Whiting and Davis Crystal Stud Clutch | Decorative Rock Chick Mesh Purse

Posted on: Nov 6

Whiting & Davis knows how to do mesh well. The fashion house knows how to add color, shape, design, and have produced some amazing bags based on its heritage of simple mesh beauties. What always impresses me, however, is the label’s ability to make each purse that little bit different from the last.

This small square clutch is a great example. Using decorative crystal studs, the company has imbued a vintage metal mesh bag with a new lease of life, bringing a hint of rock chick and a certain edge to the little purse.

With those studs added, the clutch somehow becomes something pretty and delicate, yet chunky and over-sized at the same time. Any red carpet outfit would look better with this on your arm, and carrying it is made easier by the delicate chain option. That said, this metal mesh clutch is somewhat wider that you would expect from a elegant purse. Whilst this may be practical, the shape from the side is rater cumbersome and a little disappointing.

As always, Whiting & Davis has produced a bag filled with character and metal expertise. The signature lining is a nice touch, but how much do you need to carry on a night out?!

Necessary Objects Charleze Hobo | Large Structured Synthetic Handbag

Posted on: Nov 6

The hobo has definitely undergone some changes in recent years. Once a crescent-shaped slouchy symbol of bohemian bliss, now it seems that anything goes!

The Charleze calls itself a hobo, but it’s definitely not hippie-chic. There’s a slightly relaxed feel, but this structured synthetic bag with its platform base has none of the slouch we expect from a hobo. The shape is more typical of a bucket bag than a crescent-shaped hobo too. These unexpected features make the Charleze look a lot more sophisticated and versatile. While traditional hobos suit maxi-dresses and casual music festival garb, this would look at home with a winter trench or even your office power suit!

Necessary Objects shows a little personality inside with its fun hand-drawn fashion lining. There’s not a lot of personality shown when it comes to the design though. The zip and slip pockets are perfectly adequate, but they’re nothing to rave about.

It might look uptown cool, but the Charleze is actually made from synthetic. The price reflects that, with this Necessary Objects hobo clocking in at $68. The pewter version has a glamorous charm, but I prefer the wintery appeal of this red bag. Red’s almost regarded as a neutral now, so this tone promises to be more versatile than you’d first think.

More Features of This Necessary Objects Synthetic Hobo

  • Zip top closure
  • Printed plainweave lining
  • Dual shoulder straps with a 4 inch drop
  • Measures 13 x 16 x 5 inches
  • Made in China

Gucci Launches Snowman in Africa Charity Collection for UNICEF

Posted on: Nov 6

Gucci is preparing to launch its fifth annual charity campaign to benefit UNICEF. In the past five years the designer handbag brand has raised almost $7 million to support UNICEF’s efforts in education, healthcare, protection, and clean water.

This year’s collection is inspired by Snowman in Africa, the sequel to the best-selling children’s book Snowman in Paradise. Gucci will sell the book alongside its limited edition charity accessories collection in its retail stores and online. 100% of the book’s retail price, and 25% of the bag sales, will benefit UNICEF.

The accessories available include the large Joy Bag, and the smaller coin purse and wallet. As the name of the collection suggests, the purse’s feature an appliquéd snowman standing in a field of African grasses and wrapped up by a native snake.

The Snowman in Africa goodies will be available from November 16 until December 31. However some lucky celebrities, including supermodel mama Heidi Klum, have already been spotted carrying the range. If her star endorsement helps to boost the profile of this worthwhile collection it can only be a good thing.

Laurel and Sunset Candy Stripe Tote | Oversized Faux Leather Carryall Bag

Posted on: Nov 6

Its name might suggest a bright red and white purse ready for the holidays, but the Laurel and Sunset Candy Stripe Tote is a much more vampish bag.

Instead of the traditional red and white candy combo you might expect, this tote features wide burgundy and black stripes. It might not be very festive, but the pairing is perfect for this wintery weather.

