Taiwan-born Linda Wong has combined her love of the planet and fashion in her handbag label, Canopy Verde. The brand offers practical, environmentally friendly, and stylish purses.

The label was a labor of love for the new mom, in more ways than one. In fact, Linda was finalizing details of her website launch while in labor with her first son Will!

Canopy Verde’s extensive collection features bags of all shapes and sizes. The cute Pomelo and Calamint clutches are ideal for casual evenings out. The oversized Dewberry tote is perfect for moms with its bottle holders and easy-clean lining. The Cassia is the granddaddy of the bunch, with its expansive interior ready for weekend getaways.

The fabric bags are made from a soft blend of organic cotton and bamboo, while the more luxurious ones are crafted from chrome-free leather. All feature OEKO-TEX 100 certified dyes and chemical-free embroidery.

“In creating Canopy Verde, I wanted to be very thoughtful about any component that was put into the bag as well as the construction methods,” Linda explained. “Special attention was paid to everything down to the lining and the dyeing process.”

The Canopy Verde collection is available in boutiques across the United States and even Australia. The full range is also available at several green e-retailers including Organic Elementz and FairTribe.

They say you should fake it until you make it. If your salary won’t stretch to accommodate authentic snakeskin or crocodile, this embossed Necessary Objects clutch is a charming substitute.

Synthetic isn’t the most opulent material, but I love the way it’s been used here. I’ve seen embossed leather look far less convincing. The combination of snake and croc scales, not to mention mattes and metallics, could easily look tacky. But the complementary colors save it, creating interest without overwhelming. This olive green, pewter, and silver purse is my favorite, but there are a few more combos if this one doesn’t suit.

Pop open the magnetic snap to reveal the playful spotted fabric lining. It’s a fairly basic space, but its length is worth mentioning. This allows you to carry a little more than most clutches might, although bulky items are definitely out. You probably won’t need your wallet though with a slip pocket tailor-made for carrying your cards. Add a small coin purse and you’re good to go.

I’d love to see a shoulder strap for those long nights out, but I’m not surprised there isn’t one. Brands can’t give us the world for a mere $25 after all.

There are book bags, and then there are bags that are books … or rather look like books. That’s what Parisian “It” girl Olympia Le-Tan was aiming for when she created her first handbag collection.

The new line, aptly named You Can’t Judge a Book by Its Cover, features rectangular clutch bags with a hand-knitted exterior inspired directly by some of literature’s classic first-edition covers. This quirky accessories line has everyone covered with 21 pieces ranging from the titles “For Whom the Bell Tolls” to “The Misfits” to “Satan refuse du monde.”

The designer described her inspiration for the collection:

“I was thinking there were all these beautiful books around and they were being forgotten with everybody on the Internet, so I made it so that you can carry them around,” said designer Olympia Le-Tan at her Paris fashion week presentation at the Galerie Véro-Dodat.

Many of Nahui Ollin’s cute candy wrapper purses are for girls who travel light. This Barhandle Satchel shows the eco-friendly designer is just as skilled at working on a larger scale.

Larger is a relative term though. Packrats shouldn’t pick this up expecting a substitute for their well-worn oversized carryall. It’s a medium-sized satchel, but one that probably holds a little less than the average. The woven candy wrappers are surprisingly strong, but you don’t want to test them by overstuffing. Besides, with no pockets to keep the interior organized, extra luxuries will only create clutter.

Like any Nahui Ollin, the greatest drawcard is that adorable candy wrapper finish which makes each one a true original. This floral print is perfect for girls craving spring, while the barcode pattern has a chic monochrome look. The straight leather straps give the Barhandle its name. They look so striking, but they mean you will have to carry this satchel by hand. Thankfully the candy-wrapper fabric is more lightweight than leather or PVC.

The Barhandle has its limitations, but green girls looking to upsize their Nahui Ollin collection will probably find a way to work around them!

Tignanello is a great brand for generally budget-friendly handbags that use some of the most high quality materials possible for its price range. Some of the designs are somewhat simple and not overly exciting, but the brand’s overall style is one that fits two major shopping categories: chic and affordable.

Although Tignanello sometimes throws in interesting color combinations and other details such as the Modern Mix Dome Tote, the Suede Bright Light tote is one of the not super-inspired yet somewhat interesting designs from the brand. I certainly wouldn’t call it cutting edge, but there are some nice features that make it worth a look.

