Tignanello Glam Hobo Bag | Soft Slouchy Leather Sunshine Yellow Purse

Posted on: Jun 28

Tignanello injects some glamour into the traditional boho hobo with its appropriately named Glam bag. But is it really as stylish as it sounds?

It’s definitely no red carpet diva, but it does have more polish than your average hobo handbag. The buttery soft leather is stunning; it gives the Glam the slouchy silhouette we expect to see but so much more style. The squared off shape is another welcome change from the classic crescent. The look gives the Glam a day to night versatility; while it won’t suit mingling with high society it’s perfectly appropriate for cocktails with the girls or dinner with your main squeeze.

Such a versatile bag needs plenty of space if we’re going to carry it from work to our social engagements, and Tignanello delivers on that score too. Plenty of pockets help make this sumptuous satin lined space very user friendly.

My only concern is the color palette. When I think glamour I imagine sexy black, charcoal gray, or deep blood red. Instead Tignanello delivers white, sunshine yellow, or peridot. These summery hues will work during the day, but many of us will struggle to accessorize them with our evening attire.

freeBird by The SAK Peaced Cross-Body Bag | Casual Quilted Synthetic Burnt Orange Purse

Posted on: Jun 27

The SAK has impressed me yet again with the Peaced, another cute purse from its affordable freeBird label.

While most diffusion lines seem like poor imitations of the big boys, freeBird bags have enough interesting features to make them appealing on their own merits. Here we’ve got a surprising geometric quilted body, which makes a lovely change of pace from traditional diamond stitching. I also like the unusual toggles which hang casually from the removable cross-body strap.

I’m not sure why this strap is detachable though, as the Peaced is far too large for hand-held clutching. That’s especially true if you take advantage of the bag’s ample space. The generously sized interior is packed with a trio of open pouches and a zippered pocket. One of these could no doubt handle your cell phone, but I’d prefer to carry it in the zippered pocket on the back. Here it’ll sit snugly against your body, so set it to vibrate to ensure you never miss a call.

We’re spoiled for choice with the Peaced, which is available in six different shades. They’re not all winners; the pyrite bag is a bit too glitzy, and the bright lipstick pink will only appeal to the girliest of girls. But I do love the summery appeal of the sherbet-toned daisy yellow and burnt orange.

  • Zip top closure
  • Polyester lined interior
  • A signature rainbow dream catcher and wooden bird mandela on a removable key fob
  • Measures 3.5 x 11 x 10.5 inches

Alexander McQueen Faithful Small Leather Satchel | Black Leather Moto Chic Satchel With Zippers And Straps

Posted on: Jun 27

The day Alexander McQueen died was a sad day indeed. Not just because the circumstances surrounding his death were upsetting and tragic, but because the fashion world, nay, the art world, lost an amazing talent. His uniquely tough take on fashion lives on as his legacy.

The Faithful leather satchel is a fabulous example of McQueen’s aesthetic. It’s sophisticated, minimal, and totally rock ‘n’ roll. The smooth leather of the Faithful has an almost greasy look that is obviously biker-inspired, and the subdued silver hardware accents it beautifully without being obvious.

The small straps and buckles on the Faithful are perfectly placed, and all of the zippers open onto functional pockets. Even the fold over flap opens onto a great top pocket that would be perfect for keeping important flat items like your passport.

The combination of straps makes this bag fashionably versatile. Slung over the shoulder or held by hand, either way the Faithful comes off as edgy and tough, but still ladylike. Pair it with anything from a black suit to your teeny-weeniest LBD.

  • 14″ x 9″ x 4″ size
  • 4″ strap drop
  • Lined in black twill

Susan Hoffs Makes Green Bags from Recycled Sailcloths, Kimonos, and Reins

Posted on: Jun 27

An unlikely mix of reclaimed sailcloths, vintage kimonos, and horse reins make Susan Hoff’s surprisingly chic range of eco-friendly handbags. The San Francisco based designer is putting the style into shopping totes with her innovative handbag line.

Hoff’s passion for maritime materials comes from her own love for sailing. She once worked as a sailing instructor, and still has her 100 Tons U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s license.

Her sails are sourced from her circle of boating friends, who are always happy to donate the fabrics when they upgrade their vessels. Other bags in the range are made with soft vintage kimonos, but Hoff’s beloved sails are never too far away. They make sturdy fabric linings for these delicate totes. Reins from the horses that live on her mother’s Midwest farm form the bags’ durable handles.

Susan Hoff’s clean, green handbags are priced between $160 and $350, and are available from her online store.

Tano Tribal Master Messenger Bag | Chic Onyx Black Leather Handbag

Posted on: Jun 27

With a name like the Tribal Master, you might expect this Tano messenger bag to be a mix of ethnic prints and vivid colors. However, in actuality nothing could be further from the truth.

