Lanvin’s thoroughly French take on fashion is elegance defined. So when it brings its talents to the bridal market, the effect is absolutely magical. Not that this silk satin pochette should be reserved for brides only; it’s Deco-inspired beauty will make any special occasion gown come to life.

There’s nothing quite as soft and lovely as silk-satin. It has a texture and sheen that just can’t be replicated in a poly blend. The delicate ivory color is rich and lustrous, and it will be an amazing addition to a wedding ensemble or a sweet 20s styled evening gown.

The soft pochette shape is less stuffy and formal than a lot of other evening bags, but is still striking. It is topped by a silk chiffon floral embellished with a giant jewel clasp, which gives it its opulent Deco look.

The long chain strap is slightly in contrast to the delicacy of the bag, but you can imagine it wrapping nicely around your wrist, the bag dangling casually in your palm. It’s hard to resist talking about this bag in terms of fantasy and costume, as its subtle brilliance is dreamlike and fantastic.

All of this understated opulence comes at a pretty price, as you might imagine. At $770, it is reasonably priced for a designer evening bag, but it lacks the durability of other options. You will want to reserve this Lanvin lovely for very, very special occasions.

I’ve never really warmed to the bold accessories from Ed Hardy, but this Morgan Messenger has inspired me to change my tune.

The Morgan is no shrinking violet, but its look seems a lot fresher than so many Ed Hardy bags. Orange is an under-utilized color in the fashion world, and it really gives this messenger a lift. The crinkled synthetic leather maintains Ed Hardy’s edgy aesthetics while adding a healthy dose of style. The strip of metallic tattoo-inspired graphics, bordered with matching golden studs, is another signature Ed Hardy touch. But on the orange and ivory bags it almost blends into the background. If you’d prefer the print was bolder, look to the deep brown bag; the gold print enjoys maximum contrast here.

While the Morgan’s look turns head, its practical design seals the deal. A flat platform base will keep the bag upright once it’s set down. There’s plenty of space inside, and zip and slip pockets to help us stay organized. One more zippered pocket on the back adds even more storage space.

Messengers are typically casual affairs, and while this seems a little more dressed up at its heart it’s really no different. So it’s surprising to see the price tag; for $218 I’d expect to see real leather here, not a cheap synthetic alternative.

Skater girl Beck Hickey has turned her passion for boards into an eco-friendly handbag business. The one-of-a-kind sk8bags from her Beck(y) label are crafted from reclaimed skateboards and plush fabrics.

“The grittiness of used, beat up boards combined with something really posh like silk speaks well to my overall aesthetic,” Hickey explained, “and the beautiful contradiction that results, fuels my creativity.“

The decks are washed and grip tape removed, but otherwise Hickey prefers to keep the boards in their natural state. To keep up with the demand for her unique purses, Hickey accepts donations from skate shops in her native New York.

As thanks for their support, Hickey launched the Boards 4 Bowls program. Through this initiative, Hickey donates $3 for every board she receives to non-profit groups who build and maintain public skate parks across America. She also works with the Tony Hawk Foundation, Jess Anderson Memorial Fund, and Elemental Awareness.

Carlo Fellini channels vintage style with this delicate Jessica clutch.

Rows of tiny beads are stitched together over the satin body in soft waves. These remind me of the thick red curtains of an old-fashioned theater, although when you take in the clutch from a distance it looks much closer to a shell. However you see it, this is a delicate and dainty creature which wouldn’t look out of place in the hands of a vintage Hollywood starlet.

This is called a mini clutch though, so don’t expect a lot of space. The interior is very small, and the kiss lock clasp will pop open if you try to fit more items inside than you should. At least the interior is lined though; this will help to protect those delicate beads from damage.

No matter how small the purse, it’s always nice to have a hands-free carrying option. Carlo Fellini gives us two: a short 7 inch wrist strap and a longer 21 inch shoulder chain. I love the choice, and the fact that neither detachable chain need clutter the already small interior as so many shoulder straps do.

The Jessica is available in a range of seven colors so there’s bound to be one to suit your favorite evening dress. What a shame they’re so expensive; at $99 we simply don’t get a lot of purse for our dollar.

I’ve seen gourds used to make bowls and ornaments, but I’d never have imagined using the melon-like plants for purses! Snook N Company did though, and the results are the label’s It’s a Gourd collection.

Snook N Company take its eco-friendly ethos seriously. Each gourd is organically grown in the United States and picked by hand. Its original beauty is then enhanced with natural oils and colored with eco-friendly dyes. Vegetable tanned leathers form the straps, while herringbone patterned hemp fabrics are used for the linings.

Gourds are surprisingly strong, with exteriors which resemble wood, so they make a durable choice for accessories. However, they’re not the most fashion forward items. Animal prints and floral designs do their best to add modern style, but there’s no getting away from the original materials here.

Whether that’s a flaw or a bonus will depend on your own personal tastes. It’s a Gourd purses seem like a bit of a novelty, but that homespun character is also part of their charm. The purses are available for $125 from the Snook N Company website.

With its casual looks and bold, patterned design, this Peachy Keen tote from Roxy seems tailor-made for the beach.

There are several patterns available to suit all tastes, from the conservative gray on black logo print to this lurid floral-inspired design. This fun, feminine pattern is my favorite, but if your boyfriend often gets stuck carrying your beach bag you may prefer one of the more low-key designs.

The cotton body is paired with sturdy webbing straps. I appreciate their strength, as they should survive salty sea air and a little salt water, but I’m not sure about the look. It interrupts the design, and that’s distracting to me, although I suppose that’s a matter of personal taste.

I can’t fault the features of the Peachy Keen, which is packed with pockets inside and out, but the size leaves something to be desired. It’s too narrow to comfortably carry a thick beach towel along with all your other summer essentials, so be prepared for that inconvenience.

This Peachy Keen tote isn’t the ideal beach bag, but for a mere $29.50 it comes closer than many totes in this price range.
