Here we have yet another over-the-top little purse from the dramatic designer Betsey Johnson.

If you like subtlety and calm patterns, then this little wristlet probably isn’t for you. However, if you like a combination of bright colors and bold shapes, then this may be just the statement piece that you need in your wardrobe.

Whilst this isn’t to my tastes, I am surprised that I don’t actually happen to hate it. I think the soft satin makes the bag instantly classier, and in combination with the gorgeous color combination of yellow and purple it kind of works. Add to this is stylized floral print and zebra stripe background, and this could be a lot worse than it ends up being.

This is a strange purse. The wristlet shape and satin deem it suitable for evening occasions, but the combination of colors will make it difficult to coordinate. Still, if you can make the metallic leather work, then the affordable $38 is worth shelling out.

Lauren Merkin never goes wild with her clutch designs, but she does always produce something with a bit of an edge.

Whilst people are getting fed up with hearing things being described as “edgy”, I have to say that this adjective really applies to the Allie clutch. It is reasonably simple, but the minimalist shape is added to by the rainbow colored zip trimmed edges, and the interesting “stingray” print pattern. Zips always add a bit of a rock chick vibe, and a new type of print is a great way to set a design apart from the generic crowd.

A design feature that has a functional purpose is always appreciated, which is why I have to admit to being a little disappointed by the double flap front. Whilst it could have been a fancy two pocketed interior, the two flaps are actually just concealing one single space.At least this is roomy, and rather beautifully lined to match the luxury price of $250.

This isn’t a trend setter, or a trend follower; Lauren Merkin has created something different.

Yak Pak’s Liberty Bowler is one of those rare handbags that surpasses expectations. When I first laid eyes on it, I thought it was cute enough, and that the design seemed practical enough. I didn’t dislike the bowler, but I certainly wasn’t wowed.

That was before taking the Liberty out for a busy day of errands and shopping. Suddenly this bag that I liked well enough became one that I loved.

My enjoyment started as I packed my bag for the day. I needed my essentials of course, my wallet, lippie, keys, and assorted medications. Then there were the extras, the ones that test many of the bags in my collection. I’d need a magazine to read at the doctor’s office, and my bulky camera to capture this happy snap.

Ordinarily my magazine gets creased and my camera weighs me down, but that wasn’t the case this time. With so many pockets inside and out, the main compartment almost felt bare. The front pocket is cleverly designed, with two smaller slips hidden inside. I’d ordinarily worry about storing my keys inside an open pouch, but it’s so deep that I was sure they wouldn’t fall out.

Slinging the bowler over my shoulder, I couldn’t believe how light it was. In fact, many times during the day I worried that I might have left something important behind! It was much lighter than the chunky leather bags I ordinarily carry, even with my camera inside.

And while the Liberty’s appearance didn’t impress me at first, I grew to love that too. The plaid print is timeless. It could have looked busy with the wrong outfit, but with something neutral like my white T-shirt and jeans it worked really well.

While this Yak Pak purse isn’t the most luxurious in my collection, it’s quickly become one of my favorites.

If you’ve got a short getaway planned, this M. Andonia overnighter may be the travel companion you’re looking for.

This Inked Overnighter couldn’t have more attitude if it tried. Near-naked tattooed beauties lounge provocatively amidst rainbows and colorful patterns. Look closely and you’ll see Swarovski colored crystals nestled amongst the design. Fans of labels like Kathy Van Zeeland and Betsey Johnson may have hoped for more ostentatious bling, but I have to admire M. Andonia’s restraint. There’s just enough sparkle here; the styling stops just before it gets trashy.

The curved trapezoid shape is traditional, almost typical of an overnighter. There’s a reason for playing it safe though. We can cram as much inside this travel bag as its dimensions allow. I can’t help wishing that was a little more though.

As an overnighter, this simple and striking M. Andonia bag performs admirably. But if you’re planning to take a longer getaway, you may want to consider taking a larger and more feature filled bag along.

Echo gives us two great looks with this fun Reversible Tote Bag.

This is a simply styled tote, but its inside-out appeal ensures it doesn’t get boring. After all, once the paisley print loses its charm you can reverse the tote and rock its dotty pattern. These conservative black and white spots have a classic look, while the paisley print is casually retro.

Reversible bags are never packed with features, dependent as they are on working no matter which way they’re turned. The magnetic closure is an unexpected perk though. It works with the massive interior and long, practical straps to satisfy our practical side. The amount of space inside can’t be overstated. This tote is so large you could easily use it for carrying a big, fluffy tote to the beach, a pair of sneakers to the gym, or your groceries home from the supermarket.

The $68 price tag might seem a little steep for such a basic, fabric bag but remember; with the reversible design it’s almost like purchasing two totes in one!

We’ve seen many prominent handbag designers doing their best to help Haiti rebuild after the recent earthquake, but it’s refreshing to see a fashion brand from this devastated country rising again.

In fact, Phelicia Dell’s VeVe Collection is doing so well that isn’t taken her to Florida’s upcoming Miami Fashion Week festival.

Phelicia and her team of 13 employees are currently working overtime to meet the demand for their handcrafted purses. They took just two weeks out after the quake hit, returning to work quickly to help cope with the destruction around them.

“Especially for the workers who were doing the sequencing, it was like therapy for them,” explained Ms. Dell. “Sometimes I’d look at them while they’d work and I could tell they had a lot on their minds. A lot of them lost family members in the earthquake.”

VeVe Collections designs are vivid and colorful, embodying the spirit of the Carribean nation they were made in. You can expect to pay around $250 for the one-of-a-kind bags. They are available at selected boutiques across the United States.

Haiti Bags on eBay

I have a confession to make. While her accessories are undeniably gaudy and kitsch, I have a soft spot in my heart for Mary Frances. This Sea World clutch is a fantastic example of the designer’s over the top accessories.

Mary Frances creates an underwater grotto on this silk purse, with beaded starfish, coral, and a playful seahorse all joining the fun. Some may say the front is a little crowded, and perhaps the purse would have benefited from moving one element onto the more sparsely designed back. But I don’t mind this busy design too much. It’s colorful and creative, more like a work of art than a handbag.

The colorful beaded shoulder strap is just as dazzling as the rest of the clutch; a touch that’s more fanciful than functional. I’m pretty sure the beads won’t feel comfortable on bare shoulders, but I love the way the stones complement the coral on the clutch. Sometimes being pretty is more fun than being practical.

I guess when you carry the Sea World clutch, it’s one of those times. After all, you’re not going to get a lot inside such a tiny purse. The structured frame limits the space we do have, and the slip pocket is frankly quite useless. This purse might be able to handle loose coins and a couple of keys, but that’s about all.

If that lack of practicality irks you, you’ll scoff at the $246 asking price. But if you value this Mary Frances purse as a unique work of art, that price probably doesn’t seem so bad!
