The pale wood of the bag is polished to an almost plastic-like shine, set off by the opalescent glow of three-dimensional mother of pearl designs on the front and back of the clutch. If you look closely each shell piece is carved and individually placed onto the bag.

Clearly, there’s no two ways about it, this clutch looks kind of like a box – complete with hinged opening. If you like it as a box, it might make a nice jewelry box or travel piece. And sure enough it looks like a box, albeit a luxuriously-lined box, once you open it as well.

This bag would set off a summery, boho-chic looks well but it’s certainly not the kind of purse that will go with everything. Think carefully when planning an outfit around this showpiece.

A charity auction involving fashion and celebrities is certainly nothing new. We’ve seen them benefit the Sir Elton John AIDS Foundation and even Global Giving relief efforts in Italy.

Celebrities always seem to jump right in when this sort of thing comes around, whether it’s for the publicity or simply a big heart. Well, this time the fashion and the proceeds are for men. Yes, women will pay ridiculous amounts to get a Ferragamo bag previously owned by Eva Longoria Parker, but the men deserve their own charity events, too.

Manbagcompany.com has teamed up with some well-known (and some really offbeat) celebrities to benefit the Prostate Cancer Charity, a UK-based organization that works to fight prostate cancer through support, research, and more. Some of the celebrities involved on the project include Ricky Gervais, Alan Carr, Jade Jagger, Twiggy, Ben Shephard, Depeche Mode, Tom Baker, and Jimmy Choo.

Each man bag has been either hand-drawn, painted, or stitched by the celebs making each one completely original and unique. Yes, I’d definitely describe Ricky Gervais’ version with a cartoon drawing of one of his Flanimals as original … very original.

I’m all for the trendy studded look on handbags as long as the result isn’t too western. Not that there’s anything wrong with the cowgirl style, but it’s just not my personal taste. When metallic studs are added for an edgy look, however, I generally like the result.

Well, those who agree with me are in luck this year with the plethora of studded handbags that have appeared in so many different styles and from nearly every brand out there. It didn’t surprise me, then, to find that B. Makowsky has hopped on the stud bandwagon with his Taipei collection.

This series of bags includes a tote and two differently sized hobos. The smaller hobo, shown here, is a great mid-sized purse when you don’t need to carry more than a normal amount of items.

The thing I probably like best about the Taipei hobo is that hardware doesn’t overwhelm the design but it is significant enough to stand out as a feature. In each row of studs, the sizes vary, graduating from either small to large or vice versa. It’s not something I noticed immediately, but it’s the kind of detail I love to discover upon closer inspection.

If this deep brown color isn’t your cup of tea, the Taipei Hobo comes in quite a few other options including bright red, light brown, sage green, and a black that has more of a rock-and-roll vibe when combined with the silver studs. Each one is made from soft leather and is lined in leopard print material, two B. Makowsky signature features. This medium hobo handbag retails for $228.

I have already admitted to my distaste for Juicy Couture. But, I have to admit that I don’t hate this handbag. I don’t absolutely love it, but it’s a sure step up from bubblegum pink terrycloth.

I’ll even go as far as to say that I love the shape of this bag. Yes, I love it. I love that this clutch is big enough for day and has this super adorable handle that makes it easy to carry. I love the summer white and goldtone hardware. And the thing is that I don’t hate a single one of the quirky details. But all of them together? Ick. Overdone.

The faux patch pocket on front with the braid detail would be adorable if it weren’t for the logo buckle strap. And vice versa. This bag needs a little more creamy expanse of leather and a little less, well, stuff hanging from it. 

Which is why even though I don’t hate this bag, I still don’t trust Juicy Couture as a line. Why does every inch of every accessory need to be covered in decoration? What is there to hide? Shoddy, third world craftsmanship? Yep, you guessed it. Made in China.

Charles L Thomas combines contemporary details with vintage touches to create the Kathy. Designers need to take such risks to craft something original, but I think the label may have missed the mark here.

Rather than appearing revolutionary, the Kathy just looks a little confused. Belted accents typically add edge, but with so many here I think they lose their impact. The small studs pop against the pearly leather finish, but those contemporary details seem at odds with the vintage ball clasp.

While the Kathy may superficially be a bit of a mismatch, the design is at least practical. A plethora of pockets inside and out give girls plenty of places to stash their essentials. The dual straps are rolled for comfort, and just long enough to sling over your shoulder or hold by hand. The base is also flat, so you can sit the Kathy down and forget about it.

The Kathy may not be the prettiest leather purse I’ve seen, but at $389 it is reasonably affordable. If you prize practicality and price over flash, that may be enough to sway you.

Bulgari serves up a slice of pop art with this cute retro clutch.

The luxurious black Italian silk finish features a bold geometric print with white and yellow boxes. The Bulgari logo sits inside each square, a detail which looks a little cluttered to me but is bound to please fans of the brand. The design has a minimalist screenprinted vibe, which is both retro and right on trend.

The interior is lined with white leather, a chic choice but one that’s bound to show battle scars in time. Like so many clutches you won’t have the space to carry much inside, but you will need to worry about errant lipstick stains and car key scratches.

This purse has a bold abstract style which would look equally at home with a black cocktail dress or a dark pair of denims. It’d be an ideal everyday clutch, if only the fabrics weren’t so fragile.

Stella McCartney is known for creating cool downtown styles for cool downtown girls. Nothing fussy or overwrought, just streamlined designs that can be worn regardless of trends. That’s what she’s known for, but this particular bag is not exactly screaming “cool” or “downtown”. 

This bag isn’t screaming at all. In fact, it might actually be yawning, or muttering under its breath like some withering old ninny, which is exactly what it reminds me of. Seriously, I am the first person to adore kitschy touches on high style designs, but give me the high style first, please.

This clutch is a serious disappointment. I mean, it isn’t exactly offensive or anything, but it is seriously boring. And, dare I say, completely irrelevant to what’s going on in fashion or culture? I think it’s supposed to be going for some sort of uber-girly, florals meet rhinestones in a speakeasy sort of vibe, but I’m really not sure.

The champagne colored clutch is simply shaped, and would have been acceptable, but it looks as though someone attacked it with a beadazzler or a hot glue gun or something. The floral patterns are uninspired, and the color palette is muted to the point of being blah.

All this for only $995? What a deal, people. My advice to you, if you happen to have an extra grand lying around, is to wrap some rubberbands around those bills and throw them in a coffee tin. At least cash will still be worth something in a few months (hypothetically speaking), unlike this poor excuse for a designer handbag.

Though rumors of fashion great Karl Lagerfeld leaving his post at Chanel have just barely surfaced, the design house has already emphatically denied the claim.

The suspicion began buzzing when Lagerfeld supposedly failed to renew his contract with the company. It was also rumored that Lanvin’s creative director Alber Elbaz would replace the current king of Chanel, while ex-Nina Ricci employee Olivier Theyskens would take over at Lanvin.

New York Magazine took it upon itself to ask Chanel and Lanvin about the claims and received a resounding negative to all rumors involved. I’m not sure how the original rumor of Lagerfeld’s lack of contract negotiations took off, but I’m still curious whether or not there’s some morsel of truth in the matter. After all, despite Karl’s feisty personality and work ethic, he is in his seventies now and could be close to retirement.
