Hype has reinvented the tote bag with the ultra-cool Georgina.

The traditional box shape is gone, replaced with sexy relaxed curves. The Georgina’s soft slouch is toughened up with plenty of gleaming silver-tone hardware and edgy contrast stitching. In some ways I feel like the Georgina’s a little overdone. With a long drawstring and buckled belts up top, then shiny zippered pockets on the sides, I’m not quite sure where to look. But it all adds up to an edgy visage in keeping with the taste for all things 80s.

Those punk rock looks make the Georgina’s color palette a little confusing. Black always makes a dramatic statement, but the other options are a little bland. White seems too prissy for the bag’s bad girl style, and the pale petal pink and celadon green aren’t much better.

The options are much better inside, with plenty of pockets to help us survive the urban jungle. There’s plenty of space to spread out too, helping the Georgina make the transition from day to night.

At $350 I wouldn’t call this tote bag cheap, but it does offer today’s retro rock style for a lot less than Alexander Wang.

Kate Spade and Kenneth Cole aren’t just selling amazing handbags at their new retail outlets in Manchester, Vermont. They’re also helping to save the planet.

The side-by-side stores share a revolutionary heating and cooling system which uses geothermal technology.

“We’re doing our part. We as a company would like to make ourselves more sustainable and we hope other companies follow,” said Ben Hauben, owner of local development firm Vanderbilt Equities. “And some of these companies like the idea because they can say they’re supporting green.”

It cost between $70, 000 and $80, 000 to outfit the fashion boutiques with the environmentally-friendly technology, but the potential to eliminate fossil fuel makes the investment all worthwhile.

Vanderbilt Equities hasn’t simply jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon. The firm has been creating greener buildings for the last 20 years.

“Overall we haven’t really waited for anyone to step to the plate. We stepped to the plate first,” explained Vanderbilt Equities co-owner Lana Hauben.

Now if only Kate Spade and Kenneth Cole would ditch the leather and start creating eco-friendly accessories, we could enjoy a truly green fashion shopping experience!

Harveys has been creating its unique seatbelt bags for more than a decade. The label recently teamed up with Los Angeles artist Gary Baseman to give their purses a brand new look.

Honestly, these are the same old seatbelt handbags, with woven seatbelts creating the durable and eye-catching design. Baseman’s artwork makes this messenger look a little edgier and more youthful than many of the brand’s designs, but that woven exterior is unmistakable. Of course that will please the label’s fans, but it’s not likely to win them any new ones.

Gary Baseman’s cheeky artwork is also boldly showcased on the interior lining. There are plenty of slip pockets around the side walls, but if you’re looking for security you may be disappointed. I can’t fault the size though, which offers plenty of space for lugging textbooks to school or office essentials to your workplace.

The shoulder strap is also made from a seatbelt for your comfort. It’s also completely adjustable, allowing you to get just the right fit for cross-body or shoulder carrying.

It’s hard to fault this Harveys messenger bag: it’s durable and casually cool. But I’m a little incredulous about the price. This Gary Baseman bag retails for $100 more than a regular Harveys messenger. I can understand the price hike if this was a one-of-a-kind artwork, but it seems a little costly for a mass-produced bag.

Fast Company has named the 100 most creative people in the business world, and it’s a list that features some of our favorite handbag designers.

Top of the pops is Stella McCartney, who comes in at number 13 for her “responsible luxury” fashion items. She’s set the bar for eco-friendly, animal-friendly fashions, and the other labels can only try to keep up. Her fashion items and accessories use no leather or fur, and are made from entirely organic materials. It may not be easy being green, but Stella makes it look effortless.

Jil Sander comes in at number 24 for her deal with Uniqlo. This unexpected collaboration has seen the German designer reinvent herself, taking her from the master of minimalist couture to the queen of casual cool.

Everything Marc Jacobs touches turns to gold, so it’s no surprise to see the designer rounding out the fashion trio at number 42. Marc makes the list for being “hip, but not inaccessibly hip.” His luxury line sits comfortably alongside his cheep and cheerful Marc by Marc Jacobs collection, bring fashion to the masses even in the face of the economic crisis.

For the last few seasons fringe has been absolutely everywhere. Like many trends, it started on the streets. Hipsters and modern hippies everywhere insitgated a return of the classic Minnetonka moccasin, and it took off from there. Well, it has finally made it to Fifth Avenue.

But this Jimmy Choo Sky Shoulder Bag takes everything you usually think of when you see suede fringe (70’s rockers, Pocahontas, to name a few) and turns it upside down. Not that the bohemian element is totally missing, it isn’t. It’s just been classed up considerably. And to be honest, I’m not sure that’s a good thing.

To make black leather and fringe palatable Uptown, the fringe has been cut much shorter than you see on boho styles. The problem is that is comes off looking kind of cheap, which the bag certainly isn’t, at $2,295 retail.

The shape of the bag is nice and simple, and the rolled leather handle is sleek and sturdy. I even like the hardware. I don’t particularly think that gold was the best choice, as it only enhances the sort of cheesy look of the bag, but in any case, it’s half obscured by the logo bracelet, anyhow.

I really want to like this upperclass take on edgy beatnik style, but I don’t. I just can’t get over the shoddy look of the material.

Famed shoe designers Casadei has proved once again that it knows more than just kitten heels and Mary Jane’s. This small hard framed handbag is a great work of Italian craftsmanship, and definitely a bag that they should be proud of.

This little leather clutch is a true homage to all things seventies, from the shiny deep chestnut leather with its retro crocodile skin design, to the hard edged angular shape. Even the detailing is seventies, with pearlized clasps. It truly is a work of art!

The purse is pretty spacey for what is a very minimalistic clutch. Unfortunately they don’t include any interior pockets for personal bits and pieces; you will just have to hope that you don’t spill the contents whilst you are out!

Other than this, I really like the vintage styling of this bag. Even better, this retro purse is currently on sale on Amazon, with an astounding discounted price of $265! That’s a saving of over a thousand dollars, definitely a recession proof purchase!

Last summer, popular American brand Ralph Lauren teamed up with the East Hampton Historical Society to assist the organization’s ongoing restorations of historical areas, one English Colonial farmstead in particular. Now the brand is reinforcing their support with a small line of clothing and accessories devoted entirely to the society.

It seemed like an odd pairing of fashion and farms at first, but it does make sense that Ralph Lauren would choose to throw money at an area that basically epitomizes their signature style. The Hamptons have that easy American, laid-back but always chic vibe that describes the designer’s items as well.

The Ralph Lauren/EHHS collection will include t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and a canvas tote proudly displaying the society’s trademark logo. The handbag, shown here, isn’t your typical designer’s charity tote.

In fact, if I didn’t know that the historical society actually exists, I’d probably assume that the tote was simply inspired by a vintage logo. To be quite honest, I’d consider buying it either way. However, it’s nice to know that 100% of the proceeds go to something more beneficial than lining the pockets of the fashion world execs.

Ralph Lauren’s East Hampton Historical Society collection will be available soon in select stores in the area and online.
