It might not look at it at first glance, but Kavu insists that this cross-body bag is a Keeper.

Like so many of Kavu’s accessories, its appearance is casual and without frills. This striped body, made of a blend of cotton and hemp, reminds me of the Nepalese blankets you’d spot at the local craft markets. It’s not very sophisticated or on trend, but it could look cute paired with your favorite jeans and a well worn tee.

The laid back looks aren’t the biggest draw card here though; it’s all about the functional design. With five separate organizer pockets, the toughest part is remembering just where you put your keys. Its extra long strap is completely adjustable, so you can wear it over your shoulder or across your body depending on your mood.

It’s not the poshest purse around, but at $30 this Kavu cross-body bag really does represent value for money.

Okay, suddenly Temperley London bags are everywhere I look, and I seriously don’t get it. Maybe it’s a matter of personal taste, but this season’s giant studs are totally underwhelming me. This Trinity messenger is the perfect example of a good bag gone wrong.

The combination of light brown and black leather on this bag is very well done. The color-blocked effect gives the Trinity a mod look that would be really appealing if it weren’t overlaid with all those giant gold and leather studs.

The shape is also really excellent. It’s a little taller than your average messenger, and a little narrower, which makes it more manageable and ergonomic. Plus, it has this great front pocket that is very convenient for little things that you need to get to quickly.

I might be able to get over all the studding on the bag if it weren’t also on the strap, but that addition, for me, takes it from simply over-the-top to downright unbearable. Who is Temperley kidding with this $950 price tag? The materials may be nice, but I’m not paying that much for shoddy, undisciplined design.

Alice Temperley, the brains behind Temperley London, is a hot young designer that has been making waves in the fashion world since her first runway show in 2003. She is credited with revitalizing British fashion for the 21st century, but frankly, if this Talitha bag is any indication of her design sensibility, I just don’t see what the fuss is about.

Snake print embossing is a project that needs to be taken on very carefully. In order to be successful, it really has to look as least as good as the real thing. This python print definitely doesn’t look like the real thing. Frankly, the texture is so bad that it doesn’t even look like real leather.

The shape of the Talitha is cute and simple, but that’s where the bag’s simplicity ends. All the details are completely overwrought. I would think that the medallions that line the center of the bag were too much even if they weren’t also set onto patent leather buttons and flanked by two shiny zippered pockets, but the combination is just overwhelming.

To top things off, there’s a chain and leather strap. The strap itself is quite nice, actually, but on this already overdecorated Talitha, it’s just another case of way too much. Speaking of way too much, let’s talk about the price of the bag. It’s $1,450. Seriously, I need to see a much higher level of taste at play in order to justify that kind of price tag.

To be truthful, I’ve never been much of a Michael Kors fan. His work has a sort of conservative, sort of trendy look that is just too wishy-washy for me. This Darrington hobo is a little cooler than what I expect from him, but still a little blah.

The distressed finish on the brown leather is my favorite part of the bag. The leather certainly hasn’t been lightly worked over; it looks like it’s been through a carwash several times and then run over by an eighteen-wheeler. This ensures that the leather is soft and slouchy, and totally downtown chic.

The beautifully cresent hobo shape is casually perfect, and will work for day or night with a lot of fall’s edgier looks. What I don’t like about the Darrington is the details. The smooth brown leather strap isn’t distressed like the rest of the bag, and it looks totally out of place. That, and the gold hardware is a little too bright for such a worked over bag. The antiqued gold zipper and tabs on the body of the bag are fine, but the gold on the strap is a yellow-y brushed gold that just doesn’t work.

I don’t know about you, but I expect a lot more for $695 than this. As usual, I find this Michael Kors bag to be underthought and overpriced.

Here we have another luxurious handbag from designer Serpui Marie, and it is a cracker!

I am mentally building potential outfits for this clutch as we speak. After all, just image how sexy this quilted camel colored snakeskin would look when teamed with those Chloé long camel trousers, or with some beige lace and a beautiful black tux jacket. This is, in essence, the perfect party bag for this season’s fashions, and is bound to be popular.