Instead this messenger is a picture of restraint, with glazed onyx black leather and just a smattering of hardware. It’s a different kind of messenger too, with its simple shape making a more elegant silhouette than the traditional flap-over style. In fact, I’m surprised this messenger is called a messenger at all!

No matter what it’s called, this is a well designed purse. Its interior is enormous, but it’s packed with pockets. There’s another pocket on the front too, a real bonus for folks who like to have special items at their fingertips. We also have a few carrying options; the short handle is elegant, while the cross-body strap is perfect when you’re on the go.

At $298, the Tribal Master is well priced for a leather handbag that will happily take you from nine to five, and beyond.

Miu Miu Waxed Leather Cross-Body Bag | Chic Shiny Balloon Bag With Structured Strap Detail

Posted on: Jun 27

There’s something classic about a balloon bag that is irresistible. Because it’s not classic in a brown leather, old lady handbag sort of a way, it’s just a sleek style that has managed to keep returning decade after decade. This waxed leather version by Miu Miu is a great example of what a balloon bag looks like when it’s done right.

The material on this bag is crucial to making it successful. The waxed leather has a great sheen to it without the ultra-gloss of patent leather. Waxed leather is also notoriously durable and water-resistant, so you won’t have to worry about ruining it waiting in the rain.

The straps are what make this bag different from other balloon bags out there. It gives it a semi-structured look that is really unusual in the balloon bag kingdom, and an edginess that takes this classic look downtown. Plus, it’s big enough to use as a schoolbag or an overnight bag, so it can take you from work to the weekend in fabulous style.

  • 17″ x 13″ x 6″ size
  • 13″ handle drop
  • Removable shoulder strap

Marni Leather And Quilted Nylon Tote | Unusual Brown And Khaki Tote With Stud Details

Posted on: Jun 27

I should admit from the get-go that I have mixed feelings about this bag. Marni has traditionally been one of my favorite accessories lines, but lately I’ve been feeling a little bit wishy-washy about the label. Perhaps because bags like this leather and quilted nylon tote are a little wishy-washy in and of themselves.

This bag just doesn’t seem to be able to make up its mind about what style it’s going to be. I think the combination of the smooth, luxe, dark brown leather and the utilitarian khaki quilted nylon could be amazing, but the way it comes together just leaves me with a big fat question mark. Is this bag supposed to be a nod to 90s styles? Some sort of uptown-meets-downtown collision? It’s really too hard to tell.

The shape of the bag is a little odd as well. It calls itself a tote, but if so, it’s sort of been flipped on it’s side, which makes it only okay for toting. That and the dual top handles and removable shoulder strap aren’t really thick enough to support much weight comfortably, should you decide to fill it.

The stud detail is okay, but combined with the other unintegrated design elements, it just looks a little thrown together. This mish-mash of indecision is hardly what I expect for $1,200, particularly from a label that is usually so chic.

  • 17″ x 9″ x 5″ size
  • 5″ strap drop

Rebecca Minkoff Rocker Cross Body | Dramatic Clutch with Oversized Studs

Posted on: Jun 27

Studs, some people say, have been overdone. They are too much of an ironic statement nowadays to still be truly fashionable. However, I think that as long as you find something new to do with them they can still be pretty cool.

This Rebecca Minkoff clutch manages just that: to do something different. That difference is mainly in the relative flatness (most studs nowadays are either pyramid shaped or convex), and in the size. By being far bigger than we are used to seeing the studs make a different impression, looking far more minimalist than we would expect a bag titled “Rocker” to ever be.

The bag itself isn’t as new. The white leather, whilst cool and modern, will be hard to keep clean, which means it is a good job that this pouch shaped design will fit in another bag. That design too has been seen before, but I don’t see why that has to be a negative. Especially as this cross body has definitely improved on its predecessors!

Clean and clever but very pricey at $295, is this the sort of rocker you need?

  • Also available in black

  • Contrasting polka dot interior

Juicy Couture Steals Bird Name from Independent Handbag Designer

Posted on: Jun 26

Los Angeles based handbag designer Elizabeth Carey has been forced to give up the name of her small but successful accessories line Bird, after Juicy Couture swooped in and created its own label under the same name.

Carey’s label was launched in 2006, and Juicy Couture’s not until 2009, but things still got messy legally. She attempted to sue the brand, but soon found that taking on the big boys required some big cash.

I want people to support young designers,” Elizabeth Carey said. “I trademarked my company and did everything I was supposed to do. It’s a good lesson for people who want to start a brand, to know this and know that it’s out there. A big conglomerate shouldn’t be allowed to do this.

She may have dropped the law suit, but Carey isn’t giving up the fight completely. She’ll relaunch her collection in fall under the name Liz Carey Handbags. The line will include the most popular Bird styles along with some brand new designs.

I’m a firm believer in supporting the small designers who tend to create the most interesting accessories. If you are too, make sure you check out Liz Carey Handbags!
