Alexander Wang’s accessories are instant classics. Not in a Chanel or Louis Vuitton sort of way, more in a Blondie or Iggy Pop sort of a way. But his designs aren’t all rock ‘n’ roll with no holds barred. Instead they’re a great balance of elegant and edgy. This Jena clutch is the perfect example.

First of all, the color of this bag is genius. It’s not really brown, and it’s not really gray, which gives it a distinctly pachyderm-colored look that makes it versatile with a lot of wardrobes. Second, the shape of the bag is simply delicious. It’s got all the basic features of a classic envelope clutch, but with gently rounded edges that make it just a little bit different.

Then there’s the zippers. It’s a wonder there haven’t been more envelope clutches with this diagonal zipper design. It looks so intuitively well-balanced, and the exposed zipper patches give the bag a casually crafted appeal.

I really can’t say enough about the Jena. It’s another Wang bag that is sure to spawn a thousand rip-offs.

Feathers, when not overused, can make a beautiful decoration for a little satin purse.

It is the strange pale yellow colored satin fabric that makes the little feathers work so well here. That sherbet shade is the perfect counterpart to the fluffy brown, white and gray of the feathers. The soft ruffles of the bow too continue this great coordination, although I am not sure about how the contrasting diamante sparkles fit with the whole ensemble.

The shape itself is cute as well. The double layer bow is pretty at the same time as being reasonably subtle, a nice change from the oversized bows that have been around all year. Considering the fold-over wallet-esque shape I would perhaps have expected more pockets or compartments, but the simple interior will still suffice for an evening bag.

With a convenient optional handle and range of colors, this is an affordable yet pretty option for a summer wedding.

Three women from Wales are delivering a different kind of vintage handbags with their Si:su label. The unusual moniker comes from the Finnish word for perseverance or strength of will, something the Si:su girls have in spades. Every bag is made in South Wales from fabrics sourced from textile recycling plants within 40 miles of Si:su headquarters to stimulate the local economy and reduce the carbon footprint.

I think Isaac Mizrahi is asking a lot of us to spend nearly $1000 on this bag, but he can because if you love it you won’t find anything comparable for less!

Inge Christopher gives us beads, beads, and more beads with this Celtic bucket bag.

The bucket shaped body is literally covered in thousands of the tiny embellishments, which are used here not just as accents but the main attraction. It’s easy to miss from a distance the swirling Celtic inspired design sewn into the beads, but focus your eyes and this abstract pattern becomes clearer. While this is intended to be the key feature, I’m more taken in by the delicate beaded fringe which hangs from the bottom of the purse. Fringe is typically bohemian, but here it’s elegant and red carpet worthy. What a shame the rest of the bag doesn’t live up to its promise; the safe bucket shape and barely discernible Celtic print just don’t rev my engine in the same way.

It’s a shame, because no one buys an evening bag because it’s practical. It’s sizable enough, but we can’t really take advantage of its dimensions. Loaded up this bag will bulge, ruining your elegant evening look. The beaded strap looks the part, but I expect it to be only marginally more comfortable than a run-of-the mill chain. We could always detach it I suppose, but I’m not sure the style really suits old fashioned clutching.

The clincher for me is the price. At $168 it’s not the most expensive evening bag I’ve seen, but it’s not the cheapest either. And if I’m not bowled over by the style, I demand a bargain.

Eco-friendly handbag label Timbuk2 has spearheaded a charity recycling program to benefit (RED), an initiative which aims to help those affected by AIDS in Africa and stop the spread.

Timbuk2 encouraged its fans to donate their old Timbuk2 bags to the project. More than 100 bags were collected during April. Rather than cluttering up a closet, these handbags will be donated to Community Health Workers in Zambia. They’ll put them to good use transporting medical supplies and other essential items to communities that need them.

This bag mountain, assembled by Timbuk2 worker Adam, gives you some idea of the generosity of participating Timbuk2 fans. I’ve always respected Timbuk2 for its ethical handbag philosophy, but now I’ve got a new reason to admire the brand. Maison Martin Margiela’s streamlined design sensibility and pared-down aesthetic take minimalist style to a whole new level by adding edgy, avant garde touches. This gorgeous gray croc embossed bag is a great example of the line’s signature style.

The sleek rectangular shape is the perfect backdrop for the buttery gray leather, and the leather, in turn, is an amazing canvas for the croc embossing. The bag has a chic, almost briefcase feel that will make it very versatile for day, and the generous size ensures that it will be able to handle almost any woman’s arsenal of daily necessities. Unfortunately, at $1,200, it isn’t really affordable for a lot of women, but it will make a great investment piece for those who can handle the sticker shock.

Cross-body bags tend to be tiny affairs made for carrying the bare essentials when you’re on the go. But why should it be this way? After all, a cross-body style seems made for larger bags that would be difficult to carry by hand. Hype has bucked the trend to create the Roisin.

OK, it’s probably not a perfect purse. The body is genuine leather, but the glazed finish combines with the subtle snake print to create a look which appears a bit cheaper than that. It’s just a little too glossy to be true; I’d easily mistake it for a synthetic if I didn’t know better. Thankfully though this material should last longer than a manmade skin, so if traditional leather is too safe but you still crave quality this could be just your thing.

The Roisin looks a little bulky, but with good reason; this satchel is literally crammed with features. There’s a front pocket under the flap, and another pocket on the back. Look inside the sizable interior and you’ll find a leather trimmed cell phone pouch, a zippered pocket, and two more open slips for gadgets.

This isn’t the most elegant cross-body I’ve seen, but it is one of the most practical. If you struggle to survive on the bare essentials, the Roisin could be your bag.
