Lanvin is always surprising me. Right when I think it’s given up its cutting edge, it comes out with a bag like the Happy Pop. This gorgeous number strikes a fabulous balance between edgy and sophisticated.

The quilting on the black leather isn’t your average Upper East side fare. It has a distinctly motorcycle-inspired look to it that gives the Happy Pop an edge right from the get go. Plus, the sheen on the leather has a muted, almost waxed appearance that makes it more casual than conservative. Not that you couldn’t rock this baby for a special occasion! You absolutely could. It’s just more rock-n-roll than your average evening bag.

The shape is pretty unremarkable, but it doesn’t need to be remarkable. On this bag, the difference is in the details. This chain strap is one of the most interesting that I have ever seen. It contains links of two different sizes and colors. The smaller links are burnished silver and have a distinctly chain mail vibe, which contrasts beautifully with the oversized burnished copper links. I would buy this bag for the strap alone, but if you don’t love it, it’s detachable.

At $1,855, the Happy Pop is not a bag purchase to be taken lightly, but it’s so freaking cool that it’s really hard to resist, even for tight-fisted recessionistas like me.

In a sea of structured box and flap clutches, this unusual squishy Kita clutch from Bulga really stands out.

This is the sort of purse that begs to be held. The leather looks so soft, and its pliable design means it’ll feel great in the palm of your hand. The shape is so unusual, with its golden buckled belts on each side, structured border, and buttery soft leather body. It might be quirky, but it’s not so weird that it’d look out of place at any function. It’ll likely attract attention, but in the best possible way.

My biggest concerns with this purse are of a practical nature. Small purses are rarely practical, but I’m willing to overlook that. I’m more worried with the pristine white leather, which probably won’t look so wonderful once its worn in. By not offering an optional shoulder strap, Bulga is forcing us to carry the clutch by hand. It’s only a matter of time before grubby fingerprints and sweat stain that lush leather, and when they do the appeal will be lost. Perhaps it’s time to start wearing evening gloves!

Knowing how quickly it’ll show age, I can’t imagine spending $305 on this cute clutch. It’s a shame, because it’d be a lovely addition to my handbag collection.

Despite all of its flamboyant elements, Bourne manages to create quite a refined evening purse in the Cassandra.

This is a purse covered in sequins. Its front flap is trimmed with a wide band of mottled snakeskin printed leather, then dotted with rosettes made from the same serpentine hide. Take every element on its own merits and you might think it too much. Combine them, and it’s almost certainly a recipe for disaster. Yet by keeping the colors muted, Bourne actually makes the Cassandra look glamorous rather than glitzy.

A magnetic clasp is hidden underneath the front flap to keep your party essentials safe. These are the only things you’ll be able to fit inside this bag, but its small size does make it look very stylish. And goodness knows, at most evening affairs looks are much more important than practical concerns!

Not that functionality is forgotten altogether. I’m glad Bourne has equipped the Cassandra with a chain strap for easy carrying as the night wears on.

At $205 this is Bourne’s most expensive purse, but it might just be worth the splurge.

Milly is expanding its fashion range with the introduction of handbags and a revised jewelry line in the New Year.

“I set out . . . with the same philosophy and aesthetic as my ready-to-wear collection: smart, sexy and glamorous . . . a modern sensibility with a vintage vibe,” explained Milly designer Michelle Smith.

The handbags, which will have a fun, nautical feel, are made from leather and canvas. They’re available in a range of styles including totes, hobos, satchels, and cross-body bags for daytime use, and clutches for carrying once the summer sun sets. The prices are quite reasonable too, ranging from $250 to $525 for the largest handbags.

The new jewelry also takes its cues from the sea. There are navy rope bracelets, seashell inspired necklaces, and twisted earrings in red and navy blue hues. These trinkets aren’t too expensive either. Expect to pay between $85 and $275 for these nautical baubles.

Look out for these Milly accessories in stores next January.

The Knot clutch is one of Bottega Veneta’s most beloved purse designs, but we’ve never seen these distinctive accessories looking quite like this.

This time we see the clutch made not from the brand’s iconic woven intrecciato leather, but from oxidized silver. This metal body is softened with rows and rows of tiny scarab beetles. The yellow and green insects walk this way and that, adding a whimsical note to the elegant silver surface. Bottega Veneta’s classic metal knot forms the purse’s clasp to complete the dazzling, and somewhat daring, look.

As with any high fashion item, this isn’t a purse for everybody. The beetles seem a little silly to me, but I’m sure fans of Judith Leiber’s animal shaped minaudieres would appreciate their novelty.

But then there’s that bottom line, a whopping $8000. That’s a whole chunk of change, particularly for a bag that’s so small and strap free. And that’s to say nothing of those polarizing beetles. Personally I’d rather save cash and snap up one of Bottega Veneta’s more conventional knot clutches rather than spending a small fortune on this purse.

I thought studs were losing their appeal, but with the release of her Prince Satchel designer Monica Botkier is telling me otherwise. And goodness knows the New York native should know!

While many fashion brands have tried to reinvent studs in efforts to make them look more current, Botkier takes a more traditional route here. The flat, round studs feature a brushed silver surface which is much more muted than many of the studs we’ve seen in the recent past. Rather than popping against the black lambskin body, this hardware is relaxed and reserved. It’s a little rock and roll, but it’s more likely to be behind the drum kit than fronting the band.

The casually cool front of the Prince is matched by more space than most of us will ever need. It’s a matter of personal taste whether this is a bonus or a drawback. If you love to carry your essentials along with the kitchen sink you’ll embrace the luxuriously large interior, but if you’d prefer to travel lighter you may like to look elsewhere.

If you do love to live large though, you won’t be disappointed with the Prince. All that space is made more manageable with interior and exterior pockets and a handy keychain. I also love the longer shoulder strap, which makes carrying the satchel much easier once it’s full.

At $575 this isn’t a cheap bag, but I think Botkier delivers us more than enough to justify that price.