As with most bags at this price point, this tote isn’t made from real leather. But the synthetic does a good impression thanks to its distressed treatment. It may not last as long as the more luxurious fabric, but in the short-term I can’t fault the look.

At just $39.95, this tote delivers all that you’d expect. It’s massive, so you’ll always have enough space for everything you want to carry. There’s a zippered pocket, a cell phone pouch, and an open slip inside to keep things organized. I’d probably appreciate more than this standard configuration to help my essentials stay in order, but in a bag of this price I certainly don’t expect it.

This Laurel and Sunset tote is a good looking tote which will serve you well while it lasts. However at this price, don’t be surprised if it falls apart within a year or two.

More Features of This Laurel and Sunset Synthetic Tote

  • Gold-tone hardware
  • Cotton/nylon blend fabric lining
  • Top zipper closure
  • A single shoulder strap with a 6 inch drop
  • Measures 18 x 13 x 4 inches

Judith Leiber Joins with Breeders’ Cup to Create Custom Handbags for Horseracing Silks

Posted on: Nov 5

Well, I won’t call these new minaudieres a completely unexpected look for Judith Leiber, the designer who has created bags in such strange shapes as parrots, dolphins, and peacocks. However, the teaming up of Leiber with Breeders’ Cup, an organization that hosts championship horseracing events, is still just slightly random to me.

Leiber has joined with Breeders’ Cup to give horseracing fanatics the chance to see the designs on their racing silks transformed into a crystal-studded handbag. Interesting collaboration aside, though, I’m actually really liking the direction that these new bags are taking. There’s a lot of opportunity for some stunning looks.

Each Custom Silks minaudiere begins with an artist hand-painting the racing pattern onto the box followed by the intricate and meticulous addition of crystals over the design. The result, like just about any of Judith Leiber’s bags, is quite stunning.

If you don’t want a custom minaudiere, a hand-beaded minaudiere displaying the Breeders’ Cup’s signature logo is also available. The signature bag is available to purchase for $2,295, while the custom silks minaudieres range from $6,300 to $12,000. Now that’s some serious dedication to the love of horseracing.

Laura Matthews Designs Lambskin Clutch with Nickel Plate | Cobra Patterned Leather Mini Tote

Posted on: Nov 5

It’s officially called a clutch, but this Laura Matthews Designs bag appears much more like a mini tote to me!

Names aside, this lambskin purse is a nice alternative to those ridiculously tiny clutches we’re used to carrying. It comes with space for party essentials and then some, and the leather handle is more comfortable than the popular chain straps we typically see.

Just because it’s comfortable doesn’t make it altogether practical though. If only Laura Matthews Designs had added a few inches to the handle. Then we could have enjoyed the option of carrying the purse over our shoulders or in the crooks of our arms.

The handle isn’t the only feature I’ve got a gripe about. The look rubs me up the wrong way. All the right elements are there. The buttery soft surface of lambskin has proven to be a more alluring alternative than traditional calf leather. The snakeskin texture is right on trend, and not so showy to offend conservative tastes. Yet it doesn’t appear as luxurious as the combination of lambskin and exotic print should. The shiny surface looks a little cheap, and the nickel plate seems simply tacked on.

Laura Matthews Designs brings something different to the table here, but the looks just don’t impress me.

Liz Claiborne Jet Setter Satchel | Practical Faux Leather Travel Bag

Posted on: Nov 5

For most people, travel almost inevitably accompanies the holidays. That’s why every gal should have a reliable weekender-style handbag to carry with her on those unavoidable plane, train, or automobile trips.

Reliable doesn’t have to mean uninteresting, however. On the flip side, chic and stylish shouldn’t always equal an outrageous price. That’s where this Liz Claiborne Jet Setter satchel fits in beautifully. It’s a nice, happy medium for the two extremes.

Though not an enormous travel bag, the Jet Setter satchel is large enough for essentials or to use as a carry-on bag for plane trips. It’s bigger than what most of us tote around for an everyday purse (except for women who adore the overly oversized bag trend, of course), but isn’t so bulky that it becomes difficult to haul around an airport terminal.

