They say one man’s trash is another’s treasure, but it’s almost certain that the person who donated a Betty Boop purse to a Goodwill store in Kettering didn’t realize the rare gem they were giving up.

The jewel-encrusted minaudiere was one of only 2,500 handcrafted by Kathrine Baumann Beverly Hills. The designer is a favorite with stylish celebs including Madonna, Cher, Jennifer Aniston, and Brooke Shields.

“Someone recognized right away that this purse was very unique,” said Mari Jo Sellers, marketing/communications specialist for Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley. “We have a process whereby anything deemed valuable or collectable is sent to headquarters and processed there. Most of those items go to shopgoodwill.com but because the purse had a collector’s number on it, we decided to harness the power of eBay.“

It’s anyone’s guess how much this limited edition purse will fetch, as the designer’s regular accessories ordinarily cost thousands. If you’d like to add it to your collection though, click here to find it on eBay. But be quick, there’s only a little over a week to get your bids in!

Kathrine Baumann Bags on eBay

Well, it’s really not shocking anymore to hear about a retail store closing. Even though some labels are thriving despite an overall lack of income in the fashion industry, many others are feeling the crunch.

The latest brand to shut down a location is Juicy Couture. The company made the decision to close its ritzy spot on New York City’s legendary Madison Avenue due to high rent and low sales. Company president Edgar Huber elaborated:

“The Madison location became a neighborhood store, not a high-traffic store. It was never extremely strong for us. It’s important to have a store on Madison. It’s prestigious, but $2 million [in rent] is too high. Our average transaction is not as high as our neighbors.”

Wow. Even for a popular brand like Juicy, two million for rent has to hurt. I’m guessing that Madison Ave’s abundance of other empty stores had something to do with the decision, too.

At least the labe’s keeping its Fifth Avenue location open for now. I’d imagine it won’t vacate that one unless things are really bad. Here’s hoping that we won’t see that any time soon.

When I think of Kate Spade, fringed leather isn’t exactly what comes to mind. In fact, it’s probably one of the furthest things from what I’m thinking, which is usually adjectives like classic or sophisticated.

That’s why I had to blink a few times before believing that this flashy, fringey number was indeed a Kate Spade original. It’s not that bright colors are out of the ordinary for the designer. She’s been known to use shocking shades of orange, green, pink, and other unsubtle colors. No, the deep turquoise blue isn’t surprising; it’s the swishy, snazzy design that throws me off a bit.

That’s not to say that I don’t like it, though. It makes me think of a sexy samba or a flapper-style tap dance. Being a former dancer myself, I can’t help but associate the fringe with dance costumes. Combine the movement of the tote with the modern style, and you’ve got a seriously unique look.

Because of the visual impact of the fringe, I like how Kate Spade kept everything else on the Yuma Ida simple. There’s a limited amount of hardware thanks to the simple style of the cutout handles, which might not be terribly practical but are certainly chic. Even the logo plate is made from a matching turquoise leather square. This fun and fashionable Ida tote retails for $395.

Kooba Handbags on eBay

I’m not sure whether artist Bernard Villemot was inspired by Bally or if the fashion brand asked for an advertisement, but Villemot’s “Bally Blonde” is a striking piece of bold but simple art. The vintage ad dating back to the 1980s is only a hint of the label’s long history since Bally began over 150 years ago, but it is indicative of the simple, chic style of the brand.

I sort of wonder who decided that “Bally Blonde” would look fabulous printed on a tote. It seems an interesting choice to me since I’m used to seeing high-priced but gorgeous luxury handbags of ostrich and suede. However, it’s a whimsical side of the label that I’m glad to see.

Without the print, there’s nothing exciting about the Venusia. It’s mostly just a black nylon tote with patent leather handles. However, slap on a piece of art, and you’ve got something special. I don’t usually expect the brand name to be plastered on Bally’s handbags, only the occasional subtle logo print. It is on the original art, though, which makes the Venusia’s display of it make sense.

The aforementioned subtle logo print appears on this tote by way of the interior jacquard lining. You’ll also find your standard zippered pocket inside as well. The sides are cinched in with patent leather belts giving the Venusia bag a pretty a-line shape. This Bally tote retails for $285.
