Once the go-to line for beach bags and summer accessories, these days Roxy is showing us what it can do away from the sea shore. Stylish handbags like this Swiss Miss cross-body have almost become the norm for Roxy, and I for one am thrilled at the new direction. I just can’t figure out what it has to do with lederhosen and the Alps!

From a distance the Swiss Miss’ finish looks like the most luxurious weathered leather. It’s only when we get up close that we find out the cross-body bag is actually made of vinyl. If you’re expecting cowhide this slightly stiff fabric may disappoint you, but when it costs just $34 I’m impressed that we have even the appearance of luxury!

This gorgeous looking material is complemented by modern black contrast stitching. It makes the handbag almost look like a well-worn pair of denim jeans, and has just the same casual and classic appeal.

For this price you’d expect Roxy to cut a few corners, but it hasn’t skimped on functional features. It’s relatively small by modern standards, but that should be some relief for girls tired of oversized purses weighing them down. A bag of this size doesn’t need much to stay organized, but Roxy still offers a large external pocket and a zippered pouch inside. The strap is fully adjustable too so you can easily convert the bag from a shoulder purse to a cross body.

This Roxy bag may not last more than a few seasons, but at this price we won’t mind that too much. While it’s with you, the Swiss Miss offers a great combination of style and substance.

If you thought Harveys had the seatbelt handbag market cornered, think again. Independent Australian label Interrobang is giving the well-known American brand a run for its money.

Rather than weaving the car parts together, Interrobang lays the belts side by side for a cleaner, more sophisticated look. There are also more different styles available than the Harveys purses, including the everyday Tilde tote, the protective Kindle, iPod, and laptop armor bags, and the modern zippered Interpunct purse.

Where Harveys are seatbelt specialists, Interrobang isn’t afraid to try something new. The brand has recently introduced a colorful range of backpacks made from reclaimed flags and banners. The lightweight material is strengthened with thick interfacing for strength and lined with black cotton.

With most bags priced at less than $100, Interrobang accessories are affordable for even the most frugal fashionistas. They’re available online through the brand’s Etsy store and global independent design website Supermarket.

Betsey Johnson lays feminine roses over the top of her zebra print to create a look that’s every bit as bold and brash as we’d expect from this flamboyant designer. It won’t suit everybody, but Betsey Johnson never tries to cater to the masses. This is a collection of purses for girls who don’t take themselves, or their style, too seriously.

But to call it a three-piece set is probably a bit generous, as we don’t really get three bags at all. The large satchel and small zippered pouch clearly count, but the mirrored charm is a bit of a stretch. It’s so small that you’d need a serious make-up emergency to whip it out; personally I’d make the effort to find a bathroom rather than use this thing.

Thankfully, Betsey Johnson doesn’t gouge us for the three parts. This cute Betsey’s Safari set is reasonably priced at $48. It’s a great traveling companion, although I can imagine getting plenty of extra mileage from the zippered pouch. This is the perfect purse for carrying your lippy and other make-up must haves on a big night out.

Hermes might charge an arm and a leg for its iconic handbags and stylish scarves, but that hasn’t scared shoppers off in the last few months. The French fashion house has seen a sales increase of 23% in the first six months of the year.

While most of are still smarting from the affects of the global recession, luxury lovers continue to spend up big on Hermes. The sales figures are believed to be attributed to a surge in the Asian market, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

With its classic items like Birkin bags and silk scarves, Hermes never falls out of vogue. And let’s not forget the company’s high operating margin. It might smart at the cash register, but we all know Hermes’ stylish items cost the consumers much more than the manufacturers. Birkin waiting lists may be a little shorter these days, but while the demand remains the brand can charge whatever it likes!

The sales figures are good news for Hermes, and if trend forecasters are right those numbers will only improve as 2010 comes to a close. I’m predicting a pretty big Christmas party at Hermes headquarters!