The suede material is great for fall and winter fashion, though maybe not ideal for rainy days. This terracotta orange, which hearkens mental images of changing leaves and pumpkins for me, seems particularly suited for fall. However, it’s not the only option for the Suede Bright Light tote. There’s quite a rainbow from which to choose including red, yellow, blue, purple, green, and black.

The bucket shape of this handbag is practical for daily use and especially convenient when combined with its zippered center divider. Although the silhouette is kind of slouchy, a bottom panel keeps it from falling right over when set down. This suede version of the Bright Light tote retails for a reasonable $129 and is also available in a slightly larger version.

Coach head back to its basic but luxurious roots with this traditional heritage tote.

Whilst Coach is known mainly for its patchwork purses, but I think its signature patterned satchel totes are actually some of the label’s classiest creations. The brand isn’t pushing the boundaries of fashion, but it is creating modern formal bags perfect for both work and play.

This purse in particular seems a cut above the rest. It has a slightly privileged feel, and wouldn’t look out of place at a country club tennis match. Whilst the lemonade is being supped and the weddings arranged, smart bag owners are able to enjoy both the stunning coordinating blue satin lining and the cute Coach logo on the front.

There isn’t much to say about this Coach tote. All in all it is a largely inoffensive but functional bag, with plenty of useful but flashy touches, such as the little name tags and the reinforced corners on the base. You may not make anyone pass out with desire over the innovative design, but its waterproof exterior will definitely do you proud.

American designer Cynthia Rowley has teamed up with surf brand Roxy for a new fashion collection.

The line is set to include Rowley-inspired wetsuits, board shorts, T-shirts, dresses, swimwear, handbags and other accessories. This is Roxy’s first designer collaboration, but early indications are that it won’t be the last.

“Our mission at Roxy has always been to have one foot in the surf world and another foot in the fashion world,” said Randy Hild, executive vice president of marketing at Roxy.

It might seem like a strange pairing, but Cynthia says she loves nothing better than hitting the waves.

“My family and I surf a lot. Just about every weekend in the summer, we go to Montauk, and in the winter we go to the Dominican Republic for long weekends,” she explained. “I love that we have this family activity that we all really enjoy.”

The Cynthia Rowley for Roxy line will launch exclusively at Barneys New York and Paris’ Colette store in March, before being rolled out to Roxy stores and Cynthia Rowley boutiques worldwide. The surf brand may be mixing with the big names now, but it’s remaining committed to its affordable pricing policy. That’s definitely good news for budget-hunting beach bunnies!

It’s hard to believe that fashion labels are already gearing up and getting started on their spring ad campaigns, yet it’s true. Gucci’s poolside Cruise 2010 campaign was just a kick-off to the warmer weather fashion shoots heading our way.

After a recent announcement of model choices, Claudia Schiffer was spotted with Karl Lagerfeld on location in Buenos Aires for Chanel’s spring/summer photo shoot. The team was seen flaunting about classic Chanel get-ups in Buenos Aires areas Monte Grande and San Telmo, although a little rain briefly halted the production. I guess they should be glad it wasn’t a snowstorm.

Although not caught on camera, models Freja Beha Erichsen and Baptiste Giabiconi have also been confirmed for the advertising campaign.

In other spring fashion campaign news, John Galliano announced that recent runway favorite Karlie Kloss will be the star of Dior’s ads for the upcoming season. No word yet on their location, but my bet is on something as balmy as Buenos Aires.

This All Over Studs Flap Over handbag from Melie Bianco has a bit of an equestrian vibe about it, which is a fashion trend I’m currently rather excited.

Although not a traditional saddle bag in its truest definition, this casual hobo’s double buckled detail on the bottom of the front flap definitely reminds me of the style. The handbag’s somewhat relaxed shape is kept in line by the flap instead of looking sloppy.

Following a pattern quite characteristic of handbag fashion right now, the front flap of this Melie Bianco design is covered in small studs varying in size and color. I’m not always a fan of the mix-and-match studded look, but this one I like. It’s not overdone in a way that makes you think it’ll take over an outfit or clash with other studded details you might be wearing at the same time.

The random pattern gives this somewhat simple-looking hobo a contemporary twist. Thankfully, though, the feature does not continue to the back of the purse where it might become too much. Instead, it adds a touch of edginess to the design and leaves it at that.

Of course, the strong exterior does mean that you can’t squeeze that much in the bag, even though it is stretched out! Thankfully it does come with a convenient handle, however,  and for once it isn’t a chain! Lovely!
