Modern doesn’t have to mean Jane Jetson-esque or futuristic, though. The Florence Shopper just has very simple clean lines that look uncluttered and feminine at the same time. The angular seams on both sides add to the style and give a subtle look of sunbeams without being literal like a bright Juicy Couture print.

Lucky for us, modern style can also mean modern features. This B. Makowsky handbag is no exception. Though the soft white leather and pretty gold hardware look fabulous, they’re just the icing on the cake to what the Florence offers. This shopper actually has a zippered divider in the center that separates the interior for superb organization. Also, like the Jakarta and many other large bags, the Florence has a detachable shoulder strap for easier carrying.

Clutch purses often come out after dark, but if you find the right one it can take you from day to night. If versatility’s what you’re after, allow me to introduce you to the Oxana.

The secret is that soft slouchy leather, which gives the Oxana a more relaxed feel than a more structured box clutch. The fabric’s also not as tizzy as popular brocade or sequined finishes. There’s a time for these glitzy materials, but that tends to only be once the sun goes down. The Oxana might not be quite as flashy, but there’s a quiet sophistication about its leather finish. Its classic black, gray, and white wide stripes give it a chic look that’s a little conservative without being boring.

The Oxana doesn’t just have the looks to take you from day to night; it’s also got the size to match. A large zippered pocket and a cell phone slip are there to keep the essentials in order, while the zip top closure will keep everything safely inside.

While you’ll never have to leave anything behind, it does make me long for a removable shoulder strap. I wouldn’t mind carrying the Oxana by hand if I was traveling light, but it’s bound to get heavy when packed to capacity.

The Cole Haan Phoebe in soft gold is that perfect blend of classic features and metallic leather that combines to look chic and not one bit gaudy. Though it’s also available in basic black or a creamy, springtime ivory, the light gold option is a great way to stand out a little but keep things somewhat understated.

The highlight feature of the Phoebe is definitely the inverted pleats that surround the handbag. This intricate detail is set off beautifully by the artisan braided edges, which aren’t incredibly noticeable but just add to the overall classic style.

A zipper pull tassel with tiny grommet holes on the ends connects to the center zippered compartment. As the Triple Zip’s name implies, this Cole Haan is blessed with three separate compartments inside that each have their own zippered entry. That gives you plenty of space for items and a few organizational configurations, if you’re inclined to keeping your purses in order.

This satchel fits the bill on most important bag aspects, in my opinion. It is simple but elegant, has designer quality details, comes in a few desirable colors, and offers a significant amount of storage space. That almost always adds up to a great handbag. I suppose it could seem too simple for some tastes but would probably suit the majority of female shoppers.

The Phoebe Triple Zip is available in this small, though really quite roomy, satchel as well as an even larger version. The small Phoebe shown here retails for $498.

Alexander McQueen is known for his darkly sophisticated looks and his ingenious use of textures. The Woven Wishbone Shopper combines both of these elements to create a bag that is avant garde, but still wearable.

The combination of fringe and woven leather on this bag make it look somewhat yeti-like, but not in a bad way. McQueen has done an excellent job of recycling 80’s fringe details and making them look new and exciting. The fringe on this bag is worked in so that it lays in unusual and interesting new patterns, instead of just hanging off the side, like usual.

Being of a somewhat gothic temperment, I adore the wishbone rivets on the handle of the bag, but I have a feeling that some people will think them creepy. It just not might be one of those things, like the ubiquitous McQueen skulls, that strikes a chord with everyone. 

The slim handle of the bag is a little awkward for its size. I love the haphazard balance between the two, but fear it might not be that practical for everyday use. At 20″ x 16″ x 3″, this bag is big, even for the oversized trend, and it warrants a strong, sturdy strap, something you can throw over your shoulder easily.

In the Woven Wishbone Shopper, McQueen does a good job of re-interpreting retro 80’s trends and making them relevant for a new audience. Unfortunately, for $6,350, the bag simply isn’t available to that wide an audience. Oh well, I guess the rest of us can dream.

Just when I thought all hobo handbags were beginning to look the same I’ve come across the Cocotte. I should have known that if anyone could reinvigorate the boho-chic staple, it’d be shoe genius Christian Louboutin.

The trademark crescent shape and slouchy profile has been maintained, but the unique pleated exterior gives this boho favorite a sleek, chic look. Unlike so many hobos, this is the sort of purse I can easily imagine carrying to the office, then slinging over my shoulder for margaritas with the girls.

That day to night appeal is helped by the gorgeous earthy red leather. The shade toes the line between conservative and sexy, and it’s hard to find fabric softer than luxurious calf leather.

It’s not perfect though. The signature red satin lining is luxurious, but I’m not confident it’ll stand up to the wear and tear of more practical fabrics. The sole zip pocket has to work overtime in such a generous space, and though it’s large too it’s not really up to the task.

Yet I can’t help lusting after the Cocotte, even though like so much from the Christian Louboutin collection it comes at a price. $2995 big ones to be precise. That’s some serious cash to lay down, but if you’ve got the pennies to spare I can think of worse ways to spend it!

Take one Kan Kan handbag, turn up the volume, and you’ve got Be & D’s Chatterley satchel. It’s got more frills, more metal, and more attitude.

Where the Kan Kan’s ruffles are soft and feminine, the Chatterley’s frills are tight and structured. They don’t have the same girly appeal, which may be a strength or a weakness depending on your taste. I think these small ruffles gel a little better with the studded stripe at the center of the purse. They’ve both got the same edgy feel, a vibe which is mimicked in the metal chain handle.

You can remove the strap if the chain starts to pain your shoulder, but that raises another dilemma. A bag this large is going to make an awkward hand-held clutch. It’s up to you to work out which is the lesser evil!

But at least there’s room inside for all your girly goodies. You’ll have no problems carrying your wallet, sunglasses, and personal technology inside, but the slim profile means you may have rethink toting bulky novels. I would have appreciated a few more pouches and pockets, but mercifully the lone zip pocket is leather trimmed to last.

The Chatterley is like the Kan Kan’s naughty little sister. Its style is a little dirtier and less refined, and that’s exactly why its fans will love it.