Just as I was beginning to tire of studded purses, this Jacqueline clutch from Big Buddha crosses my path to change my mind.

Big Buddha breathes new life into the popular trend by interpreting it in a delicate new way. The fine studs make a refreshing change from the chunky hardware accents we typically see. By mixing up the metal, both in color and in style, Big Buddha also makes this purse feel fresh. Under the hands of a less skillful design house the mismatch of studs may seem a bit confused, but the neutral color palette helps Big Buddha get away with this risk.

A long tassel peeks out from underneath the front flap, giving the Jacqueline just a hint of bohemian style. Some may feel the accent is unwarranted as it competes with all those studs, but I feel it finishes the purse nicely.

I’m less enthusiastic about the metal chain strap. It’s always nice to have a hands-free carrying option, but this one seems a bit too chunky for the purse. The thick metal links seem at odds with those delicate studs. They make the purse feel less feminine, and frankly confuse the look. Personally I’d detach it for a much cleaner look.

It’s not the perfect purse, but the Jacqueline’s price is pretty spot on. It can be yours for $62.50, and even less now it’s on sale!

Chloe has really been killing it lately. Its handbags this season are so on-point that it’s all I can do to keep my credit card in my wallet when faced with their fabulousness. The Marti bags are a particular favorite. I am enamored with their sweetly feminine styling and edgy zipper details. This Marti suede clutch is the perfect addition to an amazing line.

This fuchsia color is completely spectacular. I would almost call it raspberry. It’s got all the punch of hot pink, but it’s toned down enough that carrying it won’t make you feel like a neon-toting trendster. The merlot suede inserts add the perfect amount of contrast.

I am really digging suede, lately, and the way it’s used on the Marti bags is perfect. It doesn’t look all shabby chic or boho, it just looks soft and touchable. Of course, it isn’t as durable as leather, but it’s not as though you’ll be throwing your Chloe bag around all willy-nilly.

The rounded front-flap design is youthful and on-trend, but definitely not trendy. And then there’s the bows … oh these iconic zipper-edged bows! I don’t really dig bows, but they look so sculptural here that I just can’t help but swoon.

And as a major bonus, the Marti clutch is only $295! Seriously, this has to be a record low price for the Chloe line. Get in line, though, because these babies are gonna sell out fast.

Lanvin’s line of Amalia bags has been, in general, fantastic. But this medium python shoulder bag is by far my favorite of the bunch. It has all the elegant femininity that we’ve come to expect from Lanvin, but with an exotic twist.

The gray-brown python skin is simply phenomenal. I’ve never seen a snakeskin bag in quite this color, and it looks fresh and new even though it’s neutral. The simple shape of the Amalia is well-suited to showcasing the brilliance of the skin, and allowing the eye to fully take in all the natural texture.

The details on this bag are extremely well balanced. The dual chain and leather handles are beautiful in their own right, but they don’t take away from the simplicity of the design. The signature interwoven Lanvin grosgrain bow is a sweet feminine detail that gels well with the whole package.

The Amalia is an extremely versatile exotic bag. Because the straps are adjustable and can be joined together, it can be worn over the shoulder, across the body, or held in the crook of your elbow. It should be versatile to account for the $3,340 price tag, and it’s bound to spawn a wave of cheaper imitations for those of us that can’t make quite that kind of financial commitment.

Trust Bodhi to take a handbag style we thought we knew and turn it on its head.

The clean, crisp lines we typically see in a bucket bag are gone, replaced instead with a flared tote-like silhouette. The playful front pockets extend out beyond the rest of the bag to further alter its shape. These pouches, which are sweetly accented with large buttons, remind me of the pockets we might see on a child’s party dress. There’s definitely a dash of whimsy about the look which makes them much more than a practical feature.

The long, dual shoulder straps disappear beneath the tightly gathered leather top. This playful pleated top is another fun, flirty design accent which helps separate this bucket bag from the rest of the pack.
