B. Makowsky seems to have a penchant for naming their handbags after major cities, like the Maui, Los Angeles, and Florence. I’m not sure what exactly about this particular tote called to mind the Bahamas, but Nassau is the name it was given.

Interesting name choice aside, the Nassau tote is actually a great handbag to consider. There are some first-rate qualities to it that mark it definitively a B. Makowksy style and give it that designer touch.

The first thing that draws my eye, especially in this vachetta brown color, is the crocodile embossing on the leather. It is unusually notable to me because of the size of the, for lack of a better description, croc-printed squares. I like the drama that feature adds to the design.

That’s not the only bold, dramatic detail, however. Like many other B. Makowsky handbags, the Nassau tote has large, prominent hardware that catches your eye but doesn’t take over the style.

Last but not least, this bag is wonderfully practical when you glance at the signature leopard-print interior. The inside of the large tote is separated into three compartments for ideal organization with many pockets for smaller items. The stylish and functional designer purse retails for $318.

All experienced handbag fans will know that to purchase a purse with an original and unique design, you have to spend a reasonable amount of money. After all, even if you do manage to get a bargain piece with high style levels, it will likely have broken by the time the next party season rocks around.

This glossy black patent clutch from Kenneth Jay Lane features just the sort of unexpected, quirky and utterly desirable shape that handbag shoppers spend so much time search for.

In a strangely teardrop silhouette with a flat and blunt top, this evening bag with its long strap catches attention easily. It isn’t jam-packed it with features either (so no multiple outer pockets, I am afraid), so the good looks are down to the flat black leather and nothing else. It is nice to see someone who doesn’t try and overload their product with bits and pieces, instead leaving the artwork to speak for itself.

That said, the wonderful clean elegant lines of this compact purse are spoilt somewhat when using the optional cross body shoulder strap, which clings the design to your body and looks rather strange. Functional, perhaps, but I wouldn’t choose to use this feature. Instead, I would keep it as a clutch, holding onto the retro flat handles and letting the diamante clasp do the introductions for me. This is great, as long as people don’t look to close and realize that, oddly, the clasp is shaped like a little animal!

Of course that doesn’t buy real leather, but it does buy the kind of style you’d expect to see in Ms. Hersh’s Hollywood boutique.

The HollywoodIntuition line is in Target stores across America. It will be available until spring 2010, if stocks hold out that long!

The season’s latest it bags inspire envy, but when it comes to laying money down most of us are more likely to splurge on a classic carryall like the Kansas than the latest fad.

It may not make a lot of waves, but the Kansas is the kind of bag you could carry to work, drinks with the girls, and dinner afterwards. It’s stylish but not cutting edge. After all, basic black leather and a dash of silver hardware will never go out of style.

The design is contemporary without pushing the envelope. Belted accents run from the shoulder straps down to the base. A little slouch makes the Kanvas look relaxed, but stops short of appearing sloppy. The Lanvin charm is more than an aesthetic touch, giving us a convenient place to hang our keys so they’re always on hand.

It’s not just the Kanvas’ conservative appearance which makes it an office favorite. It’s also cleverly designed, with a large center compartment dividing the bag into three sections. Your cell phone has a place in the sole smaller pouch, but I’m not sure where you’ll put your iPod or Nintendo DS!

A purse boasting this heritage and style never comes cheaply, so it’s no real surprise that the Kansas clocks in at $2030. Thankfully though, unlike similarly priced it bags, you won’t have to replace it any time soon.

More details have come to light about Coach’s Reed Krakoff line. The collection, named after the brand’s creative director, is all about luxury fashion items.

It’s a curious move considering the current economic climate, but Coach’s chief executive Lew Frankfort insists it’s “a perfect time.” He explains that consumers are rethinking where and how they shop.

“We believe the Reed Krakoff label will define new American luxury, which has a distinctive aesthetic at an attractive price point,” Mr. Frankfort said.

The Reed Krakoff range will include luxury clothing, handbags, jewelry, and accessories. It will be sold in a select number of stand-alone stores, boutiques, and specialty stores. The company seems determined to separate the luxurious Reed Krakoff line from Coach, as it will not be available in Coach stores.

Creating a new luxury brand seems like a risky venture in a global recession, but I suppose nothing innovative comes without a gamble, does it?

The Love Candela could only come from one fashion house. It has all the hallmarks of Gwen Stefani’s style empire, L.A.M.B.

The velvet stripes which run down the center of the bag and around the base are a L.A.M.B trademark. Here tan signature print clashes with the soft red leather, giving the purse a color-blocked appearance. If you’d prefer a more unified look, the Love Candela is also available in black on black. A gold-plated “L” sitting proudly in the center of the stripe is another elegant pointer to the brand.

Inside the striped faille lining is highlighted with a smattering of gold letters. This is clearly a brand who knows what its fans want, and its more L.A.M.B. logos! Yet the label stops just short of obnoxious. The signature printed stripes are subtle. The logo plate is elegant. And the lining knows just how many letters is enough.

The Love Candela is a large bag, but I probably wouldn’t put it in the oversized category. The dimensions are generous though, so you’ll have no trouble carrying your favorite novel on the train or a wallet busting at the seams. Pockets of all kinds line the side walls, providing much needed organizational assistance.

The long handle makes it so easy to grab and go, which is just what busy girls need!
