All too often it seems that designers attempt to replicate the classic designs of Chanel with their quilted bags. And why not? These timeless flap purses are still as desirable today as on their initial release. The problem is that invariably the copycats fall flat. So it’s refreshing to see J. Furmani try something new with its quilted bag.

Having said that, I’m not sure this handbag really works. The satiny quilted body reminds me more of Hugh Hefner’s famous smoking jacket than a rich looking handbag. The pearl-like handle is another misplaced attempt at opulence. The spheres are too large to appear elegant, and the tiny chiffon bows that dot the strap seem a bit out of place. It’s also too short for over-the-shoulder wear, and probably not very comfortable to carry by hand. The strap is removable, but this J. Furmani purse seems too bulky to easily clutch.

The soft body would be appropriate for evening wear, so I’m thankful for the space we see inside. It’s definitely more than the average night-time bag affords, which should suit those of us who struggle with tiny clutches.

It may not appeal to everyone, but I’m sure plenty of girls will love this quilted bag’s original sense of style. And they’re the lucky ones, as this J. Furmani purse costs just $24.

The Chat’em might not be the conversation starter its name predicts, but there’s still a certain charm about this Kavu tote. It signals a change in the direction for the brand better known for its hiking accessories. You don’t need an appreciation of the great outdoors to find a place for The Chat’em in your closet.

It’s called a tote, but its dome shape reminds me more of a bowler bag. Whatever you call it, this structured handbag has a softness thanks to its cotton canvas body. The fabric is accented with stripes in your choice of springtime marigold or pink. Pink sounds like an overly girly choice, but when paired with chocolate brown and tan it’s much subtler than I expected.

The cotton canvas makes The Chat’em a lightweight, which is a very good thing because such a large bag could get unmanageable when loaded up. The long wide straps should thankfully make carrying easy, as there are plenty of places to stash your goodies. With pockets in the front and back, and inside too, the biggest challenge is remembering where you put your keys!

The first thing I thought when I spotted this tote is “diaper bag.” It’s got the size, features, and casual style that would see it working well for new mommies, but that’s not its only application. I also imagine The Chat’em would make an excellent gym bag, or a great weekender. Such a versatile bag seems a steal for $40!

Sunchic keeps the rest of the calfskin bag simple to avoid the design getting too overwhelming. I’m thankful for the restraint; this is a purse which pushes the envelope just far enough.

As we’d expect from an Italian label, the Tiebag is made from high-quality materials crafted with great attention to detail. This isn’t one of those novelty purses that will fall apart after a single season. Although as with any unique handbag, it’s up to you whether you’ll get enough wear out of it to justify the price.

Silk Tie Bags on eBay

Hobos tend to suit floaty boho princesses rather than rock chicks, but this Wendy bag from Oryany is one that breaks the rules.

The Italian Cloque surface isn’t as opulent as leather, but I think it’s much more compelling. While calfskin is almost commonplace, the blistered texture we see here is out of the ordinary. It’s almost as if someone took a match to the fabric, scorching it to create all those lovely nooks and crannies. The eye-catching material is given a little luxury with leather trim. But again, don’t think Oryany was predictable here either. Corseted lacing makes sure the Wendy never loses her edge.

The shape too is unusual. There’s not a lot of structure to it, but it’s a far cry from the slouchy crescent shapes of traditional hobos. Oryany fans will recognize it as the same shape we saw on the slouchy Jessica tote, right down to the wrapped handle. But where the Jessica was the girl-next-door, the Wendy is a real vixen.

While the looks are what impresses me, Oryany hasn’t forgotten about practicality. The dimensions are generous, and the punchy purple lined interior packed with pockets. The detachable wristlet is another inspired touch; you could tuck it away and use it as a wallet, or carry it solo as a clutch on an evening out.

The appeal of two such striking bags makes the $375 retail price seem quite reasonable indeed.

Tory Burch is the queen of preppy accessories. Lately, she’s been veering off into edgier territory, but the Rayna is definitely classic and classy Tory Burch fare. And, as such it is a lovely, soft-spoken addition to the line.

The brown nubuck has a rich, earthy tone and texture that will go with almost everything. The surface of the bag is smooth and simple, with the only exceptions being the woven straps, which add a little textural contrast. The enamel clasp at top is sleek and fits in well with the understated character of the bag.

Honestly, I think the Rayna is a little underwhelming. Sure, it’s classic and versatile and elegant, but isn’t it just a bit boring? The pinched in frame top offers the slightest amount of stylishness, but it just isn’t enough to keep my attention.

Still, for $595, the Rayna will find a lot of homes. My guess is that they’ll have addresses like the Hamptons and Palm Beach.