There are several exterior pockets ideal for items you need to access at a moment’s notice. The double handles might be expected for this style of handbag, but they’re definitely too short for my practical taste. I’m guessing that the longer carrying strap is much more useful.

This pretty fuchsia color, termed “laurel” by Liz Claiborne, is an unexpected twist for a travel bag and a fun pop of color for an outfit. The faux leather Jet Setter satchel is priced at a reasonable $95.

More Features of the Jet Setter Satchel

  • Measures 16 x 8 x 6.5 inches
  • Double handles with 3 inch drop
  • PVC material
  • Buckled detail on front
  • Removable strap

Nahui Ollin Long Pouchette Clutch | Attractive Woven Sling Purse

Posted on: Nov 5

Nahui Ollin adds a new twist to the old woven bag look with this contrasting bold color closure.

Using a Mayan technique, we are all familiar with Nahui Ollin’s style, weaving pretty contrasting patterns with everyday materials. This particular purse is best in the black and white chequered pattern, where the bold red flap stands in dramatic and effective contrast.

Subtle, this bag ain’t. Inside, that bold palette becomes even bolder, as the materials grower brighter and more vibrant. Personally I always wish Nahui Ollin’s bags had a different lining (red would have been nice), and this bag just shows how chaotic her patterns can get.

That red flap, however, is a lovely addition, breaking up the pattern and making this a much more sophisticated, work-friendly purse than her usual pieces. It also adds a useful functionality, especially as it clips neatly closed. The handle too continues this coordinated theme, making this both useful for slinging over your shoulder, and pretty.

All in all this is a bold and sometimes over-the-top purse, with some nice touches but a certain lack of luxury, and pockets!

  • Available in three vibrant color combos
  • Long shoulder strap
  • Large flap closure

Latico Cris Cris Pocketed Clutch | Small, Soft and Slouchy Functional Wristlet

Posted on: Nov 5

I do like a functional clutch. Of course, sometimes it is nice to have something impractical and ridiculous in your grasp, but a useful and attractive purse can make life that little bit easier to manage!

This Latico Cris Cris clutch combines those two elements, looks and practicality, in one largely successful package. With slouchy roomy pockets both inside and out, and a biker-chic look, this may be one of the best functional wristlets around.

Those exterior pockets are cleverly used as the feature focus of the purse, catching attention and drawing it to the soft slouchy shape and triple-milled leather. They aren’t, unfortunately, closeable; a simple but punky zip would have been an attractive and even more functional addition.

That leather, however, is a bit of a saving grace. Elegant, relaxed and yet strangely edgy, it really is the selling point of this little purse, making it refined yet dangerous. This works best in black; the effect is lost somewhat in the other shades, but that lovely leather quality is retained throughout the range.

All in all, from the wristlet strap to the unexpected floral lining, this purse looks and feels good. Is it as practical as it makes out though? Perhaps not.

More Features of this Latico Pocketed Wristlet

  • Available in four colors
  • Chunk spacious shape
  • Coordinating zip color
  • Floral lining and leather exterior

Italian Handbag House Ronchi Launches Fiit Collection in United States

Posted on: Nov 5

Italian design house Ronchi Bags is preparing to infiltrate the American market with the launch of its new Fiit Collection.

Head designer Carlo Ronchi has grown his brand over three generations. I’m sure American audiences will be just as enthusiastic about his commitment to high-quality Italian leather and craftsmanship. Each purse is made from start to finish in the European fashion capital, and they come with certification to prove it.

The Fiit Collection is further testimony to that heritage, as the name translates to Made in Italy. The bags are crafted in buttery-soft goatskin, crumpled skin, and printed croc leather. Antique gold or gun metal gray hardware complete the luxurious looks. Handcrafted hooks and key-ring attachments add extra practicality to the cotton-lined interiors.

We expect to pay a small fortune for European designs, but that’s not the case here. You can snag this Sofia bag for the bargain price of $435. Ronchi Bags are available now through online fashion store Noblivity.
