Isaac Mizrahi has given the hobo style a slick makeover with this chic leather purse.

It still has the traditional crescent shape, but it’s a little subtler than many hobo bags. Also pared back is the characteristic slouch, with Isaac Mizrahi favoring a sleeker, more elegant look. Triangular tabs feature large brass grommets threaded with belt accents. These buckle to the front tab for a contemporary, put-together look.

An oval plate bears the Isaac Mizrahi name, but it’s small enough to look stylish rather ostentatious. I can’t say the same for the medallion, which seems to clutter this hobo’s design. It’s not easily removable, but I’m not sure anyone will regret taking the scissors to it!

The zip top closure reveals an interior that’s narrow, yet spacious. There are plenty of pockets for storage, and a hardy cotton lining which should survive daily punishment.

This hobo’s sophisticated good looks and evergreen black leather finish make it a versatile choice for carrying day to night.

Summer gives us the license to embrace our silly side and enjoy fun casual bags like this Felix Rey tote.

It’s made from lightweight woven straw in your choice of navy or brown. This casual material is accented with adorable sequin covered fish with cute button eyes. There are three fish up front and one on the back so it doesn’t matter which way you carry it. A delicate ruffle at the top of the bag adds interest without looking too girly. Its little details like that which make this bag a real find.

The traditional tote shape offers plenty of storage space, but it lacks the organizational features many of us might like. With just a zippered pocket to keep smaller goodies in order, this would work better as a beach bag than a regular day purse.

The dual straps are cotton lined for maximum comfort. They’re too short for over-the-shoulder toting, but at least they’re softer than regular straw in our hands. I’m also a fan of the flat bottom design which ensures your purse stays upright when you set it down.

This tote has such a quirky style, but I’m not convinced of its versatility. The fish accents make it ideal for carrying your towel and togs to the beach or pool. You could probably even use it for shopping trips in summer, but once the weather cools it’s likely to look a little kitsch.

Valentino had the spotlight for the recent star-studded New York premiere of the documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor, which has continued on to open in several other major cities. Now it’s Chanel’s time to shine … or at least movie star Audrey Tatou’s turn at fashion film fame.

The French actress, who plays the lead role for the much-buzzed-about Coco Avant Chanel, cut quite a fashionable figure in a black-and-white floral bustier dress at the film’s premiere Monday night. The movie opened in Paris at a Champs-Elysees theater to positive reviews, including much praise for Tatou’s performance. One reviewer even raved about how the star “carries the film on her shoulder”.

The Chanel fashion is, of course, one of the other stars of the film, which highlights the early part of Coco’s life before her ascension to legendary status. Coco Avant Chanel will open to the public in France on April 22. No word yet about a U.S. premiere, but we can keep our fingers crossed!

The Marc by Marc Jacobs latest spring collection is full of vivid colors and interesting textures. This poppy red Puckered Mouse Birdie with its embossed finish is a fantastic example of the designer’s fun fashion sensibility combined with some of the season’s biggest trends.

When you inspect the soft leather material, you’ll see that the texture is actually made up of the Marc by Marc Jacobs logo letters jumbled up. I like the fact that it’s somewhat subtle, which is saying a lot for the designer, but still has personality with the unexpected texture.

The rounded satchel shape is a flattering style and lends itself to an ample interior compartment. The Birdie handbag also has exterior storage with side pockets which close with chic silver push-locks.

This relaxed Puckered Mouse embossed bag has an elasticized top that calls to mind just a bit of 1980s glam. Fear not that the elastic top won’t keep things inside secure. There’s a hidden magnetic closure to hold everything in. A fun floral print lining adds a dash of spring and finishes it off perfectly.

Elie Tahari offers his take on the popular turnlock satchel with the Tamar.

The richly textured pebbled leather is chic and stylish, but I can’t say the same for the turnlock front pocket. It should be an elegant addition, but its size makes it look a little gaudy. The black finish helps to tone things down, but it also means the fastener lacks the chic style we’ve seen on Coach’s Hamptons Vintage Hobo or Marc Jacob’s Totally Turnlock Quinn.

What it lacks in looks it makes up for in practical design. The Tamar is large without being overwhelming thanks to its convenient triple compartment design. A large zippered pocket in the center divides the interior into separate sections to make organization a breeze. The side walls amp up the storage options with a zippered pocket and three handy slip pouches.

The rolled straps feel heavenly in your hands, but they’re too short for over the shoulder carrying. It won’t be an issue in the office, but I’d probably leave the Tamar at home for those long shopping sprees.

A few months ago we told you that director Sofia Coppola was stepping out from behind the camera to design a fashion line for Louis Vuitton. We saw a sneak peek last year, and now Sofia’s stylish line is taking Asia by storm.

Sofia was inspired to take a foray into fashion when she couldn’t find her ideal shoes or purses. When Louis Vuitton offered to help her create her own pieces, she did what any girl would and jumped at the chance. The result is a collection that combines classic colors with spacious, practical designs.

Sofia said she was inspired by her idol Lauren Hutton when reinventing Louis Vuitton’s slim-lined signature clutch.

“Lauren Hutton is one of my fashion heroines. I had her in mind when we did the Monogram pochette,” Sofia explained.

It’s just one of a selection of smaller clutch purses, which are designed to hide in your day bags until the sun goes down.

Sofia has a personal attachment to all her pieces, but does have a few special favorites.

“I especially love the navy day bag, and asphalt gray suede day bag …  and the black pochette with gold piping and matching shoes,” she said.

It sounds like there’s a lot to love about this timeless collection! More international locations are set to follow the Asian release.
