It’s crafted from superior fabrics, yet this purse falls short for me. Honestly, it looks like the sort of kitschy design we’d see on a Bridget Jones Christmas sweater!

InStyle’s fun and informative list of the “Best Bags for Fall” includes a veritable plethora of handbag-toting celebrities showing off some of the most current styles for the upcoming season.

The list is fairly comprehensive encompassing nearly every recent, popular handbag trend I can rattle off in one sentence. This includes everything from design details like ruffles and studs to other features like silver color, snakeskin, and chain straps. Oh, and evidently satchels and oversize clutches are big for the season as well. I’m not sure they really ever went out of vogue, especially satchels, but I suppose they might be even more prominent this fall.

I can’t say I’m particularly surprised by anything on InStyle’s list, but it’s fun to see which stars are wearing what styles. I’ve already seen the pictures of Jessica Alba sporting her Tod’s snakeskin tote, but Heidi Klum’s edgy studded and fringed large tote was new to me. Of course, the designer labels are prevalent on this list full of stars. Familiar names and trend-leaders like Rebecca Minkoff, Prada, and Dolce & Gabbana all made an appearance.

There are some things that are OK in modern society, and some things that aren’t. Leather, for the majority of the market, is OK. In a similar vein, eel skin shoes and handbags are acceptable to modern values, whereas fur … fur is not. With so many alternatives for real fur, many of which are just as soft, it is generally considered pretty bad form to opt for fur over faux.

Don’t get me wrong. I am aware that fur is soft, and luxurious, and comfy. This ranch mink hobo isn’t stylish, but it is a status symbol for those who rank fur above all else, and who treasure its expensive form. I can even understand the acceptance of old fur before anyone knew better, which does seem to make sense. New fur, however, doesn’t fit in here.

Of all the people on the fashion circuit, however, the most frequently seen faces are that of the PETA activists and animal rights campaigners. Not only would a mink handbag give them a heart attack, but it doesn’t go down well with the fashion community.

All in all, even if this mink handbag was the most beautiful handbag in the world, and not a strange lumpy behemoth, it simply doesn’t make sense to spend nearly $800 on something that could be bought much cheaper minus the fur.

Patchwork isn’t always a handbag design feature that I love, but the look can be stunning when it’s done well. Without a doubt, some of my favorite patchwork leather bags come from designer brand Miu Miu.

The price range of Prada’s younger sister company isn’t for everyone, though. Although Steve Madden’s line of handbags certainly can’t compare in quality to Miu Miu’s, the price tags are much more comfortable for the average female shopper. This patchwork Peace of Mind hobo is certainly attainable for most budgets with its under-$100 cost.

The chevron-shaped pattern of the patchwork is interesting and a great visual feature for the purse. I like how the muted gray and brown blends well with the black color but creates enough contrast to showcase the shapes. This is a great way to incorporate a unique pattern into your wardrobe without feeling like you’re going overboard. It’s perfect for women who prefer an understated look combined with interesting detail.

Like Miu Miu’s leather patchwork, this Steve Madden synthetic version is a modern take on the design style. The long single strap is in proportion with the hobo bag’s large size. The Peace of Mind’s open interior is great for stuffing with all kinds of everyday items with some space leftover for extras.

Etienne Aigner is celebrating its 60th anniversary with the relaunch of many retro handbags.

When the brand began, the company’s namesake began making belts from a single shade of burgundy leather. As a young designer, he reasoned that it would be cheaper to work with just one shade. The label branched out from belts to other accessories, and burgundy leather became its signature.

The Vintage Redux line features a handful of handbags originally designed in the 1960s and 1970s. Ever since Alber Elbaz took over at Lanvin, the label has been getting a lot of attention. It is one of the oldest couture houses in Paris, of course, but the way he has revitalized the brand really speaks to modern women.

This feminine shoulder bag has a classic shape and a few modern twists. The material is a wrinkled taupe lambskin that is sumptuous to the touch and pleasing to the eye. It gives this totally Upper East Side bag a little something different.

And speaking about something different, check out the fabulous chain and ribbon combo on this bag! I am really digging the way the taupe sets off that little bit of deep blue. And the clasp on the front looks so natural and perfect, just a little geometric twist to offset the softness of the material, I can’t imagine the bag without it.

This looks like the sort of thing that Blair Waldorf would carry to class, but, personally, I think I’d find a way to take it everywhere!
