A diffusion line can often be a little more cutting edge than a designer’s primary collection, because the price points are lower, and people are more willing to experiment with new styles when they are affordable. Halston Heritage, thus far, has not seemed particularly cutting edge to me, but bags like this crinkled leather Catherine are changing my mind.

The crinkled black leather on this bag looks simultaneously organic and man-made. The softness and suppleness of the leather is definitely natural, but the crinkled treatment makes it look like a grocery bag that has been balled up for a long time. In a good way.

The shape of the bag is also reminiscent of a plastic grocery bag, but more streamlined. It’s a great combination of hobo and tote that will be particularly useful for women who like to carry a whole lot of stuff around with them and don’t mind if it doesn’t stay super organized. In other words, the Catherine is roomy, but lacks organizational features.

It also lacks embellishment, which is a major plus. The appeal of this bag is its simple, off-kilter design. And at $395, it’s remarkably affordable for the designer market.

You can tell what season we are going into. Suddenly every single handbag featured on this site seems to be in a shade of black, gray, russet or brown. They are lovely, no doubt, but the summer lover in me is craving a bit of brightness.

So, without further ado, let me introduce this gorgeous Santi watercolor clutch. It is a remake of an older framed purse, just with a much nicer and more elegant shape and good timing for my wintry melancholy!

The colors, of course, are beautiful. The floral inspired pattern melds bright yet soft blues, pinks and yellows. It’s not particularly suitable for wet winter weather, being made of a soft fabric, but definitely perfect for brightening up a very dull day. Even better, this could be worn at night to really liven up an outfit and a room!

OK, so this isn’t practical with the rainy season heading our way. But it is so cute, feminine and flirty that I simply had to share it!

Bohemian style is the order of the day with this Namid Hobo from Donald J Pliner.

I can just imagine seeing Janis Joplin or Joan Baez with this bag strapped across their body as they soaked up the atmosphere at Woodstock. Its fringed leather trim might not be the most modern accent, but it is ideal for channeling that vintage 70s style. This tan shade, known as beige, is also in keeping with that hippie spirit, although the Namid is also available in black if you’d prefer.

It’s only when you look closer though that you realize this hobo is a little more edgy than most boho bags. The fringing is embellished with tiny studs, and there are larger spiky versions of this hardware near the corners of the base. It’s easy to miss these details, but they’re what help to set this hobo apart.

The Namid is more structured than the average hobo, but that only makes it easier to access your essentials. There’s a decent amount of space for them inside, although you may struggle to find room for the luxuries you like to take out.

It may not suit packrats, but most modern girls will be happy to add this hippie throwback to their wardrobe.

It takes something special to make a traditionally shaped shopper turn my head, but DKNY has succeeded with this unique pleated shopper handbag.

Many shoppers feature pleated details, but I’ve never seen one with pleats quite like this. They gather the leather together, with proudly exposed, raw edges for a gutsy rock and roll attitude. Of course that edge could only be achieved with the use of racy red leather, but DKNY does offer black and ivory alternatives if you’d prefer to temper the texture.

The Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde is teaming up with songwriter JP Jones for a host of creative endeavors. Along with a new band called JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys and an album on the way, the duo has an animal-friendly clothing line in the works.

The edgy fashion collection will be called Fairground Luck in memory of Jones’ childhood living as the son of a carnival arcade owner. With Hynde a committed vegetarian and PETA activist, the label looks to create rock and roll inspired style without the leather. The fashion range will include handbags and cowboy boots, T-shirts, jackets, and sexy skinny jeans.

There’s no word yet on price points, or when we can expect the Fairground Luck fashions in stores, but I’m already excited. We know that these musicians are creative types, so I’m interested to see how that artistic sensibility translates to the fashion world. How about you?

Diesel combines superior quality with practical design in this Into the Fold Upright Backpack.

Initially it seems like the kind of bag you’d sling on your back for a long hike or camping vacation, but the material causes me to reconsider. The lush leather, with its gorgeous weathered texture, deserves to be kept in a cleaner environment than the great outdoors. That fabric seems made for the High Street, although the styling is too casual for that setting.

While I’m not quite sure where I’d carry it, I do like the Into the Fold backpack. Its upright orientation is a refreshing alternative to those big, bulky, school bags, and its practical design will win over busy girls. There’s plenty of space inside, and zip and slip pockets to keep your smaller items in order. I also like the adjustable shoulder straps, which allow you to find just the right fit for comfort.

This backpack’s quality helps to justify its $430 price tag, but while I’m unsure where to wear it I think I’ll have to pass.

Earlier today I reviewed a Judith Leiber fish clutch that I found totally ridiculous, and I actually found myself starting to feel a little resentful about how highly-priced her coveted bags are, even when they are kind of absurd. And then I see lovely little evening bags like this one and realize that Leiber is more than a one trick pony.

This gorgeous Airstream clutch has all the sparkle and glamour of old Hollywood wrapped up into a lovely little package. The silver crystals shimmer and shine like nothing else, and it would be a spectacular addition to a floor length black gown, or the perfect accessory for a really glam rock ensemble.

The shape is totally pared down and streamlined, as the name implies, to allow for maximum sparkle. Seriously, the wow factor of the Airstream is difficult to describe. I just want to say, “Wow.” And I wish I had $1,495.
