Some girls see tote bags as a convenient way to carry their must haves from here to there. Yet others see these accessories, and probably most other things in their life, as status symbol. It’s for these girls that Isaac Mizrahi created the Slouch Tote. You see, anyone else would laugh at the idea of paying more than a thousand big ones for such a simply designed bag.

It may be overpriced, but there’s an alluring level of luxury to be enjoyed here. The leather is incredibly soft, and classic in both sand and brown shades. The traditional shape and unadorned exterior has a quiet confidence about it. This isn’t a bag trying hard to emulate the latest trend. It knows it doesn’t need to. The only accent is the Isaac Mizrahi logo charm hanging proudly from the side.

The regular handles are ridiculously short for a bag of this size, so thankfully a much longer strap can be easily attached. I suppose this gives us the versatility to wear the tote the way we want, but I can’t help wondering: why not just make the handles longer in the first place?

But it seems Isaac Mizrahi wasn’t thinking of practicality when he made the Slouch Tote. Yes, the leather looks lovely, but without any protective feet it might not for very long. There’s no closure either, and without a flat base I worry about items spilling out once it’s set down.

The price and lack of functional details will scare more than a few fashion fans away, but judging by how quickly they’re selling plenty of purse lovers are still prepared to splurge on a Slouch Tote.

Eden is a new American company combining a love of fashion with eco-friendly ethics. Launched in November, the brand crafts tote bags from eco-fi, a polyester fibre made from recycled plastic bottles.

The bottles used are sorted by color and type, then stripped of caps and labels. They’re thoroughly washed, then crushed and chopped up into small flakes. These flakes are melted down to create eco-fi.

“We’re introducing this line of tote bags for two reasons,” explained Jan Verploeg Petsch, founder of Eden bags. “Our primary goal was to impact our environment by using recycled fabric. Our next desire was to help our economy by using U.S. labor and materials.”

Eden is the only American label using completely home-grown recycled PET plastic. That commitment to keeping industry at home extends to the cotton prints and manufacture.

“We could have reduced our production costs substantially if we had gone overseas, but then we’d be part of our country’s problem. We committed to investing into our own labor force.”

The durable totes are ideal for grocery shopping as they can hold up to seven two-liter bottles. You’d need three plastic bags to carry the same amount. The totes fold up to next to nothing so you can stash them inside a larger purse, ready for those emergency grocery dashes. Although with fun designs like this Box Step, I’d be happy to carry them to the markets!

Eden isn’t just committed to the environment. A portion of all profits benefit Feeding America’s Hungry Children, a charity that distributes food and other groceries to hunger relief agencies across the country.

For something fun, feminine, and a little frivolous you can’t go past this Dominique Clutch from Inge Christopher.

The designer is famous for traditional vintage looks, so this unique purse comes a little out of left field. The pretty fabric flowers have a contemporary edge with their pinked edges. I love the look, and think this chartreuse shade is the best to show it off. The blooms just seem to get a little lost in the darker hues: black, blue, and purple. Of course some may argue the chartreuse isn’t very versatile, but I’d prefer to make this clutch the feature rather than coordinating my colors.

Like so many Inge Christopher purses, the structured frame limits storage space. On the flip side though, the vintage appeal it gives is worth a little compromise. Your cards, cash, a skinny cell phone and gloss should easily fit, and who needs to carry more than that on an evening out?

The dainty silver chain is the perfect complement to the metal frame, even if it’s not the most comfortable carrying option. While your shoulders may sting, no doubt you’ll be thankful for it as the night wears on!

The fashion-centered short film seems to be the new preferred marketing ploy of major luxury brands these days. This fact, to me, seems like a good indication of a positive turn-around in the fashion industry’s economy considering that many labels were cutting back on advertising altogether in the recent past.

Dior is just one brand to sign-on a major actress for a short film revolving entirely around one of their handbags. Now Donna Karan’s gorgeous, pleated Eldridge handbag will star alongside equally pretty Christina Ricci in a short titled Four Play, set at the Soho Grand Hotel.

The two-minute film was directed by Jake Summer and, somewhat similar to the recent compilation of Dior shorts about the “New Lock” bag, will feature the actress in various scenarios and moods including situations as a dreamer and a voyeur. In all, the scenarios total four to match the number of ways the Eldridge bag can be worn.

Rebecca Minkoff’s Rocker bag has been spotted in magazines and on the arms of trend-loving celebrities like Lauren Conrad. Even In Style had this small but stylish shoulder bag in their recent list of “Best Bags for the Fall.”

However, there’s one major difference between the Rebecca Minkoff Rocker we’ve seen before and this Eyelet Rocker featured here. Gone are the still currently popular studs to be replaced with much less rocker-esque grommet hole details that cover the entire body of the bag.

The look is still as eyecatching as the studded version considering the amount of gold-toned hardware that fills the purse. It just might not be as “fierce” or edgy as some women would like, though the passionfruit pink color might have a little something to do with that as well.

The zippered pouch design is thin and flat making it easy to hold as a clutch, but you might prefer to use it with the long strap attached in order to carry it around on your shoulder or across the body. The interior is lined with a fun logo and bird printed lining. The price of $300 seems rather steep for such a small and somewhat limited bag, but it’s not surprising given the popularity and quality of the brand.

With Christmas parties and end-of-year dos afoot, you’ll need a clutch purse with a festive feel. This silver Elise purse from Hype might be just what you’re looking for.

Hype combines the luxury of leather with the exotic looks of snakeskin. Silver and snake could have easily appeared over the top, but Hype reigns it in with tiny, subtle scales. These add interest without overwhelming the purse. The diagonal belts are also restrained, with leather-covered buckles a sedate alternative to shiny metal.

The hot pink lining reminds us that this is a purse ready to party. It’s bigger than many clutches, so it’s refreshing to find more than the obligatory open pouch inside. Two open pockets large enough for gadgets and a zippered pouch make organization a breeze.

I’m a little disappointed with the front flap, which doesn’t fold over as neatly as I’d expect. I also feel a purse so large really deserves a shoulder strap, and I’ll bet you’ll feel the same after lugging it around! I could probably live with these little imperfections though.

The silver shade may be too glitzy for some, but with Christmas in the air I think you can get away with a little extra sparkle!

To celebrate the renewal of its contract with Coca-Cola, Ecoist has launched a brand new handbag collection. The eco-friendly purses are made from overrun and discontinued Coke bottle labels.

Since the partnership was formed in 2007, the pairing of Ecoist and Coca-Cola has saved more than a million bottle labels from entering American landfills. In addition, the collaboration has planted more than 5000 trees through its promise to plant one tree for every purse sold.

Each purse features labels hand cut, folded, woven, and sewn together by Peruvian artisans under Fair Trade practices.

“Our vision was to develop a line of environmentally friendly products, ones that inspire consumers to see normally discarded objects as new, beautiful, usable everyday things,” explained Kelli Sogar, Coke’s Global Business Development Manager for Licensing. “Continuing and expanding our partnership with Ecoist allows Coke’s global scale to truly impact upcycling in a meaningful, holistic way.”

This Harmony Hobo from Jessica Jensen seems almost overly simple, yet the minimalist style is incredibly appealing. Instead of adding on excessive details merely for the sake of staying on top of current trends, the Harmony is just a pretty handbag with an easy design.

The soft leather material is equally understated with just a hint of texture that gives the bag a casual, everyday feel. Even the colors available for this hobo are subtle. With the one exception of a patent purple embossed lizard leather, the Harmony comes in neutral shades of taupe, brown, gray, and other versatile colors.