The main thing holding me back from rushing out and buying this quilted box clutch, however, is the price. As perhaps would be expected for luxury products and luxury design, you have to pay a mighty $375 for this diamond minaudiere. This may be a very on-trend bag, but the season-specific coloring and impractical design means that I would hesitate before shelling out such a large amount of money.

Price reservations aside, this snakeskin purse is, without a doubt, a stunner. If you covet the runway collections, then I am sure that this clutch will be high up your wish list.

Combine metallic shine and studs with a dose of practicality in this spacious Rampage clutch.

It isn’t often that you get something so decorative, but which still offers you plenty of internal space. After all, clutches are famed for being small and pretty, whereas the Rosalie clutch leans more towards a large satchel. This could hold you back, and it is therefore a relief that they include a handle. After all, I would imagine this clutch bag would be pretty hard to “clutch”!

Design wise, people are either going to love or hate this synthetic leather purse. The color is nice, in a sweet cherry red, and the studs are always going to be popular. But the big plastic design orients this slightly more towards a youth market. I can’t really imagine a hard working executive wearing a metallic bag like this to work!

At a bargain $27.20, this shoulder flap clutch is a real cheapy! If you think you like it, this price makes it worth the risk!

This Jet Setter shopper from Kathy Van Zeeland looks made for girls on the go, but is it really the travel bag it appears to be?

Despite its name, I don’t think so. The biggest problem here is its size. While it’s not a small purse by any means, its dimensions are more suited to everyday use than weekends away. It also doesn’t have as many features as I’d hope for. To be fair Kathy Van Zeeland does deliver more than she generally does, with a zippered center compartment and pockets on the side walls But I’d love some features designed with travel in mind, like passport wallets, key fobs, and other handy bibs and bobs.

Perhaps this shopper should be viewed as an option for wannabe jet setters, rather than those clocking up frequent flier miles. They’re likely to make use of the tote’s features without feeling shortchanged.

Even if you have your feet planted firmly on the ground, it still may not be your bag. If you’ve never been a fan of Kathy Van Zeeland’s brash designs, the Jet Setter isn’t likely to change your mind. The playful letter patches are whimsical against the glitzy silver synthetic body. They really could have stood alone, but Kathy Van Zeeland adds rows of studs for good measure.

At $99 this is a well priced shopper, so long as you don’t expect it to fulfill all your travel needs.

Victoria Beckham unveiled her first collection of handbags as part of New York Fashion Week. The former Spice Girl launched her spring/summer 2011 line at a Manhattan townhouse yesterday.

The centerpiece of the range of the signature Victoria bag, a structured dual handled tote which bears more than a passing resemblance to a Hermes Birkin. Unlike the coveted It bag though, the Victoria is set to retail for just £1200. It will be available in two sizes, and buffalo and crocodile colors.

The good looking, if not altogether inspired, handbag is the result of Beckham’s work with Marc Jacob’s designer Katie Hillier. Victoria told the media that she was thankful for Hillier’s creative knowhow during the development process.

“I knew what I wanted, but I needed someone with the expertise, who knew about factories,” Victoria said.

The  collection also features a travel tote designed with Victoria’s jet-setting football star husband David Beckham in mind.

“I had to put a bag in the collection that David would use,” she added.

I’m not seeing a lot to really inspire me from Victoria Beckham’s collection, but I do admire her commitment to affordable luxury. Are you looking forward to seeing the entire line?

Judith Leiber doesn’t have the market cornered on whimsical novelty handbags. Kathrine Baumann shows she’s every bit as creative with this Chinese Takeout Purse.

This adorable bag looks just like a Chinese takeout box, although it’s got infinitely more style! The box is dressed up with thousands of shimmering Swarovski crystals, which are artfully arranged to create a Chinese scene. The pagoda and trees are shown in silhouette against a fiery Oriental sunset.

So many novelty bags are difficult to carry, so I appreciate the golden strap we see here. It’s such a clever part of the design; it’s rare to see a practical addition look this good!

It’s probably the only practical part of this purse though. It’s very small, so be prepared to leave some of those items you consider essential at home. One thing you won’t want to leave behind though is the complementary heart shaped compact, which will come in very handy when you’re out on the town.

That mirror adds value, but not the sort that can really justify the $3175 price tag. Of course this bag is meticulously crafted, but does that really warrant spending that kind of dosh?
